Jonny Depp has said he based the character on dogs he's had. How they talk with their eyes. Or how you can scold them yet they come back like nothing ever happened. But overall he referred to it as "a universal theme. Feelings of not fitting in, not being able to touch something without it crumbling". My daughter cried at the end of the film and said "I know what you mean now about how it can be hard to be unique". She's seven and it broke my heart. I wish I could see her. That too is very sad.
