@mlps93 Because the 1984 treaty doesn't allow china to change everything until the 50 years period of allowing capitalism and self government in HK is up at midnight on June 30th 2047.

Come 2047 China will be free to change anything on HK - they might plan to join HK with Shenzhen as a full Shenzhen region and change region name instead of HK. I suspect China will get rid of everything British very slowly and may finish it off after 2047.

Actually, by handing Hong Kong over, the UK fulfilled the promise it made in 1898. When it acquired the final territories of Hong Kong in that year, the UK agreed with China that it would be a 99-year. The details of how the handover would occur didn't get finalized until 1984, but from the start, both sides knew that in 1997, Hong Kong would be returned to China.

The UK would've broken a promise if it granted Hong Kong independence.
