  • Why is it that most of the anime/hentai or whatever porn is usually always caucasian women. Mostly blonds with blue eyes? I wonder why that is. And i did not say all. i said most. Hajime Sorayama just saying one soft core stuff. The real extreme hardcore portrays like 90% white women. But i don't discuss that here.

    So what is it?

  • But wait, not only are most of the major actors white, all the 'evil' actors, like the guys form the fire nation, are all indian or middle eastern... not so subliminal message there...

  • I'm not putting money in Shyamalan's pockets for this crap.

He's ruining a great cartoon by removing the Asiatic people from the Asiatic environ that the creators of Avatar made.

Not only that, but if Shyamalan's wanted to do something great he could have broken Hollywood's sick tradition of outing ethic people in good roles by investing in the Asian and Inuit youth's talent.

  • man why do movie studios r should the people. eff u really good shows?

m night? u've got to be kidding...

  • What I can't believe is that on the ACTUAL casting call for the main characters, it says on the casting call sheet under race: "Caucasian or any other ethnicity." This means that they were DELIBERATELY looking for white actors to play the leads. If they didn't care what ethnicity the leads were, the sheet would have read: "any ethnicity." COMPLETE. UTTER. BLATANT. RACISM. I'll not stand for it.

  • I can't believe that on the ACTUAL CASTING CALL SHEET for the main characters it clearly states when asked about race "CAUCASIAN OR ANY OTHER ETHNICITY." This means that they were deliberately looking for white actors to play the leads. If it didn't matter, the sheets would have read "any ethnicity." COMPLETE. UTTER. BLATANT. RACISM. I'll not stand for it.

  • Why arent there any Chinese actors if they use so many Chinese references in the show? Fire nation houses, Chinese kanji everywhere, Fire nation topknots, Chinese fighting styles, and YIN AND YANG (as stereotypical it is) is a giant Asian symbol. It just doesn't seem right. Racism sucks.

  • 1st of all I just found out about the Live-action film Avatar. Is it too late to send mail???

Bronson Pelletier should be cast he's First Nation actor plus looks A Lot like Sokka google him seriously. He got cast in New Moon & I think it should open the doors for him in other projects like Avatar. He should have been cast how could they over look actors like him.

  • whoever said racism against whites is only reverse racism is an idiot. racism is racism.

i don't think their casting is that big of a deal. it's a movie, about a make believe place. also, sure there are many budding actors in san fran of "similiar descent" (FYI, their race isnt stated in the series either.) but risking costs with unknown talent is not smart..

i dont honestly get the big deal. maybe there just aren't enough american inuit or chinese actors to play the roles...

  • lol Asian Oprah. but seriously this casting is messed up. im not saying this cause im asian, im not. im black and i loved this show. Not only did they fail to recognise a strong asian theme in the show but they cast characters who dont fit the parts at all. I mean they cast a pale vampire actor as the energetic comedic Inuit Sokka. i mean...c'mon...

  • You're labelling an actor for the role he played. The guy may have played Jasper, doesn't mean he IS Jasper. Nor is he a 'vampire actor'. Just an actor who coincidentally played a vampire.

  • i would love to see the characters protrayed by asian actors and generally hate the fake world of hollywood, where everything has to be white and pretty, watch out for the upcoming movie version of the anime "Monster", the main character is by defintion an asian doctor working in germany, i fear they will change the character too, screw hollwood !!!!!

  • The entire show is based on asian culture, asian themes, asian martial arts.

But the movie will use all white actors.

Who decided on that BS? They need to send M Night Shyamalan back to "The Village" and get a real director. The cartoon characters are obviously asian/inuit in appearance.

  • I still say that a lot of East, South East Asians and Inuits will be angry to see white guys and Indians running around in there traditional clothing on screen. It is very difficult to remove the image of a group of people from its culture

  • Mr. Shyamalan, I know that from your previous works you are a person who believes in fighting the good fight. I would like to remind you of the words a wise man once said. Simply put, "Be the change you want to see."

  • In either case this is a shameful display of hollywood racism, and though it is not surprising, it is heartbreaking. Imagine the parents of Asian children, (I'm adopted myself with German-Irish parents) sitting through the truly wonderful experience of the cartoon, Avatar series only to later have to explain to their ten year old son or daughter, why the characters who they've fallen in love with and who look like them have now changed race.

  • This is a very simple case of "follow the money trail." M. Night Shyamalan is an extremely intelligent filmmaker who believes in creating films that address social injustice. His previous films contain a wonderful amount of peace promoting, thought provoking, material. If I had to take a guess, it would be that the studio heads presented him with an ultimatum; You can do the film with white actors, or not do it at all. Unfortunately this does not clear Mr. Shyamalan of any responsibility.

  • Thanks for postng this. I'm aghast with this decision.. I wish they'd keep true to the series! I hope they change their mind. It's almost insulting to have an all-white cast! Thanks!

