  • Great song, awful performance.

The vowels were disgusting, the consonants weren't out there enough, and the Rs sucked terribly. How much time did the choir spend on developing this song?

Most of the Ts weren't lined up, the Ss were off, and I could hear a LOT of people missing entrances.

The soloist was great. A few spots here and there weren't the best, mostly because it seemed like you were straining your voice a bit... The vibrato kept me away from liking it as much as I should.

    Contest? A 3.

  • The soloist was gorgeous. Great job man!

  • the vibrato!! :(

  • Aquí durmió Cantaclaro. Great Job!!

  • This was an amazing performance - the soloist had a voice like butter, even if it was the tiniest bit for the first few notes. Altos could have said the 'cha's better, they sounded very ... off. Not terrible, but it's easy to nitpick when the choir does this well! Also, I know the piece very well as my madrigal choir is working on it right now. I just wish my conductor would open up the solo to women, as I love it and we don't have any men I think are right for it in any way.

  • Buena interpretación pero muy lenta para su verdadero tiempo, género y estilo.... Felicitaciones

  • One of the bests on youtube...

A bit slow, but still Great...!!!

  • Beatiful :)

    I haven't heard this since I was a baby.

    I love this song.

  • Absolutely amazing version! It sounds so intimidating (though I guess the sheer number of singers has a hand in that). All in all, really great performance!

  • the name is wrong lol

  • Thank you....I have never noticed that I put the wrong name in the title....I did put the right title though in the description box....Must have just been a typo....Oh well, I fixed it now.

  • too slowly........ not like it.... its faster you can find here some other matadelanima sola from chorus of venezuela and its good

  • Most enjoyable performance. Soloist has a beautiful voice. The obvious difficulty of this fabulous piece and the length of time it took me to find a good performance on youtube has convinced me not to do this with my choir.

  • The "joropo" section should indeed be faster, but nobody is obbligated to know the vernacular elements of music from the Venezuelan llanos (flatlands). The same thing happens when a chorus from Latin America sings, say, Negro Spirituals, or Blues.

  • I sang this piece under the composer, Maestro Antonio Estévez, one of Venezuela's most celebrated composers and conductors. T I have also conducted it in numerous occasions. The piece was dedicated to the Orfeon Universitario of UCV, founded by Estevez in 1943. The tenor's voice in this version is beautiful, and it is a very good effort from the chorus.

  • This is the best version of Mata del Anima Sola, i have found in youtube, so far,CONGRATULATIONS!!!.. The soloist was very good, excellent pronunciacion, i hope your confidence is groing and not get too nervious, that is good energy.. I think is a good job doing music which you (soloist and choir) are not use to.I can recomend you guys.

  • the tempo in the joropo get littler mor fast, actually the choir is imitating the sound of "arpa, cuatro y maracas" and is not way play that instruments sooo slow, when is too slow no make sense the joropo "la noche" that is the correct tempo the lirics are talking abouth the night is tired. I think most of the choires make the same mistake because they dont know what the song is talking about is necessary a little research, please! For the solo part,is correct sing "legato" in the beggining part

  • (mata del anima sola boqueron de banco largo ya podras decir ahora aqui durmio Cantaclaro)... the second part : con el silvo y la picada de la brisa coleadora... ( because should be faster) is more sharp the rythm, more articulate..And the solo always is a man, because the lirycs, is for a MAN( i undertand if a women choir, not choice!) the juioooo. is like wind sound, is fast and "diminueto" , And the plin.. is like hiting a string of the cuatro or arp..

  • is more nnnnn and sharp. This song is not romantic.. the anima sola is and spirit which is arrant.. a leyend, and the soloist is Cantaclaro who is telling avery body he sleep there in the mata del anima sola. and also he is telling the afternoon going to night very quite.. and the choir is talking about the night ( describing it) the words pasma y fantasma= phantom the acents should be more scary and faster.. The song is to being sing with nerve.. sharp. Thanks

  • what school was the soloist from?

