  • Amateur hour BEWARE. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOUR XBOX 360!!! It wrecks and xbox and warps the board. It may work for a while but when it breaks again it's done for good. You need to reball it with better solder. Do not use Arctic Silver 5, too much cure time, use MX4. Before your Xbox breaks put on a TR-360 with MX-4. I thought everyone knew this by now.

  • Hey luke i repaired 3 xbox 360 using your method which all i used was the penny trick thanks to the guy who invented it lol and thanks for your easy explanation tutorial on the problems, my question is simple, i have one that was fixed for like 3 days i stopped playing it for like 3 days then i recently tried to play on it and it was again no video but sound on problem i cant do towel trick cause it wont overheat lol so now i ask does replacing those screws fix it? and if so or not what method

  • @AkabaneOtaku and if so or not what method would you recommend at this stage?*

  • Thanks for this video -- I just recently performed x-clamp replacement with arctic silver because I aquired an xbox that starts with sound but no video (was told it suffered from RROD and has been in storage for over a year). My fix didn't seem to help... still no video, and my fans sound like they're running hard. I used some neoprene washers and have the heatsink screws tightened pretty loosely, but to where they resist a bit. Any suggestions? I'll go play with the tension now...

  • I have this problem , Turn on my Xbox 360 on MOnitor ViewSonic "22", Firstly it's working well . Monitor resolution max 1680/1050 , Then i go to the Xbox DIsplay setings and change resolution to 1980/1600 , Then i go to the game , playing mby 5 min and my display turned off ( No digital signal ) , I try to holdyng Y + RT ( restart have but nothing ) plz HELP ME !

  • @1nsan3tranc3 did you try it on another monitor? it might be your monitor overheating if it is a plasma lcd tv. if it does it for any system then it would be your monitor if not then either a setting issue or your xbox not having enough preasure on the gpu.

  • if you was going to resolder it what would you need to solder

  • my 6 year old xbox finally has a problem lol

  • Thumbs up if the dislike bar is as big as Justin Biebers penis.

  • Hey I've been looking for a video to fix my xbox 360 for awhile now... it has full sound but no video... Im looking for the easiest way to fix it is this it?

  • Hello luke. i have a xbox that has sound but there is no video. would this work for this??

  • what the fuck does 5by10, is that fucking metric size or inch size. None of the Local hardware stores had this size Im talking about Home Depot, Rona, Tiger Direct... Like every fucking screw is measured in inches' so it would be fucking lovely if you can fucking give me a fucking inche size or answer my fucking question

  • @Here4IVIusic dude calm down bro . i believe it in mm 5mm by 10 mm and ya can get the kits off ebay cheap with all ya need in there.

  • what does the 5 by 10 mean in the screws im going to Home Depot to buy the screws and will the local hardware store have washers ?

  • Okay so i went to Home Depot and the 5x10 screws they had were like 3 times too big....

  • @sealteam06 really ? that sucks i was about to do this repair so your saying you bought the exact same screws as him or did you actually get a completely different screw, you know its probably the only problem, you should compare your screw to the videos.. but anyway my question. Does the xbox have to have the checkers because my buddies doesn't & its 4 rings

  • @Here4IVIusic I looked at the screws he tells you to get and they definitely wont fit in the holes.

  • Am i suppose to re attach the xclamp when i used the screws or leave it off all together?

  • Thanks Luke. Helped me get a 360 back. You could probably use a better look at how you actually did the screws though.

  • The Yen Trick LOL Luke you`re awesome!!

  • so the screws that look longer that you took out orginally, in that location were the 2 X's are ? and with the new screws you put them through from that side of the xbox from the X print ?... Im tryna help my buddy fix his xbox, but yea.. why do you need thermal paste for ?

  • duos the penny trick work with e73 Error

  • I did the penny fix, only helped to prevent the ring of death, then I did the towel trick and now it works, correct screw tensions are important, no need for towels in the towel trick, just stick 2 cotton swabs whith no cotton on the other end into the fans to block em and wait for it to cook (2 lights) let cool and done

  • hey do u have to heat it up like the other video's say to do????

  • There's so much wrong with these 360 repair videos all over YouTube it's insane.

  • I've spread arctic silver 5 on the gpu and cpu, gotten the proper screws and washers, tried tightening and loosening the screws at least 17 times, and STILL have RROD. I'm not getting a heatgun, using the towel trick, and dont plan on doing a 3rd attempt using the penny fix this is fucking bullshit.

  • this video deserves many more views it is one of the few (the only i have seen i assume there are at least a couple of others) that suggest to replace the screws, great idea! i wish i saw this before i bought myself an xbox 360 s :(

  • did you overheat your GPU to reflow the solder on the pins?

  • When you say this can fix the flashing red lights problem, you do mean "Red Ring Of Death" right? My nephew has RROD on his XBox 360. Just thought I'd try this for him.

  • How about ps3 noise repair whenever it happens in the future?

  • So you are the wizard of console fix? That's cool, it's a cool trait, not very often seen.

