The first season was extremely dark - the sort of comedy you now have to go to cable to watch. Among the memorable bits - Kill Whitey, pot brownies, Chi McBride singing Danny Boy, and John encouraging a mugger to shoot his black co-worker instead of him, since the cops won't try too hard to find the shooter. Then NBC tried to "fix" it and it went to hell
I don't remember these visuals in the title sequence. In its network run, the visuals were Barney Miller style, cutting between generic inner-city shots and footage of the characters when their name came onscreen (culled from episodes already in the can).
Then again, I did not catch it in syndication. Is that where this came from?
@PScooter63 This is the original opening, which was changed by the end of the first season. As noted in the description box and by others, the show was initially far too interesting for "must see tv," so they bled all the life out of it and turned it into Cheers in a bus station.
Rumor is the network really didnt like the dark, angry, alcohol themed first season so they changed it.
Since the seasons are so different from each other and the network wasnt happy with its appearance or ratings, they are eager to forget it ever existed and certainly dont want the DVD's spread around to show how they killed what could have been a successful program.
Thank you so much for posting. New interest in this tune here in Chicago - it's become the opening theme of the Steve Cochran show on AM 560 WIND.

You guys are so right - the first season of this show is definitely something special as TV fans know. Comedy-noir is definitely the right word

Great show during it's first season. Then they cheered it up and made it fluffy. Kind of like Enterprise - they changed that show and killed it.

Great show. Had the titles up a while ago myself. Heap of hits. They should release this show on DVD...
