I honestly regard this man as one of my biggest idols, and only until recently. He completely understands the concept of music and denies "genre". He makes things that connect to you in the most intricate, yet raw way. It's like everything you wanted that you didn't even know you did. His music can be listened to by anyone of any age/background/economic class and still be deeply appreciated. Its mostly up to the person to take the time to listen to it.
drugs or not.....Devin is a music god and his style in unheard of and no one can match him. Im a huge fan of SYL but his new stuff is epic and haunting i guess i whould say??!!? lol
I can't believe anyone would say he should go back on drugs. I am so glad for him that he is sober now. And this is not tame. This song is wild all in its own way, and calm like a dream at the same time ~ perfect for meditation. There is such passion in this song, that I would say this is the Real Dev. Great job, Devin!
The first time I heard Terria years ago, I connected to something in Devs sound. His songs have changed the way I appreciate music. Im a huge fan with every one of his albums and then some. Ki is the perfect album at this point in his evolution. Serious, yet relaxed. Honest, mature, collected, confident, clear. Like a dream that you wake up from and feel almost that it connected the things youve been working on so long to progress to the next stage of your being. Thanks Devin for the therapy.
In regard to the comment that the album is "un-Dev", I would have to disagree. Having met Dev on several occasions it is clear to me that the ear-bleeding SYL stuff was rather forced for him to perform )although he did an immaculate job) and stuff like this was more what his personality is really about. As for the music not being as heavy, just keep listening. You'll be surprised how, after listening more, it is very heavy. Just heavy in a different way.
@craveman58: I think the "SYL" stuff probably represented him better until Ocean Machine came out and he apparently became aware of the whole bipolar disorder thing. Suffice it to say that everything after that represents a happier, healther Devin Townsend, even the later SYL stuff.
This song is so beautiful, it's simultaeniously simple and complex. The feeling it gives me is of missing my boyfriend but being at peace with everything at the same time.
Yeah im looking forward to Deconstruction also but i think Addicted will be interesting.
To back up why i think this is the best song imo is the song like (serious)structure..there are a couple more like Winter and Terminal but this album has as much appeal to me as infinity...not much, remember ants?wtf?lol
Terria,ocean machine mmm serious dev
Thats my opinion anyway. Please dont care too much :D
great song, probably my favourite off ther new album. I find its gonna take time to get used to the new album :( I find alot of the songs sound the same..
But its Dev nontheless and I am happy to add Ki to my playlist.
Now I'm looking forward to 'Deconstruction'. Its apparently suppose to be Dev's heaviest album yet
i know what you mean, especially gato was very undev imo, coast is great, and terminal too, but overall, like ki and most other songs didnt have a dev feel to them really, or just a really different devness. but i really cant wait for the rest, and i still respect this album though for what it is
As Devin had mentioned, when he got off drugs, he kinda forgot how to write music again. i think through his new-found sobriety, he found a different musical branch he needed to explore and that is what Ki is. its an exploration of that new part of him he has connected with
He's also mentioned that, really, he was "done" with SYL 2 albums before he broke them up. His musical direction had started changing, but he had a contract to fulfill, so he turned to drugs (moreso) to keep the young man anger that had fueled SYL.
No offence as I'm a big Devin fan, but this is also Muse-esque.
That is intended as a compliment, I enjoy this as much as his most brutal stuff.
Seeing him live last month was a treat. Great show.

Devin needs to get back on drugs. This stuff is really tame by comparison of his other works. Ambient music?? Ugh. Still new Devin though.
