  • Very impressive. Thank you. And thank you for being so scientific about the process. There are errors and you show us what errors to avoid! :)

  • this video was so helpful thank you for making it

  • I invent the Future of Solar Light technology! There is nothing worldwide even come close to my Products! It saved 80%-90% of Material and Costs! It also can be used to grow up Foot! • You fuckin idiot lol. Well atleast there on there tight lol...sorry just bustin your chops.

  • Do you think these would work mounted on a sailboat??

  • @fuelban The front of the solar is negative and the back is positive. There are two negative tabbing wires coming from the front and two positive tabbing wires going to the back. When you arrange the cells positive to negative, you are connecting the cells in series, bumping up the voltage. I hope this helped!

  • Hi, another very interesting video guys, thanks, I would like to ask you if you know of any INFO site where I can get the whole data of a cell, I know 1 of 2 silicones are used (crystalline or amorphous) & doped with phosphorous & heated atoms then diffuse throughout the silicon wafer, what I do not know is how a positive & negative is set up within this body, {the two leads you solder} I presume {1 is + & 1 -} how is two terminals able to come out of one source, ? Thanks

    Thom in Scotland.

  • DAMN!!! Where do you get your cells that cheap!!!???

  • So are you Dan Rojas or Ben Ford ? You sure sound like the guy in the Ben Ford video ? Sounds kind of fishy ?

  • Yeah, I was like why is he soldering the wires to the same panel, one panels wires should be connected to another panel etc.Everything is connected in series right?

  • The ending to this video is hilarious.

  • say i have a cell thats broke in half or the corner is broke off. is this still worth using and should i glue it back together?

  • Where can I get those little cells? i have looked everywhere online.

  • @PianoPassionMusic ebay! There are tons of them, but you will have to dig harder to find damaged ones.

  • @PianoPassionMusic look for "Full Tab Broken Solar Cells" in eBay

  • I hate govnmt legislation, but I'd love to see every new home built with a minimum of two solar panels on every roof. Imagine all those cookie cutter neighborhoods going up and Mom/Dad are away at work while all those solar panels are putting energy back on the grid? Of course, any GREAT idea never works because that might save money and we just can't have that... oh no.

  • They should make window blinds out of solar cells. Especially on large commercial buildings.

  • 23 people from the Electric Company have been here!

  • This is an informative video I must say.

    Commercial Solar Panels are Expensive!

Your Only Option is to Build Your own Solar Panels

  • I am looking at having my electric wheelchair modified where the batteries store solar energy instead electricity from an outlet. is this possible?

  • You misunderstood me. I meant that solar panel will be incorporated as tiles and newer to be removed. All DIY with safety. But i need someone to test 2 types of solar panels in depth 3m. Regular and IR panels and tell me decreasing efficiency. I dont have time right now because Im building 5axis cnc or 6... Regards

  • Listen-you run wonderful channel! My quastion is: Will any solar cell produce power in water at depth 2-4m. Because we can use in the bottom of swimming pool. If can and probably will,I will in the future build swimming pool and make videos! jeanlucdemarc@gmail.com

  • @jeanlucdemarc thasts smart as it should aslo provide some heating element to the pool and if you cant put it under water you could try using somethign to float it on top when the pool is not in use.

  • hahaha you tabed all of them to themselves! lol. i got quite a kick out of that. thanks for the great info!!!!!!

  • could we get a list of "ingredients" ? so I have a list of what I need to be ordering :)

  • thnx.

  • hello sir

want know get some information on many solar thing and get the from ?

help thank you for your time

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE Hi, I was wondering how much would a complete solar panel setup to run a computer cost me? The PC has a 450 watts PSU and the LCD is 90 watts ty :D

  • i watched this to learn about solar panels but all i could think about while i watched this is that he sounds gay.

  • dude clean up your yard you live in a shithole...

  • Using packing tape is an awesome idea..going to solder mine soon.

  • This is wonderful, thank you so much for sharing. Sending love to all.

  • you say that it cpsts the same to make as buy a panel, why are you making them then?

  • @c0LLin13 That was if you used glass instead of resin.

