Oh, and I was going to say... it looks like they've already implemented the ability to FB like, tweet and stuff all with one action. At least, sort of. Kinda.
What if you had some manual control over the filter that fills in your suggestion box, like blocking certain keywords, promoting certain keywords, limiting the videos listed by length or by availability in HD or SD...
what if the video titles actually had room to read them before getting cut off
what if you could scroll the suggestions without scrolling off the video
what if you could always on top the video so you can do other stuff while watching it
what if the "add to" button did something useful, like favorite or watch later... seriously.. who thought i would want to queue a video i'm currently watching?
what if youtube would actually pay attention to this? 4500 views
On the homepage of youtube there should be a completely random video BANG in the middle of the page. From here you could use a 3D cloud-like system to pick your next video (eg. more random, less random, more hippie, less hippie)
Oh, I thought of another one. Being able to tag other users in your videos like how you can on Facebook posts and pictures so that if said other user wants to comment it would appear as a comment from the author.
I would change the limit number of videos that are available on our subscription box, which right now is 100 .
For example, the majority of youtubers uploads videos during the weekend and imagin I can't go to the internet because I have to study . When I come to my youtube subscription box, there are lots of videos that I won't see and don't even know they were there because they passed the limit . I have to go to each youtuber's page to see if there's something new .
I find Home better myself. How old are you geek girl?
(Graphics designers aren't geeks. Geeks are people can solder, write machine code in hex and tune dual coil Ducati's with a worn out screwdriver. Kids today, you all don't have a clue ;-P)
When you are informed that you have a reply to a comment you made on a video, it would be great if your comment was quoted. It would be even better if, when your comment was a reply to a comment, it was quoted, too, and so on to the original comment, basically making it a threaded conversation.
Another awesome feature would be if they had a way to put in a comment on stuff you playlist so you can say why you playlisted something or how that video is relevant to the playlist... A comment like "I love this song" or "check out the way the titling is done in this video" ... This doesn't really come up when you play list your own videos, but I just playlisted someone else's cause the font they did the titling for the video in was soooooooo beautiful.
I'm pretty much in love with making people do a word problem or something in order to leave a comment. I don't have anything far out or wacky but fixing subscriptions so videos you've watched don't keep coming back up would be awesome. Gotta say I love MrAeroHD's idea about those who type "FIRST" though...
Another thing is if they had a feature to move videos between 2 channels.... Anyone who's ever split a channel into 2 (e.g. to separate subject matter) knows the hassles that can create...
Another neat idea for YouTube might be the ability to set up a custom spam filter... Like you could put in words like "earnsubscribers" and any message containing those words is automatically spamblocked :-D ... That and, oh yeah, they could make the plethora of options and configurations easier to understand, or atleast put them all in one place :-) ... Or perhaps someone could make a "For Dummies" video on the subject...
what if comments were organized in a tree structure that allowed you to selectively view a whole conversation or not, and what about being able to search through comments, to find the comment that you made a year ago so that you can see who replied to you... and to them, and the people that commented on their comment... or better yet what if as you type a comment youtube would search to see if anyone else made a similar type of comment, and then ask you if you just want to 'like' their comment?
What if YouTube let you subscribe to a playlist or let you categorize your videos and people subscribe to a category? I met a guy with same problem tonight... He posts to his channel sometimes about 80's roleplaying games and some subscribers get this, but others are like _HUH_?
I'd also love to be able to delete videos from my subscriptions that I don't want to watch [not the subscription to the channel, just that one video] because it's cluttering up my subscription page!
There were so many brilliant ideas in there that I lost track! I'd most like to be able to sign into multiple accounts at the same time, not so much for youtube itself but to be signed into my gmail account and youtube account [different accounts] separately, because it's so annoying not to be able to! Although I have found a way to do it, but mostly I don't remember and just end up endlessly signing in and out!