  • I think the cast is all wrong. Choosing white kids is not only raisest but it makes the movie look stupid. I loved the cartoon and was looking forward to the movie until I saw the cast. I think almost everyone playing in the movie needs to be of asian desent.

  • why make a movie of this in the first place? 3D work better. Just look at FFVII Advent Children and Resident Evil Degeneration.

  • I don't mind the medium so long as it is pulled off well. It is about the raw talent of the people making the film and their ability to work together to make something breathtaking. In my mind's eye, I can see a live action version of this working. But it's a very difficult thing to pull off.

  • All this movie is gonna turn out like is Dragonball Evolution. And they casted taht SOOOOOOO wrong as well. (goku is white, off the mark.) They should go 3D. And wtf is shymalan doing anyway? He should try to make a decent movie then screw up the avatar. I really think they don't need a movie, though. They should have left the series alone at the finale.

  • yeah, they both sucked LOL

  • I wonder if any of these White Casts watches The Avatar?

  • yeah me too

  • idk but if they dont the movie is gonna suck. but thats just me.

  • my take: Katara, sokka, etc should have been first-nations; Toph and earth kingdom etc asian; possibly aang asian too. I actually think that most of the fire-nation seems very white. They've got massive beards, pale skin, and very prominent noses. Not that it matters to me, really. I just would have been pumped if they had cast characters that look remotely like the people looked in the cartoon.

  • yeah I agree bronson pelletier looks like Sokka & he's first-nation actor it's funny cause he's going to be in the same film as Jackson Rathbone (who's actually playing sokka) xD

  • i so agree cause i love avatar its my most fav show and now the movie is going to have white people in it and some characters dont look white at all. they should at least get someone who is the same color skin as sokka and katara. there are so many people who colors are different not only white.

  • I know I was upset with the casting. I thought M. Night Shyamalan said he was looking for unknown actors and people of ethnic backgrounds in an interview. AND Dragonball castin..oo terrible ahahah but its like the typical way things are done.

  • omg i know exactly what you mean, i mean cummon, goku white? and this just takes the biscuit. i wish the guy who made slumdog millionaire had the chance to direct this movie and not that retard.

  • Ugh, first Goku is white, now Aang, Kitara, and Sokka are white. It's just not right! O_O I'm from the caribs, and i'm not racist against whites, but this is blatant disrespect to asian/inuit culture and heritage. Not that spewing fire and water is a cultural thing, but the whole show on a whole is based on traditional values from the asian/inuit nations, and having actors there from would be highly appropriate. More racism from the movie industry, when will it end..

  • Well said!

  • Totally. With the Goku thing we can let it go because they don't blatantly use asian references but in avatar they are constantly using them. Its just sad.

  • And maybe the next pop culture is black? Who knows...

Today you see millions of teens listening to black singers, and some of them are imitating black people's accent, they even use the word nigga even though they aren't white. Black is becoming cool, little by little, and asian is going down the drain little by little. in my "horrible" opinion.

  • Two things:

1 - The African American people were taken over on ships of slavery from Africa to the USA, then after they arrived, they were treated very poorly. (That kind of history is hard for people to ignore)

2 - There are some successful black people in the media like Oprah. These people can fight for the rights of Blacks, but is there an Asian Oprah? Not yet.

  • Im glad you pointed that out. I watched the Turner Classic Movies presents RACE & HOLLYWOOD: ASIAN IMAGES IN FILM and it showed some of the stereotypes and roles asians are forced to play.

  • They take all cool features from other cultures like asian, natives, mayan, middle east and take advantage of it. In the movie Troy they used mongolian patterns. In starwars, they made the character costume concepts basing on asian and mayan traditional clothing. They also use subliminal messages to brainwash the viewers.

  • What kind of subliminal messages are you talking about?

  • I just said in general. Watch the: Disney and how they portray racism or search for subliminal messages. People watch and and they never notice it, but it is absorbed by their brains. When asked from a black girl which doll is bad she pointed at black doll instead of white doll = power of media. Just search around man.

  • If that's the power of the media, I guess I must have missed something, because I thought the media loved Obama.

  • Media is starting to portray blacks as normal and successful people. You notice that right? Little by little people are accepting blacks. For asians it is long way to go. Plus people tired of white president who's nothing but troubles, why not try a half black president? Government's agenda is different than regular mainstream media. -> watch?v=MTYn1WRCuoU

  • Or maybe the black doll just sucked for reasons other than its colour. Are you saying that she should have pointed at the white doll because the black one was better?

  • Search tudou for "降世神通.第三季(有字幕)02" and watch it before making up your mind.

  • I think the show is about none asian-like people that do asian stuff, so we don't have to be offended.

  • How many episodes have you seen?

  • Niiiice. We whites can get all the cool Asian culture without having to look at any Asian people. Don't you get how offensive that is?

