My grandmother was in the US for 65 years and was unable to speak English. She did understand English. She was proud to be an American though.
Learning a foreign language is not easy for adults. The area of the brain that is for learning languages is bigger when we are young and shrinks as we get older.

Instead she and my grandfather had to make do with having their children translate for them as many immigrants still do today. And that's not the best thing to have when consulting a doctor or lawyer or government agency. My grandmother was in the US for 65 years and was unable to speak English. She did understand English. She was proud to be an American though.
Learning a foreign language is not easy for adults. The area of the brain that is for learning languages is bigger when we are young and shrinks as we get older.
BTW my grandmother's native language was Polish. I wonder how many people assumed it was Spanish.

@chadhub Different times. I am sure things would have been easier for her if various forms and information pamphlets were also in her native language. Instead she and my grandfather had to make do with having their children translate for them as many immigrants still do today. And that's not the best thing to have when consulting a doctor or lawyer or government agency. And my point was that for some immigrants it is not a matter of them not wanting to speak English, but being unable to.

yeah, um, earlier immigrants were NOT in a hurry to learn English. Read a history book, or The Jungle. In fact, in early America there were many languages being written, spoken, and you probably would not understand most of what early English (now Americans) were even saying then. English is not the legal language of the US, there is none.
