I rarely agree with Rush, but on this issue, I agree 100%. Destroying an artisan industry with excessive taxes on products only consumed by a small fraction of the population. Shall we also directly tax other items that people enjoy, such as chocolate, cupcakes, handmade leather goods and fountain pen ink? How about model trains and Legos, so parents can no longer afford to purchase those items for their children? This is a poorly crafted bill that punishes pipe/cigar hobbyists.

@kipptumor If the government is run by evil big business, then why are many corporations highly taxed and regulated? If they truly ran everything then there would be low taxes and low regulation so they could actually afford to produce things in the U.S.

I totally understand cigarettes being taxed. They have hundreds of added chemicals and increased nicotine levels. Cigarettes are very highly dangerous. Cigars and pipe tobacco however does not have these added chemicals and increased nicotine levels. The nicotine levels in these tobaccos for pipes and cigars are controlled by their curing methods. I think Congress has suffered from the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND in not learning the factual differences in the types of tobaccos.

Actually, the opposite of what you said is true: fascism is when the government runs big business. not the reverse. Italys Fascist period is perhaps the most famous example of this, behind the more obvious brand that Hitler ushered.

Big business running government is not what fascism is or ever has been. that claim is an often repeated myth that has no basis in fact or history.

The tax is an unfair and biased attack on smokers. People against smoking do not have to smoke but should not dictate to others whether or not they are allowed to smoke. Furthermore, the tax goes to provide healthcare for people who do not pay into the system. This is an unfair drain on those who pay for their own healthcare. Someone else's children are not my responsibility. If you can't afford to have kids, DON'T HAVE THEM!

All they need to do is manufacture Large Cigar packages just like Cigarette packs. Again though we already pay taxes for families to receive free health insurance programs. Again another chance for Change which is to ruin my freedom to choose to smoke. What if we all chose to grow tobacco plants and made our own would we still be taxed? The fact is until smoking is outlawed, smokers have a right now to be set upon with abusive taxes simply because they can't fight back. A pack of cigs cost $6 in RI....80% of that is taxes. Smokers pay MORE than their fair share of taxes. where is the fucking settlement money? Where is the excessive state and federal taxes going now? Regardless of what you think about Rush, this cigar tax is a VERY big issue. This tax will put my company out of business and I will have to lay off over 30 employees. My employees have children, and health care that covers those children. It WILL kill the industry, the tax is a house of cards. How in the world do you expect to generate any tax revenue off cigars when we can't sell any? This cigar tax will cost about 400,000 American jobs.