  • Sorry, but when you post your videos on youtube, expect people to talk about it, especially if there IS something wrong with it. There were many great things about this video though. I have been searching for a good performance of this for about 30 mins now, and this is one of the better ones.

  • Um, that's me singing the solo. I don't like explaining my singing to rude people, but some of you were very kind and considerate on your comments. I was really nervous - I was one of the youngest people in the choir and I had a day to learn the solo. People commenting on this are so rude. Would you like it if people tore your singing and self-esteem to shreds. It'd be REALLY easy, too. Just a few words, a click, and BAM! Instant rudeness. Watch what you say!

  • Yup, Please people. Be kind with your comments. On a personal note. Alex, I thought you did splendid when you did that solo, and I can't wait to see what you do with you vocal career. Especially since you were a sophomore here. And I think your a senior now. Wow, Time flies. lol

  • zomfguitar, the tempo is not suposed to be a "jumpy spanish song" if you're singing it like this in your choir then you're doing it wrong and probably have the rythym wrong as well, venezuelan music should be researched and learned about before being attempted, specially a piece like "mata del Anima Sola" by the master Antonio Estévez

this version is a bit too slow in the joropo, also, too much vibrato in the solo, this should be a lot faster and less squared

  • The first thing for the soloist try to be less nasal! Try to follow the rhythms! You're a bit nasal on the sola and por que ron! The ahora could be rounder. But the rest is fine! Don't get so nervous! It adds tension to the song! The choir blends well with the soloist.

  • I like that. Once again the soloist is too nervous. I love the crescendo on the plin! It's cool. Careful on the la, a bit nasal. Sobre, pronounce the R's. Try to be cleaner and crisp. It's a bit too aggresive on the pasma, altos, basses, tenors, w.e. Also the tu on tu corazon was not in together. The end of the first part back to the soloist, is too nasal and slow. Also this version is SATB(Soprano Alto Tenor Bass)

  • The soloist good voice, but the version in general is not correct. More Fast please.

The most of version in Youtube of this piece are equal in this problem with the "tempo".

  • Soloist did a good job! However i would have liked for him to cut down on the vibratto and give it more umph! it should be as though he is calling across the plains! Tempo was to slow! The La noche part was at the perfect speed but you should be slowing down to the tempo at that part not speeding up! Overall Good job! but then again there are lots of god choirs out there!

  • Man, you guys sang it REALLY slow...or at least the "la ran lan's"...and then the La noche part too, but other than that, it was amazazing!

  • in the score toward the end at measure 42, does anyone know what B.C. stand for/mean?

i hear the choir humming in this recording, but i just want to double check.

  • yes the bc is for humming

  • @jose229922 BC means boca cusa or something, but it means closed mouth, in other words, humming.

  • i wish our chorus was allowed to have music at the concert!

  • this tempo blooooooooooows

  • dude the tempo is supposed to be like that

its supposed to be like a jumpy spanish song

i singing it in school with my choir

we already sang it infront school board people

its supposed to have that rythm

  • I LOVE the song.

My choir is singing it for contest, but its only a girls piece.

    And im from SouthWest Oklahoma.

    Elk City.

    :)

    Great solo and song.

  • Im from NE....lol Complete Opposite

  • i just sang this for my chorus concert it was one of my favorites!!!

  • Too slow!

  • flat basses. :(

great tenors and soloist though. i love the dynamics and the tempo you guys used!

  • THE TEMPO STINKS!

but you guys do sound great.

  • Nice soloist, he sounds good, but there's not a lot of energy in his voice. Then again, he's in front of a pretty large audience. =)

The "la noche"/slow part is a little shaky, like people are starting and ending their constonants at different times, but the "pilin plin"/"la ran lan" part is really precise and better than my choir has been doing =P

I love this song, y'all did it verrrry nicely!

  • Me gusta mucho la exacta pronunciacion que tiene el solista. Felicidades Alex!

  • cant hear the altos... good tho

  • beautiful. we are singing this song in the honors choir at my school.

