God, why did Terry have to die! I was in love with him 4 years & when we finally got together i left him & moved to NYC!!!!!! I miss you Terry Hollywood!!!!
Classic! Can't beat it. Havin a Zero Boys tribute show in H-Town, Tejas..."Dirty Alleys, Dirty Minds does "Vicious Circle" for all the peeps in the tizzle
Another great 80s midwestern punk band were The Didjits from the 20,000 pop. Mattoon, IL, not far from Champaign, IL and the University of IL, where they played much. Didjits have a similar, but less hook-laden, sound. Driving high chords and rock and roll progressions but in a punk style. Often similar vocal style as well.
If interested in the Didjits, check out their youtube for "Judge Hot Fudge". But they were a little more experimental and "serious" than Zero Boys. Personally, I like the Zero Boys songs the best. But both of these bands seriously rock.
The Zero Boys are from Indianapolis and have just started playing shows again (2009) and are still based out of Indy. Yes - we have a killer punk scene here - check the Melody Inn any Saturday night!
YES - Indianapolis has one of the most volatile punk scenes on the planet. Google punkrocknight and see our weekly punk show - almost 10 years in the running!
One of the best punk bands ever and there not even from cali. They signed to a new label and are re releasing there original two albums, which really rock. Glad there still around and playin shows.
Saw these cats Saturday at Emo's. Tufty is still the "fastest fingers in the Midwest"!!. The Wax Museums gave them a run for their money though. Every band from Denton rules!
Those songs are actually pretty good considering this was back in 1981. This is punk for sure...but can the crowd be anymore dead. I wouldnt be surprised if the lights came on to find that they were all cardboard cut-outs.
The Pizza Castle sold alcohol, had live bands, and you could be under 21 (the legal drinking age) and 12 year olds could still see bands. So how were they able to do it??? Don, the owner of the Castle, who Tufty speaks to in this clip, read the small print on the law on "nightclubs" and found that it wasn't considered one as long as there wasn't any dancing, or had a dance floor.
So instead of building a stage and dance floor, when show time came, tables were moved and crunched together and the band set up against the wall. Go figure...Indiana law..and the "Dancing Police" did show up 3-4 times a month...and the law was changed in the mid 80's.
Pizza Castle was one of the few venues in Indianapolis that showcased bands like the ZB's for the underage crowd.. They were always a great live band and had a lot of local support. Pretty much the entire Punk Rock scene was in and around the Broadripple area in the 1980's..and then it went away.
Gutterboy, that song was on a CD called "Make it Stop" which you can probably find on various music sites, like Amazon or whatever. Great CD by the way......
wow, 26 years ago but still my heart skipped a few beats while I was watching this video.... You can hear it's been only two months after they recorded 'vicious circle' They sound just as tight as on the album. Funny how he smiles while singing 'drug free youth'. Zero boys straight edge? don't think so...
After I video taped the show, I watched it and stored it away. The tape was stored in a box all this time and I came across it a few months ago while moving.
Man---unbelievable footage of one of the greatest US punk bands of all time! Great sound, too! Here's an idea---you should contact the band (they recently have played some reunion shows) about getting them this footage to release as a DVD. Old punks generally need cash, right? I'm sure it would sell really well.
We are in the process of making the whole show look AND sound the best it can. This compilation clip took over 2 weeks to tweak, process and complile. Technology in 1981 was not like it is now. (at least in the general consumer world) We would like to get input from Paul, Mark & Tufty included as bonus material so fans of "the greatest US punk band" can have an ultimate DVD release that can go hand in hand with Vicious Circle and Livin' In The 80's. We hope for a late summer release.
