Was there a vacuum, and then a lawn mower? I don't think you could have chosen a worse time to record, hahaha. Even though there were distractions I really love this piece, and thought you did good.
@profslump20078 if you are so gifted then why is it we haven't heard of you yet, why aren't you some big shot player? Taking in consideration none of us recognize your work I think it's safe to assume you're just some bitter person looking up videos on YouTube to criticize, and if this video isnt of your liking then just find some other one that is, instead of upsetting someone who's obviously working hard. Go bother someone else with your bitter unsuccessful self
I think this sounds great. I’m working on this piece and gathering a bunch of my favorite youtube versions to listen to while I work on it. This version definitely made my playlist. Thanks!
Any criticism just gives you more reason to improve.... Don't dwell on the comments... just do your thing, perfect your skills, and master the piece. Playing piano is not about getting nice comment.
Each one us of who play or perform on the piano take from the music, and enjoy it in our way. This food for the soul is enjoyed many different ways. Keep playing, kid, make music a life long passion. Let no one steal your dreams!
The people who have been ultra critical of this performance need to take a hard look in the mirror. There is nothing wrong with the piano playing in this video. After all, it is the performance of an amateur ( in the non-pejorative sense) and not of a professional. Instead of tearing apart this young woman, as some of you have callously done, why not simply encourage her to continue her studies? She deserves much credit for tackling such a wonderful and difficult piece of music!
The only suggestion I have is to watch the atempo section with the big chords after the agitato...you seemed to go wayy faster than the original tempo.
I liked the rubato use in the agitato section though (:
Like the others, I would just like to say use a little more feeling in the piece.
Well played. :D
Oh and a piano tuner might help ;) No offense, the piano doesn't do the piece much justice.
I have a question for all of you pianists out there: what pedal does what? I played a few chords on piano while trying out the pedals but I don't really hear a difference.
The right most pedal lifts the dampers off the strings and causes the note to continue after the key is released. The left most pedal shifts the hammer assembly so the hammers strike only one string thus softening the note at least on grand pianos. The center pedal keeps the dampers that were raised when the pedal was pressed raised while the others remain down. Thus allowing those particular notes to sustain while others do not.
@fluteHinata The damper (far right) blurs the notes, it's the most commonly used.
The sostinuto [sp?] (middle...on most pianos...some don't have them) holds out a specific note until you lift it. You have to play the note[s]/chord[s] first then press it down to work.
And the far left which I don't remember what it's called at the moment moves all of the hammers over to 2 strings or 1 [depending if you're in the bass or treble section of the piano] therefore making it softer.
Whats with all the elitist comments lol? So what! its sounds good as is I'm sure she will get better in time cut her some slack. Constructive critism is worthy like fencergirl816 mentioned.
Was it just me or did the volume seem to be a whole lot louder than PPP and P? The tone seemed to go away a great deal in the second Lento, too. So many people rush the Tempo I marking! I have no idea why...maybe the Pesante marking makes people think fast and heavy for some reason.
The pedal was a little muddy. Try using the "middle pedal" for the bass notes. It makes it sound less muddy. Some parts were a little rushed. It seemed like your hands were like, bouncing, but that's just me being overly critical. The agitato section was very good, but where you get back to the 1 tempo(the double staff section) you need to keep that at the same speed as the first part(Lento) which goes very slow. But very good try! Very good. :]
the only person that can say that i suck is me! no one else is to tell me that!!! they dont know what i go through to learn a piece and turn it into art! unless i post a video and you see and hear me play you can say anything you want but untill that time keep your comments about me quiet!

