Dude, that's so awesome!! I love it. How much does that damn thing (& associated plumbing/compressor) weigh? It's a beautiful brass horn, historic, & obscenely loud. Is it a crime to set it off occasionally? People w/money wish they could think of that. Not to mention having the technical abilities to plumb it, & make it work. Good On Ya :-).
Awesome! I love the sound of this horn! It's deep and strong, but still has a lot of mid and upper harmonics. New horns can't compare to these old ones. They are like tinny buzzers, that might have a low pitch, but no boom, at all! Thanks for sharing this. I can understand how you love horns.
The DD416 marking could mean it was meant for or at one time installed on the USS Walke, also known as the DD-416. That Destroyer was sunk during WW2.
We blew the 6-B at some idiot hecklers who were up in the woods at nighttime, in Altoona. I had Adam back his truck up so the horn was facing in their direction and Adam then let loose the 6-B on 150+ PSI. Needless to say the hecklers left in a hurry!! Later they came by and apologized and wanted to see what we blew at them. This big Doran 6-B is the most powerful air horn I ever heard. You have to be there to believe it!
I watched all your videos of this horn and someothers, it just sounds the best ! As it seems too hard to find, horn collectors may want replicas. Does making one require casting brass or can it be built from machined and welded parts only ? Could you provide diagrams and close-up pictures of internal parts ? Anyway, thanks again for the awesome sound !
This horn would be considered very hard to find or near impossible to find. The reason ? 12" diaphragm horns are usually special ordered. The company that made this horn no longer manufatures it(since the 1940's)Simply put, there is no "go to" place to buy a large bronze ship horn. You need to search aggressively because those of us horn collectors have exhaustively searched what sources are available online, it will take a source at a ship scrap yard to search & score one of these large horns.
An added note, the Doran-Cunningham 6-B is very, very rare. There are only 3 of these that are being used that I know of. Mine, Adam's (Airraidsiren on YouTube), and the MV COHO Ferry. It's so rare that only six have been seen in pictures and each one had a different configuration.
haha Yes boy! Very Nice and clean Ship Horn!! And you are Full equip =P I don't know where you find horn like that but aaaaaa...i would like to have some! it's a jewel! =D
Awesome :)