  • ok... did the heat gun... then did the screws like you did .. but now i am getting 0020. would it hurt to heatgun it with the sinks on? i have the case off.. and its just the mobo and dvd drive and sinks and front board... maybe heat up the ram chips and underside of the GPU and CPU? i want to put this back together because i just repainted the case matte olive green with matte black trim.. itching to reassemble

  • cheers luck it is awesome you can fix a machine that Microsoft cant lol they should contact you and hire to resolve there issues for good that would be awesome cheers bro huge thumbs up as always talk to you soon my eastern friend from the lad of the rising sun cheers bro talk to you soon cya

  • you kinda sound like master chief

  • the only problem i have with mine is the sound dont work, any ideas on how to fix that?

  • Pretty informative, dude.

  • Hell of a system for gaming, but too unreliable.I really believe if xbox 360 didn't have RROD and it's other issues...Ps3 would probably be dead right now or be in worst shape.

  • I bet your cock is huge.

Hope all is well brother fucker.

  • Hey Luke, I'd love to see you do a video on fixing YLOD on PS3. I'm sure you could explain and show in more detail then everyone elses vids.

  • Great video Luke, Oh and is that a iPhone 4 I see there ^? :)

  • Have you ever fixed a box with the Red Lights error 0020? I've tried the X clamp mod, the penny trick, everything. This son of a bitch just doesn't want to work! Any ideas? I can't find any info online.

  • @LastHour1 have u allowed the xbox to overheat by disconnecting the fan for 15 mins? let it cool for 15,after that remember to plug the adaptor and tv leads into the xbox or u still may have the rrd.

  • @jer6900 No...I tried the towel trick, but that didn't work. I'll try this next time I get a moment to play with it. Thanks!

  • @LastHour1 the towel trick is useless, did u apply thermal glue to the processing chips as well? i've fixed a few xbox's but usually applying the glue and then allowing to let the xbox overheat should fix the problem, don't be disheartened if it doesn't work first time you may have to do this a couple of times. But it has worked for me. Best of luck mate

  • I'm lucky I've had my 360 for about 2 years and it's still working fine (thank God).

  • Hey Luke, really glad you're posting these very clear tip videos. It's cool to see people going all DIY and getting their own stuff working again. Looking at the cooling they've got on their though, and how it's mounted, is it really any surprise that they fail? You put a device down with uneven pressure on the board and then add heating and cooling to expand and contract the material and you have a perfect environment for a physical failure.

  • You can do all the stuff luke said or just go and buy a PS3

  • @uofl2004 Point, this guy.

  • The reason Microsoft and all manufacturers now use lead free solder is for RoHS compliance. Its got nothing to do with saving money, it actually costs more to implement a lead free process. Its just legal mumbo jumbo nonsense.

  • @sparkybaz77 Have a look on RS Components, you can get leaded solder on there in the UK, not just old stock either.

  • It's time to buy 360 S! :)

  • Great video Luke! =D

  • You have so much skill fixing what seems to be, any problem with any electronic.

Can you literally buy any console "broke" (eg ebay) and fix it?

You should set up a business selling the consoles you've bought for peanuts after fixing them up.

  • another great repair tips video from sensei morse :)

  • Gahhh. Luke made this too late. :( I already sent mine to Microsoft.

  • @DualSilence It's his fault!!! Jk. Lol. Seriously sorry for your problems though. That sucks.

  • hey luke. i have been doing some repairs to a 360 as well. got it RROD'ed. now i get the message that its overheating. i did the screw fix to get rid of the x-clamps (evil!) and i did the heat gun trick. but i used some washers (metal and nylon) to space the heat sinks. think that i should take some washers out?

  • Nice work Luke. Do the pegs cause it to overheat faster than it normally would? Hope all is well. Take care.

  • the rubbing Alcohol needs to be 90%+ when using on a motherboard of any kind, cause the less water/extra crap content the better, and it also dries much faster, and cleans the Thermal compound off much better. Also I just use some Antec 7706 compound it's cheap about $3 plus shipping, and the 3 packets can yield 6 jobs if your doing 2 jobs back to back, and cools as well or better then Arctic Silver5, also if ya need a brush Newegg carries Nanosilver compund from Rosewill for about $9

  • I did this with 3 xbox but they worked for about 1 month and stoped working again.

    Any ideas?

  • @Menace1979 - Reflow the solder on the GPU. Follow the procedure I told NecromaticSunshine to do, then apply the little tweaks I told NecromaticSunshine to perform.

  • @Ace9921 Need to buy a heatgun.

    Thanks Ace!

  • hey Luke Happy Labor Day..i don't know if ya'll celebrate it in Japan or not.

  • Lukemorse1 taught himself how to do all of this stuff, and that makes him a genius I tell you. A freaking Genius!

  • Awesome tips man!

  • i cookt my xbox in the oven for 15 min on 275°C

the xbox had E74 error and i did the x-clamp fix but dident work

so i just shove it in the oven

  • you should just go grab xbox 360 s, saves the hassle ive given up with the old model

  • @5:17 and I get it, but I kind of want one of those XBOX's you repaired...got a really bad ass PC motherboard...truthfully don't want to bother with shippng, at this particular moment

  • Haven't even started the vid (got it buffering) and I know Ebay is going to get all kinds of request's for RROD Xbox's, thanks to, let's say your "ingenuity"

  • Yet another informative and helpful video Luke. Keep it up.