  • I agree. To just take all the gems of a culture, but kick out the people that represent that culture and dress up white people in the clothes not belonging to them is highly offensive.

I mean if a white guy was in China 200 years ago and dressed up Chinese, that would be fine. But Hollywood has a thing against showing Asians in leading roles. Asians can be 'friends, geeks, villians, the person that dies', but Asians can't be the main crew that everybody cheers for!

    Seriously think about it!

  • Yeah... so non asians have asian accents like iroh? do non asians have names like "Toph Bei fong" and can actually be spelled with chinese characters... I dont think you can spell "Billy Bob thorton" in chinese characters.

  • There is no problem here.

    Haven't you seen Tropic Thunder?

  • Topic Thunder was a joke. It was actually making fun of how hollywood DOES cast the wrong ethnic people for roles they play in movies. Casting a maori to play an Arab or a Mexicon to play an Asian, etc. Seen Lost? Getting an Indian to play an Arab.

This movie isn't meant to be a complete joke like Tropic Thunder. At least, that's how the fans of the TV series feel. They want something epic and authentic.

  • Have u seen Tropic Thunder Unforgiveenforget? Do you not get the line "I'm the dude, playing the dude disguised as another dude" Its a joke because the "other dude" is black and he's white. Avatar isn't a joke

  • hmmm... isn't being pissed about the actors not being asian racist?

    just wondering

  • No. Your statement is the equivalent of saying isn't it racist when people who are the victim of racial discrimation stand up against the racism being dumped on them.

  • no, it's not.

    and i don't think you aren't right.

but technically, isn't complaining that the actors are not white racism?

  • Complaining that the Asians actors discriminated against for not being white, when the source material obviously is meant for Asians is not racism. If the source material was open for any ethnicity to play, then it would be racism, but the source material is very clear. Asian/Inuit people should be playing the main characters.

  • maybe there just aren't enough american inuit or chinese actors to play the roles...

i don't know. did they chose only white people on purpose? i mean did the people who cast that say "we will only take white actors" from the beginning? that would be racist

  • There's this huge group of budding actors in San Francisco, they could have easily found enough Asian American Actors there for the movie, but guess what. They went to Texas! I mean seriously, what did they expect to find there? They went to Texas because they deliberately didn't want to have Asian American Actors.

  • <.< they went to texas.

  • There are 25 million Asian Americans, with a huge population cluster in California, near Hollywood. Studios have no problem finding Asians to play the evil Asian mafia, or random peasants to populate Tom Cruise's Samurai cosplay. But suddenly, for this production, they do? Same goes for Native Americans. Watch "Into the West" and tell me "there aren't enough" First Nations/NDN actors to fill all of TWO lead roles.

  • "Tom Cruise's Samurai cosplay." THAT IS HILLIARIOUS... although i did like that movie still... stupid that he was "The Last Samurai"

  • I never watched it because of the way they made it. Last samurai is a white guy. And I will never spend my money on something that mocks me as an asian, my ethnic background or my ancestors culture. I call it a silent, invisible genocide in america, because they think there are already, aprox. 2 Billion asians on this planet, I don't know maybe more.

  • I see where you are coming from

  • Being racist to whites isnt considered racist ne more... its just reverse racism.

  • I've know about self hating whites. There's a lot of them around, but that has absolutely nothing to do with this film.

This film is a disgrace and a shameful adaption.

  • la comunidad latina tenemos que apoyar esta causa, no permitamos mas racismo en los medios de comunicacion

  • I'm from New Zealand, and I don't know spanish, but I used Babelfish to translate what you said so I could approve it.

I believe all of us, all peoples of the world should unite against racism wherever it rears its ugly head.

  • I agree. Racism sucks. And we all need to fight it together!

  • asian an inuit influence are a huge part in the show, and it's part of what makes it beautiful. for hollywood to actually take something like that and ignore it is shocking.

I sincerly hope that they don't ignore the numerous complaints they must be receiving

  • weird art decision? You're seriously on crack. Do you know what a casting call sheet is? The ones for this movie listed Caucasian first as what they wanted. They specifically did this because they constantly make Characters of Color white so they can appeal to the so called majority. Look at Dragonball and Earthsea. It's pretty blatant the racism Hollywood uses.

  • Do you have that casting call sheet? Man, if we could get our hands on that, that would be just appalling to see. Disgraceful, shameful and pitiful!

  • Man. Seriously, I made the video, I think it's terribly racist. I was just refering to stuff like lego starwars. Or when they animate classic stories into 3d films with fish and animals. Or the Clone Wars TV Series, how they look a bit like puppets.

But yeah, this casting decision is disgraceful.

  • my bad I must have misread your post... WE are on the same side. As far as the casting call sheets it's been mentioned in several blogs and posts on the EW site and Aing-aint-white site. They were apparently leaked some time ago before this final cast was announced.