:-D Some of these are really good ideas, I'd put you into my "absolutely must see subscription box", but I think it would be cool if we could also browse videos on a google earth like map, so we could pick them from certain locations
i actually think a lot of these ideas are really good, and i've heard some of them suggested before, like the delayed un-privating option. the rollover-play idea is quite easy to implement and a lot of other sites already do it, at least to scroll through multiple thumbnails.
but honestly, this video should be re-titled: 'youtube brain crack'. ;-D
What if youtube kills a kitten for each troll post? I realize that that will get cat lovers angry at me, and wil be considered a troll post. Ironic, isnt it?
Lots of ideas....some could work, some might not fly. Personally, I just wish the site would deal with the troublemakers who are exploiting multiple personal accts. Also, the site should get their act together on: posting out of an appropriate category. There's a lot of paranormal stuff that needs a specific spot. The music scene out here is remarkable, but the YT algorithms seem to hunt infringement in a strange fashion. Certain artists cherry pick their own work for display and trounce offenders.
Oh and you can search for a time, but not an exact time: /results?uploaded=d&search_filter=1&search_query=barnstaple&search_duration=short&search_type=videos&suggested_categories=10&uni=3
BINGO!!! ...on the different subscriptions lists (think Twitter lists).
I want my BACON channels in one list, my MUSIC channels in another, and my COMEDY in yes another. REALLY, REALLY think YouTube is messing up in this regard.
I like the mutiple sub boxes. I think back when I first joined youtube you could sub to just "tags" not sure if my memory is just playing with me though.
I really like the idea of the multiple sub boxes, like.. really really, plus the multiple accounts sharing a channel page, cause that'd help alot with the collab channels!
i like the accent idea. Gmail has this google alert system where the person gives it some keywords and whenever news shows up about it, it sends the link to your email. Well, youtube should do that, too. If you get what I mean.
What if... we could set the resolution of video window freely, to get vid even if our bandwidth is damn too slow. Change the quality to any rate. What if Utube could change the quality interactively, judging on my webconnection speed, so i never stop listening to Alanis Morisette anymore. Good start Karen!
I really like the idea of being able to sign in to multiple accounts at once. Helpful for alternate channels, kind of like Tweetie for alternate Twitters.
Love some of the ideas you have. I'm surprised they haven't done the annotation thing yet, it so stupid having to navigate away from the page you're on.
What if when you search for a video, they make a few video suggestions of things by people in your own area (like on the right side of the results page) with the standard search results in it's usual page placement.
@F2PHero All those idea's sounded pretty killer outside from a' few of em makin' my poor little laptop crash outright before I even get ta' view anything haha!
I really want to have multiple subscription boxes. You could also use it for general types of videos. So one for musicians, one for vlogs, one for sketches and you could watch which ever one picked your fancy at that particular time.
What if you could find people based on location, not in a creepy way, but so you could find people who live close to you, so within a hundred mile radius or so, so you could not actually stalk anyone. I would like to find more local people making you tube videos.
What if speach recognition was used to generate keywords for your video when you search.. and your search term was translated to search videos in different langauges!
What if youtube filtered posts that only contained the word "First"
Some of these are actually really good. Like the real-time view counter, iTunes interruption, viewing in thumbnail etc..... You should forward this to the big scary people at youtube and see what happens :O
What if YouTube had a grammar, spelling and intelligence moderator, and you could read comments based on how smart they are, and whether or not they're complementing you.
What if YouTube had decided that the turn-all-the-videos-upside-down April Fool's gag should be the norm, and left everything that way by default? :-D
This was awesome. So many interesting and good ideas. I love thinking about things like this. What if we could automatically watch all our subscriptions in order? Like automatically queue them or something, so we could watch videos while doing something else without having to keep clicking on a new video. It'll be really useful in catching up on a lot of videos. :)
@PinkPieLover18 They tried that a while ago, but everyone complained because it prevented people from leaving comments, and it was just really annoying to use.
