When everyone in my house has gone to bed (babies & hubby) I get on to you tube and enjoy watching the produce garden- its my time :-). You are such a darling
"If you build it....they will come" lol, sorry, had to say that, haha
You can also post different places that u would take any chickens anyone wanted to get rid of. Will it not get pretty hot in a completely tin building? Seems like it would get hot as an oven in there...guess if u see them lying listless fanning themselves outside u will know, hahaha
Hey I have been watching your videos for a long time so far, been waiting for you to finish the coop! So nice, and much bigger, I'm amazed of what you did! thanks for sharing, also I'm doing the same for 4-H! wish me some luck, and you too!
Try and get some of your chicken feed free. atm I get lettuce from the local shop's bins - I just ask them, bring my own bag & fill it up (the bin next to the lettuc section). You could possibly raise up some insects or worms and let them scratch & consider a rotating grazing system with sunflowers, leafy greens, grains and fruit trees - the messy ones that drop heaps of fruit for chickens:)
Thinking of feeding the chooks...I was reading Jackie French's book 'Backyard Self Sufficiency' talking about growing staples..wheat etc How the grain mix for chooks, the health food shops and the soup mixes and the like from supermarkets are good sources of grain to grow. Maybe you could throw a few tough seeds around like buckwheat, millet, rye or sunflower seeds from a packet of parrot food.
I'm not sure what kind of critters you have in OZ that will kill chickens at night, but I'm sure there must be a few. You might consider plugging the holes you have around the bottom of the coup or you will have break-ins.
Good to see you back & cheerful it seems. Nice clear sound on this camera. All you need is two hens & a rooster & let them set eggs. We had a bantam once set 21 eggs. Later you can let roosters sit in a tree outside hen house or just eat them lol. Keep one though! I prefer Rhode Island or Barred Rocks. Tossdart
Looks like you have the ideal property and living quarters for your chickens-- I hope you get some free chickens quickly.
I've ordered some baby chicks--I pick them up on the 4th of May. I need to get on building their coop! I don't think any of it will be free for me, but it's worth the investment. Once the coop is built and the initial investments made, the only costs will be the food. I'm really really excited!
I'm also making a potato garden out of tires real soon! Learned a lot from you!
WOW looks great! The only thing I would be worried about are outside predators and unfortunate weather conditions. It does look like it may not hold up good against super strong winds. BUT, I've never been to Australia and I don't know how severe weather gets in your area. Here in Michigan, we get winds that rips the siding off our houses!
Looks good Christian! The chickens will love it. Did you get the ideas for the nesting box containers from my video? :) MY chickens eat lots of bugs and it cuts down on the feed consumption in the summer. Plus you wind up with higher protein eggs. Glad to see you posted another video and I will be looking for an update once your chickens are moved in!
My name is Mike. I have been watching your videos for close to a year now. Your chickens will love that coop. I will try to get a few more videos of my chickens up on youtube.
Yeah this is an awesome project and great to see so many other people inspired by it... after years of not having chickens (partly due to the trauma of repeated fox-massacres) this series of vids has inspired me to get some again. The fox-proofing I suggested is really just a minor addition to help save some heartbreak (and $) in the future, cheers
It is wonderful to see what you are up to. We are moving a cage today to a new place in the garden and it may one day house chickens. It is steel and had to be cut to move, a bit unstable.
Wow, nice work! Just one problem, foxes will dig under the tin shed wall at night and kill everything inside. Pig wire across the bottom of the chickenhouse will stop 'em, or for a more chicken-friendly solution see comment on chicken coop pt3. Anyway, great job and all free and recycled, ripper!
So do I.. Southern NSW. I spent my childhood sacrificing chooks to foxes with setups like this. Whether there is one chook or a hundred a fox will tunnel under and kill every last one. They only come out at night and will patiently spend all night to dig. Not worth spending all the time and money to rear chooks to laying stage and then come out one morning to find a bloodbath. You don't have to believe me, any basic book on keeping chooks will tell you this stuff.
Their are plenty of fox's around where Christian lives and also where I live near Eltham they are everywhere they smell the cooks from a long way away a dog might help to keep them away i have had none of my chook's taken since i invested in a small dog.
I'm so happy you're back. Glad to see your smile and love the coop. Great job and wonderful to see you smiling and happy again. I've got 12 chicks and building the coop right now.
So glad so see you back and looking good. Gotta love to see that smile. Awesome chicken coop (chook heaven): very Aussie, plenty of room in the shed and the yard (any lemon tree in there?), good ventilation and natural light inside the shed, the tires ready for that super rich manure and maybe some eggs. The eggs would be a bonus: just the manure would be worth it. I haven't had a farm egg since I was a kid on my great Uncle's farm, the best. The yoke was bright orange.
not sure how active craigslist is in your area, but i've seen people offering free chickens occasionally where i live in the US. look under the farm+garden area, or type in chickens in the search box of craigslist. hope this helps some people.
Good job on the coop! I've been looking for free food to feed chickens, turkeys, ducks and even pigs. Since our winters get so cold, I didn't want to have to buy food. I've found a few different insects that I'm testing out to see how easy they are to raise. So far I've had great success with mealworms and superworms. They are super easy and it's pretty cheap to feed them. Superworms are a bit more work and take longer but still easy.
Ooops I hit "flag" on THIS video.....have never used that or even knew what it did Great setup for your upcoming chickens You did a fabulous job and should be very proud of yourself. Best of luck with all the other issues. Hope things work out well for you. All the best
The coop and yard looks fantastic! It's great that you were able to recycle so many material...I would love to do something like what you have done..and free is right in my budget =)
I love all of your videos, they are really informative and motivational. Your place is really coming together and looks great!
WELCOME BACK Enjoyed watching the coop video as I am thinking on adding chickens next year and always appreciate your advice. Looking forward to more videos and anxiously awaiting your website. I am getting into vermicomposting and hoping to recycle the waste with worms and then use some of the worms for feeding the chickens. I am still in the planning stages with the whole thing but always moving forward with my plans. Looking forward to the addition of your chickens. Take care and God bless.
During the winter if it gets snowy and cold, feed the chickens mainly nothing but table scraps and cracked corn. It's cheaper by a mile than buying them regular feed. You did a fine job on the coop so far though. Chickens can hop/fly pretty high, so I'd keep an eye on avenues of escape such as the tire pile. lol
I flagged the douchebag who stole your video. I also went through all his other stolen videos and gave them a one star rating. If he wants to be a dick, he can be a one star dick. :)
glad to see you back,we have all been worried. chicken coop is alot bigger than i had imagined, looks good. i guess the thieves on the other channel had no idea how many loyal viewers you have, and thought it would be unnoticed, foolish mistake!!!!
Glad to see ya back! Was worried about you. Sorry about the car and cameras given you more stress. Chicken coop looks great and I flagged the video stealer!
Looks cozy enough. I'm a little jealous - my grandmother had chickens, and even though I wasn't too fond of cleaning or plucking them, I have to admit - I haven't had a decent-tasting egg or chicken since my grand-parents sold their farm. I don't remember how much feed she gave them, but she put a lot of table scraps out - what they didn't eat attracted bugs, which they happily ate. Best-tasting scrambled eggs ever. Any pythons in your part of AU that might be a concern?
Flagged for you, kind of complimentary but not fair, tick the box on your vid editing when uploading that blocks others TV or otherwise from enbedding your vids, if you want to block this stuff. Good job on the coop. What hens you looking to get?