  • there has always been racism. some director takes an asian based story, decides to choose white ppl to play some asian characters spot and everyone loses their mind. im sry this irritates me i dont agree wit cast but it nothing new and i dont know what ppl were expecting to happen. hollywood has done this countless of times. its not just racism its discrimination everywher. we have always had to deal with it and unfortunately i dont see an end.i think racism is alot bigger than a spot in a movie

  • I agree, but if enough people stood against it. It could stop, but normally we don't get the kind of numbers you need to make that level of change. What happened with Obama showed everyone that change is possible, even if they were just voting for the 'not George W. Bush guy'.

  • You don't know how many people think I'm trying to say the characters are white, I haven't watched the show, or something else because I'm making a reasonable point.

Like I said before, I really don't care what color the cast is. They could be green for all I care. I'm just sick of all these white people making such a big deal out of it when I know several Asians that don't even care.

  • So if a white person played the role in a martin luther king jr biographical movie... that wouldnt make sense??

  • I'm Asian also and I have Asian and white friends who are pissed about this.

  • -chuckles- Sokitome, anyone with a brain is pissed about this. xD

  • It is Dragonaball all over agian but if they can act like them then or the most part it is o.k but i really expected black and white

  • You don't know how many people think I'm trying to say that the characters are white or just think that I don't watch the show or whatever. I just made one little point about them not really being Asian and everyone gets all offended. And I think it's retarded, because it's mainly white people getting offended (BTW, I'm white...if I haven't pointed that out already).

So yeah, like I said before, I don't care what color the cast is. They could all be green for all I care.

  • Ok, let me just make this clear. I really don't care if the cast is Asian. I don't care if Aang is Mexican, Katara is White, Sokka is Black, and Zuko is purple. I really don't care. But then I see people making a fuss over the cast being white when they should be Asian, so I wanted to make a point to show people how wrong they were. Just leave it be. As long as the actors do a great job, that's all that should matter.

  • No, that isn't all that should matter, when hollywood has a long history of discriminating against Asians in leading roles and generally stereotyping them as villians or geeks. There is no need to cast only White people in the leading roles. The source material is rich with Asian/Inuit culture and to just whitewash the cast is such an insult. If there was no history of racism in Hollywood, I wouldn't care. But look at the forbidden kingdom. They just had to add a white boy for the audience.

  • Now it's not a matter of just Avatar not casting Asian characters, but that Asians don't star in many movies other than "villians [and] geeks". Then why start making your point about this now?

You know, as soon as people stop saying the characters are Asian, I'll have nothing to argue about. Just add one word..."influenced". If people just say the cast should be Asian because the characters are Asian in appearance, then I will be completely (100%) fine with that. :) That's all I was arguing.

  • I'm glad we could come to some understanding. I agree that the characters aren't Asians from our planet. I just think they're Asians from another planet based on our planet. And since the source material is based on Asian/Unuit culture, people from those respective cultures are the most qualified to play the mythical roles in the film.

  • It's actually Hollywood's history that makes me feel this casting decision is racist. If that context and background was not there, I would just see it as artistic license, unfortunately, that background is there though.

  • Uh, yeah, Daibhidh? Did you just say in your post that if Hollywood wasn't racist, then this white cast would be ok? Sorry dude, but are you on crack. Even if Hollywood was very open to minorities, then this white cast would still be WRONG! You want to know why? Because NONE of the main characters look white.

  • You misread me. I never said it would be good. I just said it wouldn't be racist, but some weird art decision. Like imagion they wanted to do a CGI version where all the characters are fish or ants. That's just a weird art decision right? But unfortunately, hollywood DOES have a bad track record with racism. So this casting decision is completely wrong.

  • I beg to differ. A lot of the man characters look caucasian. It's the style of art.

  • Zach, Mae and Jack were voice actors. But their actors on screen weren't white. The only way to make a faithful adaption of the TV series is to cast Asian and Inuit Americans, that way the appearance will be faithful and the accent too.

And though one movie casting decisions isn't a big deal, racism in general is a big whoop. And this is part of a much bigger picture. Its more of the same from Hollywood who has a tendacy to discriminate against Asian American actors.

  • What makes the characters Asian? Are they from Asia? Just because people claim they look Asian and they have some Asian influence doesn't make them Asian, just like me (white) being raised by with Mexican customs doesn't make me Mexican.

  • What makes the characters Asian? The answer: Their written language (Chinese), their customs, their worldview, their religion, their clothes, their houses, their diet, their Chinese martial arts. In case you didn't know, all the fighting styles are Chinese. What that means is if someone from the Fire Nation doesn't have bending, he'll use Shaolin Kung Fu to fight with. And if he does have Fire Bending, the Fire Bending is based on Shaolin Kung Fu. Sokka's Sifu taught him Chinese straight sword.