  • hi... let me know where can i find this pannels to make a biger pannel by my own... and how many volts and wats per one?? thank you!!!

  • Good idea

  • I would like to know where to buy the broken cells??

  • Why would you use wood panels???? The panels get very hot in the sun and will not weather very well. The sun will break them down too.

  • were u git it

  • All techs have hooked up wires wrong at times but realizing before you finish or energizing the ckt is what matters, nice video. I installed my solar with commercial panels but will make my own panels to save the money.

  • Comment removed

  • Very useful! I subbed and added you to my hydroponics channel. We need more of this! I am slowly heading toward self - sufficiency , getting off the grid, and micro farming.

  • not only are the videos handy and very good instrucktion videos, but they are soooo funny. Great intertainment Thanks man !!!!

  • Tabbed the cells to themselves... LOL!! I did that too....

  • where is best place to get solar cells in bulk? pre-tabbed or untabbed? would prefer non broken. plz msg me with links. thx.

  • 7:40 you missed a tab on the back

  • Dan,

Where is the best place to buy the cracked cells, ebay, or some wholesale distributor, or do you have a link??

  • I'm covering my car with these!

  • Always great vids! Thanks!

  • Thank you very much for the video!! I will watch the other one and see if it mentions where to buy these cells!

  • Thanks for sharing some great ideas! Try to implement lenses and or mirrors on the sides to reflect sunlight onto the cells. Plus the material you are using will reflect a lot of light away from the cells, therefor a small array of mirrors will compensate for that. It wont be pretty, but you get broken mirror pieces in many places to play with :P Who says a solar panel can't be stylish.

  • 2x4 will warp dumbass

  • i cant believe you shot and posted a 11 min video that showed the wrong way to do it. Nice job chief

  • @ramman347 imagine he wouldn't point out the fatal error. You can see, even a dude who build a dozen of them things, can make an error quite easily. It aint hard to pretend to be bad ass, but to show you made a mistake takes courage :)

  • @ramman347 He show you how to do it,and he show you the mistake hi make because it could easily happen to you too, purpose is to avoid that!!!He did very neat job, just soldier wires in wrong direction.

Someone could hide it to avoid get embarrassed, but that could cost you time and money.Nice job Dan,thank you!!!

  • Retard, why did you solder them on the selves

  • @1Nekit1 I can bet you don't know how to hold iron in your hand properly, but still, you allow yourself call someone a retard."Someone" who is trying to teach YOU Einstein something!

  • You will need 10 foot square of that to power your hair dryer!

  • a que pendejo, pero eso nos pasa a veces

  • HEY PUT ONE OF THOSE PLATES ON A BIG SUNFLOWER INSTANT TRACKING

  • This guy's the biggest idiot in the world. Not, cuz he soldered the cells to themselves ,which is a total eff up, but cuz he actualy posted the screw up video on youtube.. what a fuckin dumbass.. THIS VIDEO IS A TOTAL WASTE OF YOUR TIME... DON'T BOTHER WATCHING

  • @ScottyRawdy Quite honest, the idiot is the guy who pretends hes perfect. When a person shares some good info for free, puts time and effort into it and you don't even appreciate it, that makes you look even dummer. Not mentioning you can't even film yourself right. Typical noob error, big mouth and holding the cellphone camera sideways...if that's your style, I want to be the first one to tell you: "Keep the comments for yourself."

  • 1:23

    ahahahaha I LOVE IT!

  • things too come ends times all most please use the sun too warm u from winter there is safe please too me i will be at mount sunflower in kansas i will be there no if u live on close lines add U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake

earthquake.usgs.gov too your cell text updates u most make them or buy them

  • great info

  • Hey rat shit! I'm not a bible thumper! I have seen these generators work in person. And building one! Dumbass!

  • you need to wet your iron with solder makes it even quicker

I am going to steal your tape idea :)

  • idiot

  • Solar is crap unless of course you live in the wild! Visit WITTS! Don't waste your time. Solar is a scam for now.ti will take another ten years to be worth it. DO THE MATH

  • @keygenswb You do the math. Praying for electricity doesn't work. Solar energy isn't a miracle. It's science. WITTS is patently absurd!