  • what if you have the three red rings? how would you fix that?

  • I'm happy there's people out there that this works for. Did not have such luck with mine. Went with the new hardware and upgraded gpu heat sink which fixed the problem for about a total of 40hrs of run time. Then it took another dump. Good video man.

  • Great Video buddy thanks for the mention

  • I need to get a 360!

  • I bet Luke is the only one Who owns a 360 in Japan.

  • @sparkybaz77 I get leaded solder all the time at radio shack, it does work alot better then the unleaded stuff but its also more expensive which explains why Microsoft used the unleaded solder, cost cutting.

Ever see the towering inferno? The movie about the sky scraper that was built with corners cut everywhere, someone should update that movie and make it about the 360. So much cost cutting on that console.

  • The way I fixed this was just getting the new Xbox 360 S lol. I traded my old 360 during a special at gamestop and it ended up being a free upgrade for me lol.

  • I've done 2 now replacing the clamps with screws, and there are no worries!

  • im wondering if theres something else that may be of help to those consoles or maybe i just had badluck haha :P

  • @WickedClownNZ Microsoft decided to use lead free solder on these components which is junk and melts under high heat causing a lot of problems. Another thing to try is to use new solder on the parts and see if that helps bro :D

  • @lukemorse1 cheers man thats actually a really good idea. il grab the soldering iron out and give that a try for sure. :D

  • @lukemorse1

They were forced to use Lead free. For a appliance to be ROHS compliant they can not use leaded solder. Something to do with chinese warehouses using it hour after hour day in day out. Its okay if you solder every now and again but day in day out and you WILL get lead poisoning

  • @lukemorse1 Yeah lead free solder can be junk for some applications, but MS did this in order to pass new EPA Federal government regulations here in the states, trying to do away with lead based items, can't even go to the store, & buy a good old lead fishing weight anymore, here in the US at least. :-(

  • @lukemorse1 hey luke have you got any idea how to fix xbox 360 controllers? I seem to get the same problem with my controllers in which the right analogue stick stops functioning properly when i press up, it either stutters or doesn't work at all. keep up the great vids mate

  • Hey Luke, I gotta problem recently my 360 crash's with a checkerboard screen, is there a fix for this?

  • @NecromaticSunshine that is a problem with the gpu. that can be solved with this fix. that is the problem that this one had as well. Good luck man

  • @lukemorse1 Thanks Luke, your are my Hero <3

  • @lukemorse1 ok.. i have a question... how in the world does the screws have to do with anything?

  • @chas44cranky could be pressure on the board making it over heat.

  • @NecromaticSunshine - The solder's coming loose on the GPU. The ideal way to fix this is to pass a heat gun over the GPU, then add in the screws like Luke did. The best way I found to fix an Xbox 360 GPU is to make a cardboard spacer that will apply even pressure on the GPU(cut out some parts of the cardboard so there's no excess pressure on the 2 dies), place that spacer between the GPU and the heatsink, tighten the heatsink, and pass the heat gun for 1 minute 45 seconds at 450 degrees C.

  • @NecromaticSunshine - This flattens the solder on the GPU a little bit so it'll make a more solid connection with the motherboard. Then, you can replace the X-clamps with the screws just like Luke did. And don't forget: USE FLUX!

Another thing too would be to bump up the fan voltage to 12V. The fans in the Xbox 360 run at 5V, which is inadequate to keep the system cool. The only drawback to this is that the Xbox 360 will be EXTREMELY loud, but at least it'll keep cool.

  • @NecromaticSunshine - One more thing: while you're at it, cut the mesh in front of the fans. When the Xbox 360 is closed, this drastically reduces airflow. If you cut the mesh, the Xbox 360 will be able to pull out as much air as it does when you don't have the case on it. It would also be a good idea to extend the fan shroud(that white plastic piece over the heatsinks) so more air can be evacuated from the CPU and GPU heatsinks.

I've done all this to many Xbox 360s and they're still working

  • @Ace9921 Thanks for the info man. :)

  • hey luke

awesom video bro :) ive also done this fix on numerous 360s with a ton of success. but with the e74 on an hdmi model motherboard i just could not get this trick to fix it. so

  • Thanks for the repair tip, now if my Xbox 360 breaks I might be able to fix it.

  • hey luke my disk tray keeps getting stuck if i turn my xbox off without a game in it if i leave a game in it and turn it on the tray opens any idea why it does that

  • my bro has a 360 and just moved back ill tell him this

  • Any ideas for the E 74 error?

  • @71jbear a large number of those codes can be fixed with this man. Honestly I don't even pay attention to the codes anymore as I have found that 90% of the problems can be fixed with this.

  • cool

  • so wait

to fix the famous xbox issue

    is to use different screws

    what the hell

  • @CRAKIZGOOD well as we all know, the magic that powers the current generation of consoles is stored in the screws. The motherboard, DVD drive, and other cuircits are just filler.

  • Very informative.. Thanks Luke!!

  • ah some nice pointers there mister, the screwdriver does infact help