  • ??? ASIANS ARE FROM ASIA! I can speak Spanish, dress like a Mexican, live in a Mexican home, eat Mexican food, fight like a Mexican (lol), and participate in other Mexican customs, but that doesn't make me a Mexican.

  • You know in most cultures/countries, once you assimilate into their culture and ways, they consider you as one of them, even if you were born outside. A classic point is someone moves to America, but thinks and acts really different. A lot of Americans wouldn't call that person American, even if their have citizenship, but if his kids assimilate into the mainstream culture. They would be considered American, unless the people doing the considering are racist.

  • Are you a moron? Seriously. So if someone looks Asian and every aspect of their being is Asian or directly inspired from Asian culture that doesn't make them Asian? Really now? Do you understand how racist and stupid you sound?

  • True Story. -nods- It would be like sticking a white girl like me into India and saying, "Oh, don't worry, she's actually Indian."

  • So are you not letting my last comment go through because you don't have anything to counter it? Wow. Well, it was fun while it lasted. ;) Just wanted people to realize that Asia doesn't exist in the Avatar world, therefore, the characters cannot possibly be Asian. They'll learn one way or another.

  • Some people have things to do with their time. So I can't constantly check the comments. But consider this: Even if you're white, once your family has been living in China for 10 generations, all your great great, etc, grandkids would all be considered Chinese. And the people living in the Avatar world have been living there much longer!

  • If you're white and you live in China for 10 generations, I doubt you'll have even a couple of white people marrying into your family, so after 10 generations, your great, great, great, great, etc. grand kids will at least be 95% Chinese, so of course they'll be considered Chinese.

And you say the people living in the Avatar world have been there much longer? They've been in China longer than that? No, so they can't possibly be Chinese OR Asian. ;)

  • What I'm saying is they've been living in mythical Asian/Inuit countries/nations for a very very long time and since we can't actually get real life mythical person to act in the movie. I.e. we can't go to the fire nation and do auditions for this movie. The best we can do is get their real life counterparts to do the job! Since this mythical world is 99.9999999% based on it!

  • there were not any actors on the screen. they were drawings on a piece of paper I understand what your saying and i would TOTALLY agree with you if this actually happened but this is just a made up story from nickelodeon that turned out really well.

  • There were not actors on screen, but there were characters. And those characters live in an Asian/Inuit based world.

Here's the thing. I heard an Asian say this once: They love our culture, our worldview, our language, our customs, our food, our clothes, they just don't want US!

To take all the great things of Asia, yet discriminate against perfectly capable Asian American actors, and dress up white people in a culture not their own is the height of disrespect.

  • hay, ignore the racist people. i like your vid and it IS racist what they are doing. and i never realized just how UN western Avatar was untill i heard they were gonna try to ruin it. i live in Texas, and you know what? next time i hear something racist, i'm gonna slap someone!! i swear to god!

    * deep cleansing breath*

they may not be Asian, but in OUR universe the thing that looks most like them is Asian and Inuit. so that's how it should be.

  • I mean, seriously. This was Jet Li and Jackie Chan's first project together, do they seriously think we're so racist and stupid that we wouldn't follow the story or wouldn't get drawn into it without having a white boy as the lead? Lethal Weapon 4, Jet li is the villian. Dragon Ball Z, the lead is white. That is only the tip of the iceberg, if people don't see how commonplace this is, it really begs the question.

  • i read ONE of the kids they thought of allready as a allot of martial arts training. but that shouldn't matter. i don't think it should be too hard to get KIDS to learn certain stunts. they're smart! go to a reservation, pick some hot brother and sister kids, teach them the right stuff! there's Saka and Katara. i kinda would like the people they choose to be MIXED races. since the real races from the show aren't quite like what we have in real life. ya know? Zuko's nose is big, but not his eyes.

  • It's a movie true, but it unlines standard hollywood practice, which is to screw over the Asian American actors. If normally hollywood embraced Asian Actors and gave them centre stage more frequently, no one would be able to call these casting decisions racist.

We could only call it unfaithful to the source material which is based on Asian and Inuit culture. To fans of the show, this isn't 'just a cartoon'. It has heart, spirit, morals, a sense of humour and actually has some substance to it.

  • i didnt mean to say its JUST a cartoon i love the series on nick. but i was amazed how it turned into racism. for all we are concerned there might not have been any asian actors interested in the parts of zuko, katara, or sokka. if there were asians that auditioned BETTER than the white ppl they chose then i wud admit that it was racist and i wud be a little ticked off

  • lol what possessed the director to make the main badass jessy mccartny i dont think that guy has ever said "shit" in his life time how could he play a bad ass like zuko lol, all i say is why did m night have to kill a perfectly good series.

