No problems with the quality. This is ace. Bill's homegrown effort was one of the earliest video promos. It cost Bill 500 quid which was a lot in those days. Still far more innovative than most of the tripe you get these days. The fact this made only #51 in the UK is a sad indictment of the record buying public at the time.
genius. unutterably, unequivocaly so far ahead of his times it hurts. this man invented post punk and gets fuck all credit in these BBC4 shit retrospectives.

For those of you who like this song, but aren't too familier with Bill Nelson's work, give the tracks "Banal" and "Living In My Limosine" a good few listens, and you'll prob then want to get his album "Quit Dreaming And Get On The Beam", which has all 3 tracks on. You won't be disappointed
The 'old man' mask used in the video looks a lot like the one Peter Gabriel used whilst performing sections of The Musical Box with Genesis in the early 70s.
come on- what a distant planet away this %$##% is from us now- and I mean that as pure as most of my compliments could possibly be- i feel as though i've opened a time-capsule from a distant galaxy- so this is perfect...
sorry friend both band and artist are quite different bills stuff is mostl avant garde/experimental and devo tend to be more commercial (try album "love that whirls" for a better idea of bills most commercial?) both are/were hugely underrated but i still love em both...btw i like far more of devos stuff. but eros arriving(bill) is one of my all time faves :)
This song has been stuck in my head for almost 25 years. It was always a mystery to me what it was. I was 11 or so when I heard it. I've tried searching for this title to no avail. I had no idea who the artist was but I knew it was somebody very original and eclectic. Thanks for posting this. Now I can discover more of Bill Nelson's work and from today this song can be stuck in my head for another 25 years but in a fresher and informed sort of way.
i have bin in this house wher the vidio was coz my mayts antie jakcs ons it and she is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo fun and well better than my mayts anty kathrin!!!!
Yes, this video was indeed used in the Max Headroom series back in the eighties. If you like this, check out "It Hurts" by the Lotus Eaters (available on Youtube) which was also featured in the same programme. All classy surrealistic stuff!
I have the whole Max Headroom series on VHS somewhere. I must dig it out. It was a bit surreal. Like the Sting interview. Max gives him a gift. A pair of golf shoes. Sting hates golf.....
I believe that Bill made this video himself (and very cheaply) because he didn't have the backing of a major record label after the breakup of Be Bop & Red Noise. The story that I heard at the time was that the UK broadcast Trade Unions then decided that they wouldn't "allow" it to be broadcast on UK TV because it was made with "non union labour". Wow, it just shows how the world has moved on with Youtube, My Space etc.
i agree dagebu.. he was way aheadof time..red noise was a classic..durastic plastic..should have been one of the all time great albums, billnelson is a geinus..
This one haunted me for 22 years until it turned up here. It's stood the test of time I think. Unfortunately the bit that haunted me most is the keyboardist's hand gesture that just happens to be at the moment when some idiot TV person decided to cut to the people in the junk yard.
True experimentation. Love that avante-garde feel. I never knew this was on Max Headroom. What an exciting period all round. This video reminds me of Texas Chainsaw Massacre which I saw at the same time. Those masks give me the freaks even now. Especially the sax player's dance. And now I'm 14 again... Thanks dagooch
The sax player was Bill's brother Ian who sadly died in 2006 on his 50th birthday. You can find more details in Bill's journal on his website bill nelson dot com.
I always loved Bill Nelson. he opened my car door by mistake when he came out of a Pie Shop in Blackheath...he thought it was his Triumph Dolomite..but it was mine. Had he taken my car and I taken his..wow...we are really exploring a parrallell universe. As it happens he just said "sorry" and I continued with my life as a tyre-fitter.
agreed i have some of those max shows there worth having just another strange video from the max headroom show was a woman singing about rats and a guy singing about germans
Oh Yes! 'Rats on a stick' wasn't it? Looked like Tonie Basil on speed bouncing around in her short skirt lol. Udo Lindenburg - Germans. Does anybody remember that AWFULL song by Jessie Rae? Some muppet in a kilt on the top of a mountain swinging a sword around overhead being filmed from a helicopter who kept flying around in circles? By the sea or to the sea i think was the title.
