i can play 4-5 times with a cat for few minutes a day, but i don't have much time to dedicate two hours to a cat...will a birman cat suffers for this....? i'd like to have one
@saucebiotch just look for a breeder in the same area (google search it) i'm sure you'll find plenty, if not some breeders offer shipping services, pure bred cats are quite expensive but it's so worth it!
Watching this is realise how fat my birman is! Her stomach almost reaches the floor(but its a little hard to tell because she is so fluffy) shes fat not because of her diet( she eats about a quarter of a small tin of wet food a day, and my moggie kitten finishes it off) but because she spends 95% of her time sleeping and louging around!

it's better to de-claw then to have to get rid of your pet because they ruin your furniture. my cats are so awesome. they run, play, cuddle - they think they still have claws, they still sharpen their non existent claws on my couch. my birmans don't go outside - they are so beautiful i would think someone would steal them!
@burninglegal With proper training and a proper scratching post, the furniture and everything else is safe. I have two indoor cats, i dont even need to trim their claws, they take care if it themselves on the scratching post. And not a single piece of furniture has been scratched on in my appartment. Declawing is unnessesary and even banned in sertain cat assosiations.

declawing is not cruel. my dad is a vet and we declawed my cats in my kitchen. it is a simple procedure. with the medical glue (no stitches anymore) it's pretty easy. they hobbled around with bandages for 3 days tops. it's like getting your wisdom teeth out for humans. a little discomfort for a couple days - that's it.
@burninglegal No, its more like having your fingernails pulled out. Cats use their claws as tools in the same way we sometimes use our nails. Cats cant grip things like we do since they dont have thumb, so they sometimes hook their claws in to lift something, like a toy, or any other object they want to interact with.

I have a birman and she was EXTREMELY active and mouthy as a kitten. Bites A LOT and needed good training in that. My birman is also fearless and very territorial -she used to win the family's dog in a fight (when she was less than 12 weeks old and still in her mother cat's house. BTW that dog was huge) and is still constantly in fight with my other cat. She doesn't do well with other animals at all.
She likes to be the center of attention but in the same time her interest in humans has always been pretty low. She likes company when it's okay for HER. She's not doglike at all. Very catlike. A little princess. She eats next to nothing and is very picky with her food. My birman is excellent, I love her so much. Always doing something new. But can be a hand full and I wanted to tell it so that you would be prepared!
Birmans are extremely curious and interested in everything and that can cause problems when you're trying to sleep: They're dropping everything from the table or pulling something out of your drawer and biting electricity wires. I can't say birmans all like this but I've talked to birman owners in my country and they say that this behaviour is very common in birman kittens. They really are active and P L A Y F U L!!!
But it's supposed to disappear when they're older and then they are just the docile doglike purrrrfect cat discribed in this video. Of course they are always perfect in a catlike stubborn manner. Gotta love cats ;) You'll never be bored with a birman kitten.
I have a male Birman and he is not diva like at all. He is so sweet and just loves everybody who comes through the door. My Birman loves avocados too! lol.
We have a kitten who looks exactly like a pure-bred Burman, but we found her wandering around in the front of her house, and she was dry, and it was raining, so we assumed that someone dropped her off there. We have also seen a very large, handsome Burman-looking tom cat prowling the neighborhood. anyway, our little Tofu is just how you describe disposition-wise and she is a delightful member of our family
Update: On April 23, 2009 I had to have one of my Birman boys euthanized. He had been battling what the vet thinks was a dry form of FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis), a lethal disease caused by the mutation of a corona virus. Now my other boy is alone and cries all the time. I could not get another cat for fear that the corona virus (which is contagious) might spread to the new member. So I bought a female English Springer Spaniel puppy with the hope my Birman boy will befriend her.
I am working on it. The puppy - "Gemma" - just loves Malachi (the birman boy), but as usual, Malachi does not like it when she invades his personal space by trying to lick his ears, or jump on his back. Gemma just wants to play with him, but he is still a little stand-offish in typical feline fashion and has hissed at her a few times, but nothing more. I think they will become friends over time, though.
Declawing is pretty cruel to your cat, I think you should just gently file the claws if they get too sharp or long, but don't clip their claws, you could hit sensitive nerves. But cats are really worth it, despite them scratching furniture. :) I'm not really sure though, my cat went outside too much so we never worried about him scratching furniture. My dad wanted him not to go indoors because cat urine makes bad stains. I wanted him to go indoors though, because cats are meant to be indoors.
m really sorry, but these things freak me out sooo much!

Yes, birmans are everything you say. Mine wandered onto my patio almost 20 years ago. We never did find her owner. She had been declawed and beautifully cared for, though. Sadly, our beloved "Tweek" passed away yesterday. The house seems so empty this morning.
Declawing is mutilating your cats paws. If someone doesnt want his furniture destroyed or something, he should either not get a cat or just accept that some stuff will get clawed on. The poor animal.
You like exageration don't you? Mutilating? lol. The cat doesn't care if it is declawed. My cat was declawed and was the happiest little furball on the planet.
neonayla is right. There are sensitive nerves in dogs and cats paws. Youre lucky your cat didn't end up badly injured. Declawing is very dangerous. They use their claws as a balance center for their feet and self protection. I hope you never let your declawed cat outside.
I'm guessing, 'cus your declawing was a success, that it had been done by a professional vet that had lots of experience with cats? That's the only way to go about this but I would never do it. Nor would I recommend it.
that is absolutly correct. My mother worked in a veterinary clinic, and witnessed this being done, she said it was just terrible, the pull the claw so you can see the whole this to the skin, and from the very root, including skin, cut all around it and the cats awaken in such pain. I would never do it!

I own two Birman boys and they are everything that was stated about them in this video. They are people oriented, love to play, are affectionate and love attention. One of my boys has quite an extensive feline vocabulary that includes, chirps, trills, and other unusual sounds that are quite amusing. Physically, they are stunning cats with gorgeous blue eyes and white mittens. If you want a cat with dog-like qualities, without the kind of care a dog requires, the Birman is for you.
Yes. As long as the two cats are socialized and get along, there is no problem leaving both of them alone together. My sister also has two Birmans, one boy and one girl and she works all day and they are alone for hours. It is also a good idea to "cat proof" the house regardless of breed, for the cats' safety and your peace of mind. Our Birman girl loves to chew up toilet tissue and paper, eat bread and even tomatoes, so we have to hide all these items away so she cannot get at them.
Being a novice about cat-breeds, why does a Birman look so much like a Ragdoll? Is the Ragdoll a Birman derivative? Plus, what's the distinguishing characteristic between a Birman and Ragdoll?
Birmans have 4 white feet. The back ones are called laces & extend to an inverted V ending at the hock. Birmans also have way less coat. Ragdolls are a fairly new breed, while Birmans have been around for years.
My cat practically stalks my mum.. lol. and she gets annoyed sometimes if i am sitting near my mum.. she sulks and bites me. when my mum is away from the house, then she loves me the most. and yeh, she does talk to you. i meow, and she meows back. we keep her inside. she also loves her toys :)
yea right , you can't say keep all cats in! my cats are perfectly safe, hes siamese and stays close to home. all life is with an element of risk, all cats benefit from outdoor air.

I had a tabby point Birman called Jill, she was my bestest buddy but we had to sell her.... :(
I would probably disagree with Birmans being indoor cats though - given an interesting enough outdoor space they love exploring gardens.