  • OK, here's who you write to: Nick Movies Re: The Last Airbender movie 5555 Melrose Place Modular Bldg #213 Los Angeles CA 90036 USA Blinding Edge Pictures 100 Four Falls Corporate Center Suite 102 Conshohocken, PA 19428
  • Hmm. I was disappointed to hear about this from my sister. My siblings and I are huge fans of the show and were a bit skeptical about hearing of the production of a movie...and this seals the deal. I am not going to see it if they "white wash" the cast. It's an insult to the show that has many Asian influences. I believe they are afraid to take a chance on any ethnic cast and so chose the actors/actresses they have. Let's all send our letters! I am!

  • Holy crap! Next you're going to tell me that Heath Ledger wasn't gay when he rocked Brokeback Mountain. Damn those studio execs.

  • At 0:31 it isn´t Zuko´s family, it was just a man in that shop in book 3 Sokka´s master.

  • i HATE jesse mcCartney. can u believe tht they're casting jesse mcCartney (the whitest bubble gum popstar!) to play Zuko?!?! It's infuriating! We all have to join in the uprise against this! If we write enough letters, they'll change it. its happened before! just be polite in the letters. and be strong. Im not going to see the movie if they cast these people, are you?

  • i wont see it too

when i heard it for the first time i could realy crie i mean there goes my dream ( im a katara cosplayer;]) i thought M.night Shyamalan was a good director but i gues i was wrong :<

  • OMG! they just chose Jason Isaacs [an old English actor] to play admiral Zhao!?

how could they?? do they really wanna white wash all characters in this story???

it says in IMDB that the casting was by Douglas Aibel...i don't know who the hell that guy is but i'm sure he'll get a lot of complaints from fans all over...

if only we can send him a letter or something -_- *sigh

  • Jason Isaacs is the VA for Zhao..... That is a bit more permissible.

  • it's really insulting to know that they don't at all accept the letters sent by fans. i've been reading the threads on livejournal and i read that a lot of the letters were sent back with smudges of black marker all over the address...it might be that there's a problem with the address, or they just don't want to be bothered by fans :[

They think an Asian influenced world is white people pretending to be chinese or asian... It's an inexcusable insult to the asian race and culture.

  • ...they should have chosen Talyor Lautner as someone XD

Sorry, I just think that for "true story" movies they get people who look or make them look quite similiar to the original person outta respect.

Can't they do this for Avatar?

I don't think that the choses are racist just disappointing.

  • ..hmm.. taylor is kinda brown...he could play sokka! lol xD

  • You know, I saw on a Hollywood Insider site that M. Night said his top actors for Aang were all young Asian American boys but he didn't have any say whatsoever in the cast choice. The final decision was made by Douglas Aibel, apparently. :/

  • A lot of people think that post was a fake.

  • First, I do not have anything against the actors. They are caught in something beyond their control. However, that does not excuse the fact that the Avatar cast was white-washed. I do think the casting job could have been done better, and I certainly do not want to cringe while watching M. Night make a fool out of himself.

On a lighter note, since M. Night is in his movies as a small role, I want him to be the Cabbage Merchant.

  • I don't have anything against the actors either. And I'm optimist about M. Night's adaption with the exception of the casting decision. I think it would be great to see M. Night as the Cabbage Man.

  • here's the simple fact that why the main actors are white. asian doesnt look as good as white ppl on screen. can u name me any good looking asian kid actors? btw i'm asian.

and i dont like M. night... his movie has been going downhill since six sense.

  • I heard it said that all the actors that make it in Asia all have whitish features, that they look kind of european or eurasian.

But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That is to say, to each his own.

Some members of some ethnicities don't like the look of their own, but only of others, while other ethnicities considered their own superior to others.

There is positive racism and negative racism.

Considering one race better than another is positive, while considering one worse is negative.

  • There's heaps of Chinese actresses I think are really beautiful, even more so than European actresses. But I'm white so I guess it doesn't count. But I don't think the Chinese are superior. I can appreciate beauty in all ethnicities.

  • Considering any one race better than the other is still racist...but you can spin anything to be racist these days, I guess.

  • Wow...maybe it's because none of them get any chances to make it big because white guys are chosen over them.

  • Boo Boo Stewart. Adorable, Asian and a Martial Arts expert. And you are a racist idiot.

  • the movie is so gonna suck! i mean, what idiot would put jessie mccartney as zuko?????!!!!!?!?!?!?! im sorry just jessies a total faggot!!!!! >=(

  • I don't think it's racism, M. Night isn't white, he has around the same shade of skin as both Katara and Sokka. Let's not jump to conclusions. I hope he isn't being racist with the aisan thing though, I totally agree with you there it's a very high possiblity he is with that one! Still, perhaps he saw really good acting with the acting roles so...we can only hope that he does a good job and recasts for Zuko!!!

  • Well, believe it or not, there are plenty of brown people who are ashamed of their color, and discriminate against anyone darker than they are.

I know this from experience: It exists a lot among Latinos, unfortunately.