take the post down! its bad and theres too many worng notes. to much pedel and no feeling put in it! your bench is also too high for you. do you have back pain when you play at that inrument?? i sure would!
Well done, I know that this piece os quite technically challenging to pull off, and i could see that you gave it youre all To take this piece to a next level i would recommend listening to "Ashkenazy plays Rachmaninoff Prelude in C". Ashkenazy is one of the best interpreters of Rachmaninoff,
also you could do with a little more pedal control, but overall a stunning performance,
cool interpretation in the last part, but i think you should go for a more majestic feel throughout. I'm learning it too so i know the middle is tricky. :) slow and strong in the first section, EVEN in the middle (you had a good tempo though) and REALLY loud in the last part and slower. But overall great job.
Could have used some dynamics and more emotions. It's titled a prelude, so it's like an introduction; the beginning isn't normally played super loud for that very reason or it's not an intro, but the beginning of the story. Listen to Rachmaninoff perform this, it begins very calmly and subtle and ends with the Russian bells that are ringing and soft. If you studied Hanon, all exercises require the "light" touch and gradual speed with light touch. That should help you play soft in fast passages.
I don't agree with you there. Parts of the final section are marked FFFF, the polar opposite of ringing and soft. I think to say a prelude is supposed to be quite or that an introduction is always soft is a little ridiculous. Besides, I believe (I don't have the sheets at hand) that the beginning is marked MF. Still I agree with your general point that this interpretation lacks dynamics. I would say more importantly that the phrasing needs to be worked on. Still, wonderful attempt! Luck xXx
vc se preocupou tanto em acertar o tempo da musica que se esqueceu de passar a emoção que a musica precisa...essa musica não pede que você respeite o tempo mas que ache o seu proprio ...tempo que passe um certo ar sombrio... heheheh
@profslump20078 lets see your video of you playing Rach hot shot! 99percent of you critics tearing apart this young girl couldnt play the first 5 notes of this. In fact I doubt many of you can even play piano very well at all. But I guess you can all be You Tube trolls who can tear apart a young girl who has talent maybe to give meaning to your fat miserable lives sitting in front of the internet doing "shit".
@JILLFIREHAWK777 you know...its true that this piece is difficult to play, but the real difficulity is to play it well...and im not tearing apart a young girl who has talent. she doesnt have any talent. so im just tearing apart a girl without talent, you understand. and who the fuck are you to tell me about my piano skills??? believe me, if you would understand the true meaning of music and of playing the piano you would agree that this girl has no talent at all...sry, but this is true.
@profslump20078 How you define talent? How many mechanicus there have been who said there are the best? She is technically gifted otherwise she won't be able to pull of the chords.
When it comes to emotion she is of course not comparable to Ashkenazy this is out of question, but who is?
Did you ever play that piece? What gives you the right to tear her apart?
@DrCockX ok now listen. I played this piece. its fucking hard I know. but if you know to play it, that doesnt mean that you are technically gifted. now...talent is a mix of technic, heart, and sanity....and this girl doesnt have any technic, any musicality. She or her pianoteacher...one of them has to be insane. and you know, I m not tearing her apart. Im just telling the truth...I m sry, but she has no talent at all...
@profslump20078 I agree with you, and I'm sure the actual performer here will agree with you as well. As a piano player myself, I can't stand when there is no inspiration or feeling in my music. It is boring and dual, and I just prefer not to play at those times. This wouldn't take much work to clean up though, very messy. But not lacking in talent so much as feelings.
well done. you play the most like the recording of rachmaninov playing this piece than anyone ive seen. nobody ever plays fast where they should. the end could have been a bit softer and slower, but still great job.
I replaced the top note in the left hand and played that note with the right hand, and vice versa with the bottom note of the right hand. It ends up, if you do this, being the same notes, just an octave from each other. I found this much easier to remember.
Now, If I am slapping Mr. Sergei in the face by doing this instead of just playing it the way it is supposed to, I will not stop doing it.
ive been working on this since summer of 09. im closing in fast on the final three bars!
i didnt practice pretty much anything for december and now that xmas is over this week ive started playing again in which ive had two consecutave days i practiced over 6 hours!
it takes time and alot of effert on your part! something i have to tell myself: no one is going to learn this music for you! thats the truth if YOU wanna play it!
EXTREMELY hard song to play, great work... just work on the feeling, you should really exagerate the movement of your hands and the volume should rise a LOT
I really love how you played this one elenawen! Used lots of expression in the right parts! I thought the dog was pretty cool just wandering in hahaha. You seemed to be a little uncomfortable, is your seat a little too high for you? The piano sounds really good as the other people have said!
If you read up on the composers. A lot of them had a deep connection with their religious faith. I dont see how this girl's is any different from that.
i know what you mean, when i started playing this 2 year ago, it was very hard for me, even tho my hands are pretty big ( i was 12 ), and my teacher said " comn lets stop this " i was like " no!" and after a year, when i finished it i played it in a big concert :D was great :)
I like playing this song because it's so dramatic...I prefer the "big boomy" songs; I think it's just part of my personality. They're a lot of fun to play.
you know people, i dont get it. why everyone post videos with a lot (lot lot) of mistakes. i think, theyre technique is worth just a crap, because if you can play good you will shoot another video without any mistakes, but if you cant play, youll post very shitty playing
Actually, unless you have small hands, Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C# Minor is only slightly above average difficulty IMO. It's among Rachmaninoff's easiest pieces, and it's certainly not even as close to as hard as most Ravel, Chopin, Debussy, etc. It's very easy on the player's hands save for the four times you need to play a melodic tenth interval (A down to F#) during the middle passage. Only the last 12 or so measures of the second passage are actually challenging.
I know, I do sometimes too. When I do it, it feels natural to rush making it feel more intense but when I listen to it done, it sounds unmusical and tense.
thats was RACHMANNINOVS interpretation. we as musicians need to learn to find our own interpretaations (thats one of the beautys of music!!) and not be so hung on to what the composer himself did. find your own music inside you!!!
It was his damn piece. If you have the composer playing it then that is how it is supposed to be played. If you make your own song do whatever you want.
Why be so critical? Some people play the way they FEEL the music should be played to love it. Playing "technically correct" is for some stiff ass judge at some lame musical institution that can't see past the technicality to actually ENJOY the music.
i agree with 3020755433, music is just boring when not enough emotion is put into a song, otherwise it is just keys being pushed and people don't enjoy that as much, even if it is technically played well. there i said it :O
To say it in a more technical way, when you play it with emotion, you'll change the strength of playing, pedal, even with speed adjusting (accel. & rall.), tempo changing, all naturally, by your emotion/soul. Well thats what I came out with...as the play will sound different, not only look different. Still, depends on audience.
A little background info on this piece if you didn't know it: Rachmaninoff came to resent this piece because he was asked to play it so often. He eventually came to the point where he didn't even pay attention to it. He also has many interpretations of the speeds of each different parts, which I've heard myself.
You played this pretty well but the middle part seemed pretty sloppy. Good to see another younger person play this piece!
well done!