  • the time is fine, the soloist must be nervous, way too much vibrato (this is obviously a reference, he's still a great singer.), great job though ;D

    ps. he goes flat... =/

  • and by the way the soloist's name is alex...

  • I know, I was there, lol

  • I was in this choir and anyone who has a problem with the tempo take it up with the arranger because that was the time it was written in! So if you dont like it get over it.

  • although it was slow, the soloist was great. good timing too, none of the parts were overpowering.

  • This was a really good performance of this song. My choir just recently performed it.

  • i performed this song at the Heritage Festivals in Virgina....we got first place gold. and our soloist? got first place as well. just saying....anyway this would've been better had it been done WITHOUT MUSIC! and if u guys werent statues and actually moved. its not that hard to memorize....

  • amazing soloist were performing this song on tuesday at hilton high school...

  • I love it!, it is the right tempo for foreign speaking and classical choirs, I have heard this piece at least 5 times and this was great!

  • What? No it's not! It's far too slow. What spanish ensemble do you know that plays this slowly? The music is that of something like a Venezuelan folk band or something. Much too slow.

  • beautiful soloist!

  • This performance was very very slow¡¡¡¡. i think it could have more fast. This song it´s from Venezuela by Antonio Estévez, Inspired by a poem of Alberto Arvelo Torrealba and the voices of the choral imitade the "cuatro, arpa y maracas" nationals instruments from this country. The Orfeon Universitario de la UCV performed the same piece very good

  • totally agree

  • Yea... i think it's a little slow. I think the best thing for you guys to do though is to relax and physically feel the beat.... This song isn't made to be sung standing still... (yea i know it's not the "formal" way to sing but it really makes a difference!!!)

  • i agree it was a little slow. i think it could have been a tad faster but much faster i agree it would have fallen apart

  • Okay first of all, lets consider the size of the ensemble performing this piece. Any faster and it would have fallen apart. I did this with 243 voices and we did NOT go this fast. The soloist sounds WONDERFUL for a high school singer. I think it's one of the better ones, actually...

  • This was his first year with our All-District Group, He was a Sophomore....Which Really Amazes me that his voice is so full and rich at that age....

  • Its pretty, but way too slow. Its supposed to be a percussive song. My chorus worked with the Schola Cantorum on this song and we did it much faster and with a lot more rythmic feeling. Good voices though!

  • Terrible!.. I'm from venezuela and it's a bad interpretation of this piece it's very different to the real and original interpretation! Please study about the composer, the style, the TEMPO is too slow, but not too slow, toooooo much slow! That's not the sound of a Venezuelan piece!.. SUENA MUY GRINGO!.. (N)

  • This song it´s from Venezuela by Antonio Estévez, Inspired by a poem of Alberto Arvelo Torrealba and the voices of the choral imitade the "cuatro, arpa y maracas" nationals instruments from this country.

  • YAY!!!! Finally someone knows what this song is about...I remember reading all the info on the music, however I had to give my music back to my teacher....

  • Oh dear God! This is terrible! The soloist is so forced and the tempo is too slow! Listen to the Iowa State Singers do this! It's too remarkable for words!

  • Oh dear God! This is terrible! The soloist is so forced and the tempo is too slow!

  • When I said Latin what I meant was that it didn't have that latin FEEL. And it's portuguese.

  • Its Spanish...Thats what the music says, It's imatating the type of instruments they have in Latin America, Or something to that affect...

  • Lol, I know...my bad, sorry about that. I still don't think they have the right sound. It sounds way too "pretty".

  • Its what one calls musical interpetation and opinion....It was a fun song to sing however... ^_^

  • Good job, it doesn't sound Latin enough though...but it still sounds good!

  • Its not Latin, its Spanish, very similar, but not the same ^_^

  • i'm actually singing this with my Women's Choir for competition this year, its a gorgeous song and i cannot wait to bring it to competition. good job, your soloist was good!

  • Great job!

  • I thought so