  • doug aibel cast it not m.night im not sure if he hadfinale say but i think this doug guy fult

  • Just for the record. I don't see Aang as any perticular kind of ethnicity, but I think you probably could find someone of oriental descent who looks like him and acts well. That's what good casting is all about.

  • Well, Katara and Sokka are Inuit. And I don't think Aang, Zuko, or his family look Asian other than their hair...

But still, as GanXingba said, the only thing they haven't done to show that the whole Avatar WORLD is based on Asian and Inuit (but mostly Asian) culture is slap a sticker on their foreheads to indicate as much. Hell, does "Aang" sound white to anyone here?

So to just go and cast white actors is just racist!

I'M WITH YOU! I'm sending my letter asap!

  • Clearly Aang's real name is Andrew, right? Perhaps they'll call the white guy who plays him Andrew to reflect the original culture. Karata must be Karthine and Sokka must be Samuel. Clearly, those were the real names for the show, but there is some fan conspiracy to make everyone THINK the real names are of tribal original. The true spirit of the show is to cast white people with the names Andrew, Karthine and Sam. The nerve of these fans for making people believe it was Aang, Karata and Sokka!

  • Grr, I hate them fans!

  • what was this all about.

  • Are you being sarcastic? Because if you are that explanation is hilarious. If you're serious, well... I admire your creativity I guess but that's truly idiotic. I'll just go with sarcasm.

  • For the record, I'm totally against the white-washing of the film...but i just wanted to point out that Samuel is a JEWISH name with hebrew and not Causcasian origins. Just wanted to be fair : )

  • i too think aang, meany airbenders, and toph look white. And if actors are good it shouldn't matter what color thay are that being type you dont see the point that the fact thay pick that jeese as zuko who does not act, speak, or look anything like zuko show me that the makers dont give a f&*^ about ethnic actor or staying ture to the show and if that don't change it we sould just boycott it 3 thing whould happing the never gets made/thay change it or/thay loose money(sorry for my typing)

  • hell yeah I agree!

but just out of curiosity... how'd you get that address?

  • ok guess ill do it any one asain out there pissed?

  • *raises hand* Japanese and pissed

  • Yeah, I'm disappointed about this news as well. Being an Avatar fan myself, I was hoping for some ethnic diversity in this movie and chance for Asian-Americans to prove something in Hollywood. Even Shyamalan himself is Indian, so I thought it would be a definite possibility. But then again, it's Hollywood after all and I'm not surprised they casted white people. -_- It's sad really. I'm wondering how they'll pull all these Asian-influenced things off without it looking awkward.

  • It's not like the characters on Avatar just had different skin tones or hair styles. The skin and hair represented their cultures and was a part of their identities.

I mean, if you were going to make a live action "Hey Arnold" movie, would you make Gerald white? How about Phoebe? I would hope not. That was another show that greatly emphasized ethnic and racial diversity, even though the characters' backgrounds were more similar to each others than the Avatar characters.

  • This isn't just about color either. I mean, yeah, you can make Ben Kingsly look Indian by giving him suntan and say he's Gandhi, but he had the stones to pull it off. This is just the Disney Wonder bread team. These are the people who you get if you're planning on only having tweenaged girls see your movie.

The show explored other cultures and religious ideals. You would have to be a complete idiot to not see the inuit and asian influences. The casting should have reflected this.

  • Geez, Avatar is an American Cartoon/Anime. What does it matter that the roles are played by white people? Did that do that on purpose?

I mean, after a vacation in the south of france my color is the same as Sokka's. Also why does Iroh look like an Asian and sound like a russian? It's all fictual.. They might have based it on Asian cultures but that doesn't mean that they are Asians... Also, I could call Avatar racist because there are no blonde people... This is just weird guys...

  • You miss the point that Hollywood has a history of discriminating against Asians in leading roles. If the fiction was about some strange lifeforms on another planet that are half flower/half bug, then sure. You could cast anyone for that or do CGI. But the whole culture, lifestyle, worldview, food, written language (Chinese), customs of Avatar is Asian. So it does matter if you want a faithful adaption.

You could say Lord of the Rings is fiction too, so you should get Jamaicans as the leads.

  • Did you ever see the movie inspired by the anime Death Note? They only used asian people, and clearly in the anime Misa has blonde hair and looks very Europian/American. And she was played by a Japanese girl with black hair. Also L was played by a Japanese, while the anime says he is part british.

You should not forget that you can see discrimination in everything.

  • Japan is tiny compared to the USA, and there aren't too many White actors fluent in Japanese that they could choose from. While America has a large Asian community to choose from. The only reason not to use them is either laziness or racism. Anyway, even if there were lots of White actors fluent in Japanese, yet they choose only Japanese anyway, that would only prove they're racist, because they didn't want to see White people on screen! That they thought Japanese were a superior people!

  • Misa dyed her hair...lots of people do it in Japan. Lots of people do it everywhere. Plus, Misa is a Japanese name for Christ-sake. Not to mention Japan is a very homogeneous nation.