  • where to you bought this cells

    greetings from germany ;)

  • I to would like to know where you had purchase your panels from, I would like to link my solar light to one battery and one big panel to get most of the sun from, some of my lights r on because of the direction of the sun

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE where did you buy your solar panels for such a chap price?, ive been looking around and reserching about solar energy it would be really helpful if you could tell where i could buy them .im currently doing a science fair project and and have to work on the cheap pleas help.

  • TO Greenpowerscience: do these cells ever fail and need replaced? What is the life expectancy of one? If you enclose it in resin, you cant replace them, correct?

  • LOL IS IT EMP PROOF. ????? I DON't WHAT A SOLAR FLARE TO KILL MY ONLY POWER. I'll go with tesla megnet motor and wind and solar. never deploy all at once. Remember we are in the Photon Belt NASA says we are in for the next 1,500 to 2,500 years. SO YES i'll Buy THE PARTS THAT I CAN TAKE A PART. I can't take a part what you are doing. One EMP it's worthless. SO HERE IS THE SECRET..TESLA COILS. YOU ATTACH A TESLA COIL TO EVERY CELL. NO NEED FOR WIRES THAT WILL BURN UP.

  • @killerbee04x EMP maybe not, solar flare proof, yes. Because a solar flare affects the power grids blowing up substations.

  • Don't you have to solder one cell to the positive side and the following cell to the negative side?

From this video, it seems that you solder everyone of your cells to the same side.

    Please explain???

  • @jmugrad1 The tabs they come with are attached to the front of the cells. The soldering is hooking those front tabs to the back of the next cell. The cells are all hooked up so that the front of one is soldered to the back of the next. Tabs at the ends are hooked to the another string or a charge controller. Each cell is half a volt so you need a bunch in series to get the voltage you need to charge a 12 volt battery. Most panels have extra to handle low sun days and charge to 14 volts.

  • 1000 watt broken cell kit on ebay for $260 +$90 shipping.

250 Watt panels here are $600 to $700 ... massive saving for just having to solder them together :-)

hmm $350 per kilowatt or $2000 ? the difference between broken and not broken.... daaaaamn

  • Aw you know that was cool of you to admit your mistake dude. If more people had the guts to be like that the world would be better. Still you managed to get the point across teaching by letting us experience your mistakes and successes with you. Good on you! Now I want to make my own stuff, thanks for the help.

  • What the heck, compost accurs.

  • hahaha.. actually it turns out you made a mistake

  • lol. I'm actually REALLY glad you SHOWED the mistake you made... because now I'm aware I need to take extra care.

  • AWESOME VIDEO! thank :)

  • the technology to save our planet is out there and has been out there for over a hundred years. We just need to the "want" to save our world more than we want a new ipod.

  • @bnewton81 We think and we are on the same frequency, my unknown friend, I hope in the near future there will be more and more people who think like you and me, and especially those who we have for our "leaders",many greetings from Macedonia!

  • @bnewton81 I want an ipod!!!

  • @bnewton81 The technology has been here for THOUSENDS of years. Google "Baghdad batteries".

  • @bnewton81 make some solar powered ipod chargers and i'll buy from you. if for some reason the power grid goes I want to be stuck with these desert island songs I have picked out

  • @bnewton81 The world does not need saving. The world is going to be fine. The PEOPLE are screwed.

  • @bnewton81 I hear you peace and power out.

  • @bnewton81 I'm slowly turning my wife to not wanting a new ipod..

  • @bnewton81 water combustion engines

  • YES, I GOT IT, BUT HOW MUCH DOES EACH CELL COST AND WHERE DO YOU GET THEM????

  • @jeta45 Type solar cells on ebay, you can buy boxes of them.

  • @jeta45 EBAY. look for solar cells. You should find what you are looking for. Tons of sellers have bulk lots and kits.

  • @mrabuckten

    Clone him?

Na, just give knowledge to people, that's what this video is for =)

    USE THIS INFORMATION!

  • Great VIDEO!!! I have used your video in different varation. Your information is great. I have made 6 DIY PANELS;different varation. Saving $400.00 to $500.00 per year; but contiously adding to panels one cell at a time. Incapisalation info is great. Will apply to my next panel!! EPOXY VERSIS SEALGARD.

