This is very true...the brake always overrides the engine. I used to work at an Auto auction, and some of our vehicles would not stay running without having our foot on the gas peddle. So we had to have our feet both on the gas peddle and the brake to keep the car's engine running while it charged the battery and keep the car from going out of control. This all happened while driving an old clunker at 15-25 kms an hour.
Go to the NTSB website and look up the most popular USA trucks and notice they have recalls upon recalls for total hydraulic and rotor and caliper failures!!
No thank you. Numbers don't lie, just Unions, Trial Lawyers and Congress.
But (in the California incident), the CHP officer stated that the brake lights were on and he could smell the brakes burning. He also stated that there was "braking material" on the road and on the wheels. How can you do this with the smart pedal/brake system?
the americans dont like the prius why?because it does 50mpg when crown victorias and f-150s does 10mpg in the city and hummers H2 5mpg if everybody have the prius i think the war in iraq is gonna be over if you are smart you now what i mean.
There is no "REAL NEUTRAL" on a Prius. "REAL NEUTRAL" is putting a mechanical level, linkage or cable into a detent on the transmission. Instead, going into Neutral in a Prius means making a switch contact that sends a signal to a computer to put the transmission into Neutral. If the Computer is malfunctioning, allowing the car to pick up speed, how can anyone be sure that the computer will not malfunction and allow the selection of Neutral AND how can you be sure the Brake over-ride will work?
Yeah it's true. A woman has testified to congress that she tried to shift into neutral. If there is a electronic error and the shifting is done electronically then you won't be able to shift to nuetral. Push and hold the start button is your only option.
there r recalls everyday from all manufacturers, this is only a big deal b/c a cali patrol man died. ppl r blowing out of proportion. use some common sense and stop following the media so closely
If Americans had to learn to drive stick shift (like the rest of the world) for their road test to get their license, I don't think this problem would be that big of a deal, even if you decide later on to get an auto.
Because learning stick is the only way to actually learn how a car works! Look at all the Americans who don't know how to do something as simple as shift into neutral.
I don't really know, but i sometimes think that this could be hoax by people who want their minutes of fame. Toyota has always made reliable cars, and there are gliches in all manufacturers. I really feel bad for them because they're taking all the heat while other manufacturers are calling back hundreds of thousands of vehicules (nissan, GM, ford, Hyundai, honda all recalled hundreds of thousands in the past month and nobody is paying attention)
Chunhaylee yea you have point. nobody has found any faulty ECU. But when steve wozniak Apple co founder say Toyota has ECU problem then I have to listen to Steve who know more about electronic then Toyota do.
@Nitrohog2006 Well, there is a speed limiter (max RPM from the electric motor / generators) built into the drivetrain. The max speed is somewhere around 106-109mph on the 2004-2009 NHW20 Prius.
I've seen posts from people trying it, and apparently it is about 107mph where the Prius will stop accelerating.
(BTW: Classic (2001-2003 NHW11) Prius is about 101-103mph, due to a slightly lower RPM limit.)
The 2010 Prius (ZVW30 model) can do 115 flat out. I have video proof on here. (:
Toyota does NOT want to admit that the problem is electrical or electronic. It would likely result in the company having to recall quite nearly every vehicle they have made in the last 5-10 years, hull their reputation, and bankrupt the company out of hand to fix it.
Well they should say that the Prius which supposedly lost control on the highway was of the previous generation which may not have this gas-override system. However it does have a neutral position on the gear shifter so the story looks like another hoax. The guy should be questioned for speeding.
Where is this dealer located? Someone needs to send this video to the local police so this Homo can get a ticket for speeding and endangering public saftey.
Why the fuck are people bitching about possible law violations...who the fuck cares?

How come you have to hold the shift lever n the neutral position? Does it not stay there on its own?
chunhaylee 2 years ago
how stupid do people have to be to die from that? it'd accelerate maybe 1-2mph more before you can hit it into neutral.. SO EASY
