wow I've never heard 80m even close to that quiet. At my QTH I'm very lucky to have a noise floor below a solid S5 andS7-S9 is a regular occurrence :(
Nice to see you recognising it for what it was, making the most of it and teasing us with the short vid.
The 80m antenna must be at least 1/4wl HIGH (60FT) and then can be made right S meter test....if you have your antenna on 60 ft the noise level be 100% more then S5!!
My 80m Extended Double Zepp is on 80ft...and the noise level in the winter time is about S 5-7
Trust me I did notice the lack of noise...It's yet another reason that I'm interested in picking up the rig. And I can assure - I wouldn't operate it on th eHam Freqs without my ham ticket.
Do you like your kenwood TS-480HX? Did you have to do any "mods" to get it to cover 11 meters. I'm studying for my tech license and want to get a radio soon. Looks like that one is a beauty...Please let me know if it covers 11 meters stock out of the box or if it needs any work!
Hi Mike, my videos are more about aerial performance and low noise locations. I do get asked many questions about the radios and not about the more important items: aerial & location. However in the spirit of amateur radio, in my opinion you will not go far wrong with a Kenwood TS-480 it will not cover 11M and would require a dealer mod. Make sure your licence permits its use in your country.
Hi, I have no experience with the FT-450AT, therefore I can only comment on the TS-480. The TS-480 has been a delight to use from day one. I always receive compliments on my TX mod and the recovered RX audio is superb from the built in speaker. My other favourite remote head HF rig is the FT-900AT, the nice thing about remote head rigs is that they become very useful for mobile/portable and base station use.

Fantastic! My receiver also has zero noise floor on 80, but that's because I have a dummy load as an antenna - Hi!

Hi Kev, It was approx 15:30 BST, the location was out in open country side, therefore no man made noise! The beauty of portable amateur radio!

Hello Carl,
What is this antenna you are using?
Are you living in open country side with extremely low noise level?
Here in paris city, the QRM threshold is not so low, as you can guess...

Hi Steph, my antenna is a home brew 26Ft loaded dipole resonant with a bandwidth of 70Khz, the station is a motor home, location open country.

Which is the better radio performance-wise, the Kenwood TS-480SAT or the Yaesu FT-450AT???

Hi, yes the TS-480 is a very nice transciever, but more importantly is the aerial and low noise location.
Thanks for your interest