I can't believe how a demanding piece like this can be played in such a casual surrounding! fantastic talent, congratulations

Great! Now, go for the Op.32 No. 10. It's such a beautiful Prélude!
Keep it up!

EXTREMELY hard song to play, great work... just work on the feeling, you should really exagerate the movement of your hands and the volume should rise a LOT
gary900 3 years ago
Good performance. I think you played some wrong notes but it's difficult to know because the sound of the recording was shity.
sorry for my bad english

I really love how you played this one elenawen! Used lots of expression in the right parts! I thought the dog was pretty cool just wandering in hahaha. You seemed to be a little uncomfortable, is your seat a little too high for you? The piano sounds really good as the other people have said!
Gareth225 3 years ago
I loved it, but I think it's a shame you had such loud background noise, a hoover, the dog. Bit unfair while you were recording.

If you read up on the composers. A lot of them had a deep connection with their religious faith. I dont see how this girl's is any different from that.

i was jus gonna say shes such a cutie but the fact that she loves jesus (check her profile) just turns me completely off

Should it matter whether one loves Jesus or not? Musicians are musicians? It's all music?

You did an amazing job with this song!
So much emotion!
I just started playing it, and already I am hooked.
How long have you been playing?
Lonewolf22334 3 years ago
i know what you mean, when i started playing this 2 year ago, it was very hard for me, even tho my hands are pretty big ( i was 12 ), and my teacher said " comn lets stop this " i was like " no!" and after a year, when i finished it i played it in a big concert :D was great :)

I've been playing for about 13 years :)

I like playing this song because it's so dramatic...I prefer the "big boomy" songs; I think it's just part of my personality. They're a lot of fun to play.

well done! The middle section is perfectly good, for an interpretation with a dog in a background and a laundry machine (?)...

I like the emotion you play this song with. The pauses you incorporate make it your own. Keep playing!
Feelingthevibegrls 3 years ago
you know people, i dont get it. why everyone post videos with a lot (lot lot) of mistakes. i think, theyre technique is worth just a crap, because if you can play good you will shoot another video without any mistakes, but if you cant play, youll post very shitty playing
ablablei131 3 years ago
Good job! Were did you get the sheet music? If you did.. I love this song, and since I play piano, wanted to learn it. Thanks alot.

Very good, this is one of the more harder peices in piano repetoire, and you can play it!
Kalen1457 3 years ago
Actually, unless you have small hands, Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C# Minor is only slightly above average difficulty IMO. It's among Rachmaninoff's easiest pieces, and it's certainly not even as close to as hard as most Ravel, Chopin, Debussy, etc. It's very easy on the player's hands save for the four times you need to play a melodic tenth interval (A down to F#) during the middle passage. Only the last 12 or so measures of the second passage are actually challenging.

You're right, but most pianist like to rush it there, Rachmaninoff himself included!
voolare 3 years ago
I know, I do sometimes too. When I do it, it feels natural to rush making it feel more intense but when I listen to it done, it sounds unmusical and tense.
darrenvile 3 years ago
dont it if it hurts the music in any way or if it hurts you in any way!
klavierspielerin83 2 years ago
thats was RACHMANNINOVS interpretation. we as musicians need to learn to find our own interpretaations (thats one of the beautys of music!!) and not be so hung on to what the composer himself did. find your own music inside you!!!
klavierspielerin83 2 years ago
It was his damn piece. If you have the composer playing it then that is how it is supposed to be played. If you make your own song do whatever you want.

Why be so critical? Some people play the way they FEEL the music should be played to love it. Playing "technically correct" is for some stiff ass judge at some lame musical institution that can't see past the technicality to actually ENJOY the music.
spwvu 3 years ago
put more emotion into it. it is just keys being pushed.
3020755433 3 years ago
Perhaps you should pay more attention to the music...
rjeffrey743 3 years ago
i agree with 3020755433, music is just boring when not enough emotion is put into a song, otherwise it is just keys being pushed and people don't enjoy that as much, even if it is technically played well. there i said it :O

To say it in a more technical way, when you play it with emotion, you'll change the strength of playing, pedal, even with speed adjusting (accel. & rall.), tempo changing, all naturally, by your emotion/soul. Well thats what I came out with...as the play will sound different, not only look different. Still, depends on audience.

grunbaum87 4 years ago
A little background info on this piece if you didn't know it: Rachmaninoff came to resent this piece because he was asked to play it so often. He eventually came to the point where he didn't even pay attention to it. He also has many interpretations of the speeds of each different parts, which I've heard myself.
You played this pretty well but the middle part seemed pretty sloppy. Good to see another younger person play this piece!