  • Dan......slow down.......tabbing cells to themselves !!!

  • I bought cells like this and built my own panels, had 22volts output but after about 3 months the output dropped to about 10 volts. Its not worth the time and effort to built the panels in this way. My advice is to save up and buy good finished panels you will not be disappointed like i was!!!!!!

  • what type of battery? deep cell or marine. to use 12 volt DC battery to power 110 volt AC appliances yes you need an inverter.

  • do i need an inverter, do i need a battery? what type of battery? what va battery do i get? where is the vid for these question?

  • how to make solar pannal cell for solar pannal plez reply me thanks

  • To make spacing easier would it make sense to use the little spacers you can get for laying floor and wall tiles? I guess if you want everything to be nice and even?

  • you left one without resin @ 7:41

  • cant find anywhere to buy these little cells D:

  • 7 people work for the power company.

  • Hi Dan, great video, explained everything really well.

I have added your videos to my blog which is all about solar panels.

I might add a few more of your videos if you don't mind as they are really informative

  • With respect to tabbing the cells to themselves, I think it was courageous of you to admit your mistake on camera and not be deterred by it.

  • @vidbid1

That goes to show not everyone is perfect. But rather than discarding the cells could you just add some tab material and connect them or would that create a larger problem? Kind of new at this solar panel idea thing so not sure on connections that in depth yet.

  • can you tell me where to find the cells?

  • I have a thought about DIY solar power. I think a cheaper home made solar panel be a better option if you can reduce it to 1/5 the cost of a commercial panel, build it so it can last at least 1/5 the time of a commercial solar panel, which works out to be economical if you replace the solar panel with newer more high tech panels, once every 3 years. This works out better than buying a commercial one, as long as the cost and time is constant, because of the increasing efficiency of new panels.

  • @mrabuckten

We don't need 1000 dans, we just need people to try to make them. My father and I are dummies in comparison to Dan but we had no issue making our own. I wont lie though we stole a lot of ideas from Dan's videos :P

We also got free glass from craigslist (tons of it) and got our battery cables from cars at junk yards etc.

  • Thanks for showing your mistake, great video.

  • With a name like Rojas, of course you will use lead-free solder! Heh heh. Rojas... RoHS...

Something I remember from my Solar electric car days was that you could make your encapsulant antireflective by embedding microscopic inverted pyramid structures in the outer surface. It took a lot of doing, and you only saw corporate competitive teams attempt it. I wonder if you could embed that into the surface of your encapsulant while curing.

  • how many cells would you need to run a 5 volt radio at about 1amp? I built a solar radio out of a battery powered one but i still need the cells to power it! it is a 5 volt radio but it can run on any voltage up to 25 volts DC or 120 volts AC i was just thinking of getting one of those solar trical chargers boats what do you think should i just make one or buy it please help me out if you can thanks Ben please reply

  • @mainelyelectric You get about 1/2V per cell, so ten cells would be required to reach 5V. The type of 3" x 6" cells he uses are 1.8W each, which means they should push up to 3.6A of current. You could use a smaller cell type with at least 500mW each to run your radio. I built a small panel for a portable radio once, which could run the radio in full sunlight and charged the NiMH batteries anyway when the radio was not in use.

  • @ChristineGebara wondering too, where he got tabbed cracked cells

  • i dont understand the economy of doing this. what is the total cost comparing to the premade and where to get the materials?

  • where do you get those cells from?

  • @Mena142 Look for broken cells on ebay.

  • If it costs about the same to buy pre-built panels as it does to build them, do you have a vendor you would recommend?

  • Thanks for the videos. I was thinking about doing this all weekend and just saw that you posted these videos. Thanks again.

  • I thought it was weird that he was soldering the cells to themselves..... Great demo though, good info.

  • haha about 42 dollars

  • I'm suck a big fan of your work. Thanks for all your brilliant ideas.

  • I watched a 12 min video just to see an error ? ts, ts ,ts.

  • When can we expct Part 3

  • i got bored at 2min...

