First time i've heard this Variant,

Although the Lyric's are the same the Anime's ending always varied in Pitch & Tone (probably due to different singers)

My favorate version is the one from the end of "Episode Six" (as it is the most Balanced one i've encounterd so far)

Shinji saw Rei for the last time after the third impact..I also believe that the asuka besides him is the Misato/Rei/asuka in one body...

@XDoomriderX For me, the original ending was the best ending, since it is more in spirit with the show. Some may disagree with this, but in my opinion, they're probably missing out on the main point of the series... additionally, there is a ray of light at the end of the tunnel in the 'original' ending, but be warned that End of Evangelion was called a cruel joke on the part of Anno to his fans for a reason!

@thegambitking Wrong. Really. Wrong. The End of Evangelion was planned from the beginning. If you take a look at episode 25, you can see the events of EoE being carried out. The reason the events of EoE were not carried out were fund cut, i.e they didn't have the cash. Saying it was a cruel joke of Anno is believing him a psychic.

I'm not going to criticise you're interpretation of it, and even though you're free to do that to me, at least read what I wrote carefully. I said that EoE was CALLED a 'cruel joke' for a reason, not that it WAS--there's a difference! I personally liked the original ending better, but now that I've watched both, I actually have quite a bit of respect for EoE as well and have gained something from it
