I remember the entire home side of the stadium gasping in dismay if someone was out of step.
We always stayed after the games to see if Mr. Smith would say "The Band of Bands" or if he'd say "good night' or "see you Monday" we didn't want to hear the last two.
Mr. Smith was the greatest. He designed every one of these mathematically precise drills, and he deserves credit for bringing to Vidor something that was and is a source of great pride and distinction. He taught me discipline, self-respect, confidence, dignity and pride. With all due respect to Mr. Touchstone, which is great, this will always be the Charles R. Smith Band of Bands. David E. Moore, Class of 1984.
Thanks for posting! I was lucky to have been in the Vidor High School band under the Smith's from '86 to '90...Mr. Smith was an incredible man and teacher...I still get chills when I hear Slavonic played (the song at the end of the performance for those who don't know)!!!
I know exactly what you mean. This year ('78) was my first year in this wonderful band. I was a drummer but didn't yet march but was in the stands for this show. Like you, I still get the goosebumps whenever I hear Slavonic :D
Look at those straight lines! You don't see lines that straight even in some college bands. I think this was the drill we did when we marched in the Astrodome.
wooo!! im in the Vidor High School band now and i LOOOOOVE watching all these old drills. it's funny sometimes to hear the same music or see the same drill that i have done or am working on currently. thanks so much!! :]
This was the drill we did in 1985...I was drum major. I sure have enjoyed looking at these videos. Thanks rocketfan. It's great to see the early years! CR Smith was truly a great director.
No wonder everyone remembers the band filling the whole field...It's not that there were more of them at the time, it's just Mr. Smith liked to spread them out so it looked that way!
this was pretty cool. the drills that Touchstone "writes" are very lame in comparison. It's no wonder that Smith won awards and Touchstone hasn't

What a great band!. I was a 1980 TJ graduate, so I would have seen this drill live. I always had great admiration for the Vidor band.

Is this like military marching stuff...?

Yes this is the military marching style. Vidor still marches military today.

If it's '78 it was and instead of the long rolloff at the endzone we stopped and played for the Brigs.

Then you haven't seen or heard of Allen High School. I think they're near the Dallas area and they field probably around 500-600 students.

growing up in south texas I always had the same impression...looks like the band used to cover the whole field.