@xperpetualmotion I remembered that, and I thought it was kinda annoying too, but sometimes I like watching videos that way. Maybe if they tweaked it a little and made it an option? :P
@PinkPieLover18 You can fairly easily make a watch queue from your subscriptions and make them play automatically. I do it a lot. I like that way of viewing.
I would LOVE a list of all the videos I've watched, it would be so awesome. Your idea of subscribing, following and becoming a fan in one click reminds me of Ryan's on The Office "WUPHF" :)
During Vidcon I saw a panel with some YouTube Execs and it is possible to buy the video ad and the banner add for a entire video/channel page, but you'd have to pay out of pocket for the ad space. Still, probably a fairly inexpensive way to advertise your own products.
@DigitalCable It seems weird that you would have to pay to advertise your own product on your own video. I wish there was an option to use the space for your own graphics, and you just wouldn't get paid for it.
@xperpetualmotion@justtubed There are some 3D videos on YouTube that require glasses, but there are others that work based on you kind of crossing your eyes and looking beyond the screen. Think of those weird 3d pictures you have to squint to see...It's similar to that. Search for 3d
@xperpetualmotion I think I remember now that you say something that youtube gave users options of 3d or something like that.... SO how about 4D videos?
This video needs to be featured, and most of the things you mentioned need to happen! Especially multiple subscription boxes, and having multiple accounts share a channel page.
What if youtube threw all uploaded videos through a random editing software before displaying them, so everyone's videos were jumbled and out of order.
This video needs to be featured or something. Some of these ideas are really awesome! (I liked the one about solving a math problem/word problem before commenting. That would be great for this channel, vlogbrothers, etc. That way, trolls could be kept to a minimum, and nerds would prevail! Probably.)
You basically said everything I'd probably ever want in terms of changes to youtube, other than the videos that would disappear after a certain time. XD That would be handy for when people make announcement videos like "OMG I'M ON BLOGTV NAO." or for a meetup information video etc. etc.
I'm sure this doesn't qualify as very interesting but one of my favorite things over at deviantART is that I can always rely on a hilarious prank every April Fools. One year everyone's user icon was replaced by a little .gif that said "so i hurd u liek Mudkips." I think this would be a really hilarious aspect to add to YouTube because then instead of just reading journal reactions to the pranks, we would post video reactions!
@uberwren they do pull pranks on April Fool's Day, but they are often just more annoying than funny. This past year they changed the code so that all the videos were upside-down, the year before that all of the homepage videos were Rick-Rolls
actually youtube USED TO allow you to preview the video in the thumbnail. it would give you 3 random frames from the video in sequence when you moused over. but they removed that, probably because the people who trick you into watching their stupid video with a thumbnail of boobs, complained. :( some really interesting ideas though
@xperpetualmotion yeah it was! these days most of the videos on the "most viewed" page are all prefabricated thumbnails that are designed to grab your eye. but they give you no clue about what the video content is really like. and thanks for replying to me! :)
And yes, i soooooo agree with @qwertyoctopus that threaded convos would be massively helpful. And the spam option is waaaaay overabused on this site. Youtube should really have the report vs spam options.
I'm still confused about the pre-roll ads, is it like Adsense, where the channel creator has the option of choosing the ad? Like I know the Shaytards are making mad money from advertisers and it ticks me off a bit. SKIP should be an option, if I choose not to pay someone to watch....
I <3 the idea of commenting from multiple accounts, the statistics and history idea (though that would become the new "first!"), the idea of being able to search by low views, viewcount in real time (!!!!), and for fuck's sake, if I can choose the ads on my blogger, I should be able to personalize my channel as I want, but it can't go the gay ass myspace route, y'know?
I'm so amazed you have the time to make these videos, though, if I spent more time working and less time watching.....
I think a practical change is that comments that are replies to other comments would have a little drop-down box so that you could view the conversation in it's entirety instead of seeing a random blurb of a conversation. I also think there shouldn't be any pre-roll ads. I agree with the two channel thing. That would be EPIC!

