Snowmobiles, however, skip water quite reliably, and people will actually risk deeper water for the sake of maneuvering versatility.

What matters is the much faster BACKWARDS speed of the track or wheel, and how efficient the "paddling" is -- i.e., it' s that jet's pressure that pushes the vehicle up. I think it's important to understand that this whole water-skipping business has more in common with a nose-up jet ski maneuver than with water skiing or wakeboarding.
