My god, sometimes my heart just breaks because its so beautiful, everything about it, the air, the style, the talent, I know enough not to romanticize about the past times, but honestly, compared to today, everything just goes to the trash, no one even remotely tries to make something this spectacular and lovely. And it wouldn't hurt to actually make stars dress better in films, I mean, my god, i loved their fashion, those dresses were gorgeous
@moonlightorchid99 I completely agree with you. Everything seems to be so perfect, they thought of everything. I too prefer older movies because of the fantastic skills of the actors and nobody gets more perfect than Gene Kelly... Now a lot of the movies feels like they haven´t been rehearsed at all and lack the last touch both in acting skills, dresses and stories. The only actor who can reach the style of the classic Hollywood stars is Hugh Jackman...
@calanais06 I know! I'm so glad someone understands, honestly, I think fashion plays an incredibly big part that almost goes unnoticed, in a natural sense, because its so sophisticated, but we still notice them in the fact that we just admire it greatly. Back then, everything was about beauty, which may sound materialistic, but its a part of making a wonderful production and it shows that they put effort into every little thing. The fashion is impeccably wonderful, everything is, like, shiny.
@GarethWonfor I have seen him do the skate tap dance to "I Like Myself" so many times that I can just listen to the song and hear his tap sequences in verbatim. If I had had the guts, I would have strapped on a pair of skates and tried to learn a couple combinations on skates in the past, but I am sure I would have broken many bones.
Well, I miss the movies and musical genius of Old Hollywood, but the ugly truth is that back then women were treated like chattel and far worse--even major talents like the beautiful Rita--by men who were absolutely NOT gentlemen behind the scenes. Her offscreen life (like Garland's, like Monroe's) was a sad tragedy.
what happened to todays world!?!? so much garbage!!! I miss the the old days!!! dancing and singing and theater and musicals and handsome gentleman! and beautiful woman!!!!
I agree, there is a lot of garbage out there today.
We need a big change to come!
And soon!
I'm not sure I can take it anymore, to be part of this generation. It's so disrespectful and crude. And no one knows how to put on a true show anymore. It's not even about the music, dancing, or even acting anymore. It's just about how good looking you are and how dirty you can get. Disgusting.
SAME HERE! I'm often ashamed of my generation. There's no way we could ever compete with the "Greatest Generation, " aka those from the Depression/WWII era. As for us, take a look at the most popular music...no class...ugh.
I'll take the elegance that Gene and Rita exemplified anyday!
The garbage out there these days is part of the reason why I am a big fan of older films and seem to enjoy older films than newer ones. It's hard to find films that are decent and not trashy. I wish Gene Kelly was still around. :(
@RottenBrains71 you are so correct!! i was born in the 80's but films like these are my absolute favorite. Absolutely gorgeous people, great music, and i love watching how these super talented people dance. :)
Hayworth was on stage by the age of six as a member of The Dancing Cansinos, a famous family of Andalusian flamenco dancers working in vaudeville. In fact, Hayworth's uncle taught Kelly the pasa doble in the early 1930's. In addition to some use in this Cover Girl number, Kelly later employed the pasa doble and flamenco to woo Kathryn Grayson to stunning effect in Anchors Aweigh.
Gene Kelly's movies are great, because cinematography has evolved, but the purpose of film is still to bring a sensational stage show to a worldwide audience. song, dance, and acting all wrapped into one. true performance art! Definitely not Saw4 if you know what I mean.
I grew up in the 1970s but I delighted in the old movies and entertainers too and was for the most part disinterested in the things of my era. What are your five favorite films? Check out Dennis Morgan " You Darlin" on You Tube.
This is easily my favorite Rita movie. Cyd Charisse was technically more proficient and Gene's best partner all-around. But Rita was actually probably the best match for Gene stylistically - she shared his bright, bold, physical approach. I wish they hadn't worked for competing studios (Gene was loaned out to Columbia for this 'Cover Girl' before he became one of their "names". Ironically, it made him one). I think they would have been an even greater team if they'd worked together more often.
@chfalcao you know, not every star back than were triple threats. infact some of the greatest actors of all time only acted. look at john wayne, boggie, katherine hepbourn, spencer tracey, henry fonda, james dean, montgomery clfit, brando (with one exception), william holden, kim novak, burton, taylor, oliveir, bette davis, carey grant. but i agree with you about the ones before now are true stars.
saw this film as a kid ;some images are hard to lose even over a fairly great space of time.this is one..musicals went out of favour, mine too ...happening upon tis clip makes me want to see all those great shows one more time.
love Gene