They used to have a time watched spot on the channel page a while ago. I miss it now. I'm kind of scared to see how much time I've spent here though.
Xander623 1 year ago
@Xander623 oh, really? I didn't know they ever kept track of that.
xperpetualmotion 1 year ago
@xperpetualmotion They probably got rid of the time watched counter when one of them got passed a year of watching loll

that idea about signing in with more acounts at the same time is awesome!

Some of these are actually really good. Like the real-time view counter, iTunes interruption, viewing in thumbnail etc..... You should forward this to the big scary people at youtube and see what happens :O

What if YouTube had a grammar, spelling and intelligence moderator, and you could read comments based on how smart they are, and whether or not they're complementing you.

what if youtube provided a concession stand

What if in the videos uploaded by subscriptions thing it shows all the videos uploaded by their channels that you haven't watched.

@Movie1132 Oh, that's a good idea. I love going through and watching people's super old videos, haha.

What if YouTube had decided that the turn-all-the-videos-upside-down April Fool's gag should be the norm, and left everything that way by default? :-D
AdamTheAlien 1 year ago
Being able to chat with other youtubers that watch the vid at that moment :D
Samsam1034 1 year ago 2
This was awesome. So many interesting and good ideas. I love thinking about things like this. What if we could automatically watch all our subscriptions in order? Like automatically queue them or something, so we could watch videos while doing something else without having to keep clicking on a new video. It'll be really useful in catching up on a lot of videos. :)
PinkPieLover18 1 year ago
@PinkPieLover18 They tried that a while ago, but everyone complained because it prevented people from leaving comments, and it was just really annoying to use.
xperpetualmotion 1 year ago
@xperpetualmotion I remembered that, and I thought it was kinda annoying too, but sometimes I like watching videos that way. Maybe if they tweaked it a little and made it an option? :P
PinkPieLover18 1 year ago
@PinkPieLover18 You can fairly easily make a watch queue from your subscriptions and make them play automatically. I do it a lot. I like that way of viewing.

buhhhhhhhhhh the itunes/youtube idea is BRILLIANT
ickaickaicka 1 year ago
I would LOVE a list of all the videos I've watched, it would be so awesome. Your idea of subscribing, following and becoming a fan in one click reminds me of Ryan's on The Office "WUPHF" :)
During Vidcon I saw a panel with some YouTube Execs and it is possible to buy the video ad and the banner add for a entire video/channel page, but you'd have to pay out of pocket for the ad space. Still, probably a fairly inexpensive way to advertise your own products.
DigitalCable 1 year ago
@DigitalCable It seems weird that you would have to pay to advertise your own product on your own video. I wish there was an option to use the space for your own graphics, and you just wouldn't get paid for it.
xperpetualmotion 1 year ago
I think you can subscribe to a keyword... or at least, *I* have? I had done that in 2006 and my sub to that keyword has stayed intact.
lazyhazycrazy 1 year ago
While some or these are ridiculous, I can totally dig a few of these. What if YouTube created an option to make 3d videos?
Justtubed 1 year ago
@Justtubed There already are some 3D videos on the site. I don't have the right glasses though so I don't know how well they work.
xperpetualmotion 1 year ago
@xperpetualmotion @justtubed There are some 3D videos on YouTube that require glasses, but there are others that work based on you kind of crossing your eyes and looking beyond the screen. Think of those weird 3d pictures you have to squint to see...It's similar to that. Search for 3d
JulieVlogs 1 year ago
@xperpetualmotion I think I remember now that you say something that youtube gave users options of 3d or something like that.... SO how about 4D videos?
Justtubed 1 year ago
This video needs to be featured, and most of the things you mentioned need to happen! Especially multiple subscription boxes, and having multiple accounts share a channel page.
quvious 1 year ago 18
What if youtube threw all uploaded videos through a random editing software before displaying them, so everyone's videos were jumbled and out of order.
purplepeace123 1 year ago
@purplepeace123 that sounds like an April Fools Day trick.

I made a liker chain video today and wanted to put it in the right category... but there was no meme/tag category. So. Yeah.
I really like your videos. I see them when my friends "like" them. But I haven't actually subbed yet and.
MigdalaVered 1 year ago
Didn't youtube have something where you could subscribe to tags before?
ellievlogs 1 year ago
This video needs to be featured or something. Some of these ideas are really awesome! (I liked the one about solving a math problem/word problem before commenting. That would be great for this channel, vlogbrothers, etc. That way, trolls could be kept to a minimum, and nerds would prevail! Probably.)
pepsicola1295 1 year ago
You CAN subscribe to keywords, but you'd never want to.