  • @PROUDsk8er AHAH you have ADD you suck at learning

  • @Taud go f*** urself u f****** troll any normal person would get bored watchin this boring crap.

  • @PROUDsk8er troll? The majority of us seemed to have understood what he said its normal for the majority of us to have a 15 minute attention span if you can only do 2 mins and you bitch about it, its You thats trolling, get help with your disability instead of complaining on videos : P

  • @Taud Its not that i don't understand it, its that i don't feel like siting here for twelve min listening to some weirdo with no life and an annoying lisp talk about how to make your own solar panel. And i wasn't complaining about anything, for some reason you felt you needed some attention so you decided to insult the first person u saw hoping u would start an argument. And what if i really did have ADD and ur comment caused me to be depressed about my life and u found out i committed suicide?

  • @Taud how would u feel then if your pathetic attempt for attention costed me my life?

  • LOL I love It! Taking one for the team, and messing up so we don't have to!

Watching you solder those tabs was well informative enough, we'd never really known you had done it backwards. So, a great lesson in a lesson, and for that we thank you.

Hey, maybe a good idea would be to draw a few arrows with a sharpie on the tape, the direction you want the tabs to lay before soldering. I think I will surely do that. :)

Keep up the cool and informative vids Dan, Thanks!

  • Michaelcoolguy86 has to be the 14 year old loner sitting in his moms basement in his bvd's we always hear about. This level of " humor" is like Bevas and Butthead. Not too creative guy! Spend your time doing something positive

  • Tabbing to itself - that's like plugging your power strip into itself - INFINITE POWER, baby!

  • 900 degrees! What if you burn yourself at that temperature?

  • @komjj It hurts.

  • Dan,

Have you tested your solar cell encapsulation process to determine which wavelengths of light might be readily absorbed or reflected?

Some kinds of polycarbonates or plastics will block different wavelengths of light. Though I don't know for sure, even though it appears clear, its entirely possible the UV spectrum could be blocked with the use of some plastics greatly limiting the solar panels output.

  • "how not to" videos are alot more entertaining and informative than "how to" videos

  • This dude is awesome.

  • WHERE IS PART 2?! WHY CANT I FIND IT!

  • From experience I found that broken cells lower the amperage and increases the voltage. Each piece of a cell creates .5 volts. A whole cell will like your working with 3x5 inch creates about 3.5 amps but break it and each piece will make half that much. The whole panel will create only as much amps as the weakest cell.

  • Where did you get the solar cells?

  • @ArduinoAlan Also wondering where you got the cells for that cheap

  • What about sealing the unit with 100% silicone caulk?

  • @martinparmer I heard that Silicone II, is corrosive to electronics. Of course I have not got a definitive answer as to HOW corrosive. I am tinkering with solar, so if it means my panel only lasts 1/2 as long that is just fine. I thought the same thing myself when it comes to the back side of the panel.

  • whats the most effective metal tabbing wire?

  • Hey Dan, I'm all for DIY but solar quickly closed that savings gap. Lets talk economics it costs $2.59/w to have a complete system professionally installed. complete panels alone cost $1.75/w so I did some calculations on how much it would cost to DIY, grade A cells on ebay $0.40/w glass from china $1.00/w micro inverter $0.17/w that already adds up to $1.92/w not including aluminum, resin, shipping, personal time... It's much cheaper to out right have it installed with government incentives.

  • Cool Video! oops, oh well on the oops. shit happens. we live and learn. Life Goes on.

  • Aww Dan don't be embarrassed, think of that simple mistake as a lesson that just saved many first time DIY'ers a whole lot of time and discouraging frustration; and also teaching a lesson in humility. I kinda like how your skill level isn't particularly specialized and only a notch or so above "knowing just enough to be dangerous" as it completely eliminates the intimidation factor in learning/doing something new. Your adventurous get-your-hands-dirty spirit makes learning fun. Part 2 Please!

  • But will it blend?

  • the only reason i havent done a panel yet is the prise wasn't much different BUT now thank to your vid I'm going to give it a shot please send link to where I can get those pre tabed cells and the resin and thanks for the vids keep them coming