  • You miss the point. There are racists out there who don't want to see people who are not of their ethnic group on screen. If there was any plays featuring Jews or Blacks, but the play was written by a German, the Nazi's would've rewritten the play without the Jews or Blacks in it. Why? Because they don't want to look at those people. Racism does exist in the world. Some people don't want to see people of color on the silver screen.

  • Hollywood has this thing about casting Asians in the roles of villians. Why would you do that unless you hate Asians and don't want to socialize with them? I have meet lots of white people who'd never want to be friends with Asians, because they look funny or different. If Hollywood truly wanted to equality, they'd cast Asians in the roles of the heroes sometimes. Because WE ALL LOVE the HEROES. The way they cast Asians reflects their true feelings towards them!

  • But that's the thing. Tolkien wrote from a British/Celtic cultural background. So having Jamaicans playing the leads wouldn't make any sense. Picture Gandalf the Grey saying, "Yeah Mon". Sure you can completely ignore the source culture which inspired the fiction. But many feel that is disrespectful. We want an EPIC AUTHENTIC CULTURAL FILM.

  • They got to keep it real. And do you know any young good asian actors who could play them? Or do we get a jackie chan movie? (voice-over style) It's hard to find good actors you know.

And please speak for yourself ;)

  • And anyway. Just because it's an American show doesn't mean there aren't any Asian American actors who could do a fine job. Hollywood does have a terrible track record always painting Asians as the bad guys. This film was and still is a chance for them to prove that wrong.

  • Always? In a lot of movies Asians are the good guys... Jackie Chan, Steven Seagal... I don't really get the point. Maybe I never paid attention to who the bad guys are. Also why is it called Aang Ain't White? Aang is white, okay white and blue then but still :S

  • you think iroh sounds russian even though he's voiced by a japanese man? you think misa is american? you believe a man is part british if he spends some time in britain? YOU THINK AANG IS WHITE AND STEVEN SEAGAL IS ASIAN?

.....don't bother arguing with this person. he's just too stupid. he can't even spell "fictional" and "European" correctly.

  • Give me a break.. I'm Dutch my english is not perfect, why the hell should you judge me on that... Your blind if you can't see aang is white. Or do you want me to say he is white and blue?

I think the only one who is stupid is you. You start to insult me for no reason I can think of, just because we don't share the same opinion. Doesn't that make you a racist?

btw: Read my posts correctly, I said Misa looks American, not she is American

    peace out.

  • it's not just your opinions or spelling i'm juding you on. it's your FACTS. you lost all credibility (not that you had any) when you said STEVEN SEAGAL WAS ASIAN. so i guess Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is asian too.

and you say "asians are the good guys in a lot of movies". maybe as extras. aside from a jackie chan or jet li movie how many AMERICAN films can you name that have an asian lead character? for that matter how many asian actors can you even name? probably not more than 20 if even.

  • Aang is supposed to be Tibetan. The Airbenders were homages to the tibetan monks. Aang is just a pale skinned tibetan homage.

  • "Call it racist because there are no blonde people"--yes, that make PERFECT sense doesn't it? Because blondes (especially bleach) are the most discriminated race in history, aren't they? What with all of those hurtful "dumb" jokes....

But, of course, that is the only thing you would find racist, isn't it--I mean, you never thought to notice that there are no black skinned or red-heads in the show either.

    Give me a break.

Of course, I shouldn't expect someone like you to understand what I mean...

  • The whole reason it is racist is because the show takes place in an alternate world that is CLEARLY asian based. To represent these characters with all white actors is completely ridiculous and doesn't do the show justice. And as far as no black skinned or red-heads... how many of those people would you see in an ANCIENT asian culture? Its not being racist, its being accurate. Not only is the casting not accurate to the show, it makes it seem like their ethnicity should be ignored completely.

  • Man dw we got a full force attacking we will claim what we want but putting white ppl for asians do you know who made this asians not stupid whites!(no offence) like we love avatar but making a movie wiht white ppl i rather watch a baby show thne watch this!

  • It's true the animation was done in Korea, but the creators of the show are white. And not all whites are stupid. That's racist. Anyway. The white creators of the show are awesome guys with great heart and spirit!

  • um wasnt it done in japan any ways you are white yes? but wtf how do they have great spirit this is a asian show and thats thats! you would love avatar to be white ppl performed because ur white! did you know ur being rasict to me us our asian part of the world just because they voice it dosn't mean they have spirit so maybe think about it Vote For Asians NOT WHITE! got that!

  • You know what this is? It's a twist! This has got to be a Shamylan plot twist, where he sets us up thinking Jesse whatever is in it, and then WHAM! We'll be treated to a movie where asian/inuit characters are played by not white actors. Come on Paramount.

  • Actually, I don't think that's the twist. The twist is, he made a movie that sucks more than "Lady in the Water".