We could comment in different fonts . . . like Comic Sans or Papyrus! =)
I like your idea about annotations opening a new window. Actually, just in general, I'd like the annotations to be easier to use.

I think partners can put up their own ads but they have to share the revenue with youtube. I could be wrong about that though.

These are all amazing ideas, especially the multiple accounts at once
kipkayify 1 year ago
You basically said everything I'd probably ever want in terms of changes to youtube, other than the videos that would disappear after a certain time. XD That would be handy for when people make announcement videos like "OMG I'M ON BLOGTV NAO." or for a meetup information video etc. etc.
jonsvlogs 1 year ago 2
Wow, you're blowing my mind with all these great ideas to make youtube better. Simply Awesome.

I'm sure this doesn't qualify as very interesting but one of my favorite things over at deviantART is that I can always rely on a hilarious prank every April Fools. One year everyone's user icon was replaced by a little .gif that said "so i hurd u liek Mudkips." I think this would be a really hilarious aspect to add to YouTube because then instead of just reading journal reactions to the pranks, we would post video reactions!
uberwren 1 year ago
@uberwren they do pull pranks on April Fool's Day, but they are often just more annoying than funny. This past year they changed the code so that all the videos were upside-down, the year before that all of the homepage videos were Rick-Rolls

actually youtube USED TO allow you to preview the video in the thumbnail. it would give you 3 random frames from the video in sequence when you moused over. but they removed that, probably because the people who trick you into watching their stupid video with a thumbnail of boobs, complained. :( some really interesting ideas though
todd3293 1 year ago 3
@todd3293 yeah, I remember that. It was so useful so you wouldn't click on some awful video just because it had an interesting thumbnail.
xperpetualmotion 1 year ago
@xperpetualmotion yeah it was! these days most of the videos on the "most viewed" page are all prefabricated thumbnails that are designed to grab your eye. but they give you no clue about what the video content is really like. and thanks for replying to me! :)
todd3293 1 year ago 2
The video starting to play in the thumbnail reminds me of Stile Project. Hey, porn sites have some good stuff.

And maybe the keyword thing.
That would be weird.
Yay for Karenthinks! They are always fascinating.(:

cool ideas, but I know that there is already a way to advertise your own website next to your videos. Talk to Nalts about it.
MichelleTells 1 year ago
@MichelleTells Is there? Well, they definitely don't advertise that option to partners.
xperpetualmotion 1 year ago
And yes, i soooooo agree with @qwertyoctopus that threaded convos would be massively helpful. And the spam option is waaaaay overabused on this site. Youtube should really have the report vs spam options.
I'm still confused about the pre-roll ads, is it like Adsense, where the channel creator has the option of choosing the ad? Like I know the Shaytards are making mad money from advertisers and it ticks me off a bit. SKIP should be an option, if I choose not to pay someone to watch....
mickjen 1 year ago
I <3 the idea of commenting from multiple accounts, the statistics and history idea (though that would become the new "first!"), the idea of being able to search by low views, viewcount in real time (!!!!), and for fuck's sake, if I can choose the ads on my blogger, I should be able to personalize my channel as I want, but it can't go the gay ass myspace route, y'know?
I'm so amazed you have the time to make these videos, though, if I spent more time working and less time watching.....
mickjen 1 year ago
I looked over at the ad when you mentioned it. It's an ad for Google Ads, which made me laugh. Just thought I'd share.
pythonfan001 1 year ago
I think a practical change is that comments that are replies to other comments would have a little drop-down box so that you could view the conversation in it's entirety instead of seeing a random blurb of a conversation. I also think there shouldn't be any pre-roll ads. I agree with the two channel thing. That would be EPIC!
qwertyoctopus 1 year ago
@qwertyoctopus yes, threaded comments would be so useful.
