The "Gas" Bill, actually they used "fuel". You are so wrong, it took a complete crew of highly trained specialists to get this BIRD up, along it's way, and down again. The major problem with flying this antique monster would be the total impossibilty of obtaining a qualified crew PLUS the logistics of about 200 Million DOLLARS, just to set up the airport and security.
I lived in Tucson in 1956-57. David Monthan AFB was the AF boneyard and they were retiring the B-36 fleet. You cannot understand what they were like if you didn't see and feel them. We would feel the ground shake before we heard them, run out of our classroom and watch them on their final approach for their last flights.
The only one I know of is at Wright Patterson Air Base but it doesn't fly. I don't think any fly. Probably couldn't afford the gas bill even if it could fly.
@osgood54 There are 4 of the beautiful birds left in existance. There is one at the Castle Air Museum in Atwater, Ca. There is one at Pima Air Musuem in Tucson, Az None of them fly any longer. My daddy was a member of S.A.C. He flew 51-5734 the 36 that was used in the 1955 film starring Jimmy Stewart.

@osgood54 There is one at Casle Air Museum (formerly Castle AFB) in Merced, CA. They also have one of the first Hydrogen Bombs next to it, inert of course ;)
Zwangsman, I lived in Poly off Seminary, and they would make the east turn and come right over the house at 3000 or so. Shake every thing that was not tied down. Sounded so sweet.
@SaberTanker22 The F---ing "Bear" doesn't EVEN sound like the B-36, I have stood in the flight path at Biggs Air Force Basein 1955 while B-36's landed, and...IT AIN'T NO Tupolev Bear, regardless of what a Tupolev sounds like.
I lived as kid in AFB housing over end of south runway at Carswell AFB. B-36's would take off directly over house. The entire house would vibrate and shake!
From the front, droned like a recip. From the back, shrieked like a jet. Could do 410mph, not fast enough to outrun jet fighters of the day. Took 24-36 hours to prepare for a mission, hence unlike B-47 and 52, could not scramble. Could fly at 45000'; recon missions may have reached 55000'. Weirdest drive train in history: R4360 was most powerful recip ever mass produced. Pusher props. 4 jets modified to burn AV gas, 2/3 of jet power of B-47.
I find it funny that they not only had 6 Radial Props but it also had 4 General Electric J47 Turbojets just to help lift it off the ground...amazing aircraft
The bad ass B-36 would Rock the house and vibrate every window in town .IKE had a big stick to keep USSR in check. As well keep TEXACO OIL COMPANY in the chips.
The last I heard them was in 1957 when they flew over my house3 in a row a minute apart for 4 rows . We did not worry about the USSR not with the B-36 they were the coolest biggest bad ass things in the sky.
@rvargas68, they rattled the windows on our barracks during take offs, i spent 4 years in sac as a security guard, after i came back from guam i was stationed at sac headquarters, offit afb nebraska
6 turning 4 burning.

Very impressive. They should have been used to wipe North Korea off the map of the world right at the start of the war.
