Hard to compare, they have really different styles, but one thing is sure. A member of Metallica is just as much a master as Joe. Theyre both just as much masters, but theyre playing in completly different leauges. Is it about how hard it is? Is it about how good is sounds? Because Theyre good at different things and people will have different opinions about what music the prefer.

@JcFox94 I think legato sounds amazing & have always preferred it to the choppy sound of picking every note. Dont get me wrong tho, depending on what part of the song it is picking every note sounds sweet, but the feel Satch puts behind some of his solos make you hair stand up. I do love Nuno tho his solos are always perfect and his funky rhythm playing is kinda hard for others to touch. I just love guitar playing in general.
Kirk's got some real good "traditional" 80's metal guitar playing on the early Metallica albums. It would only be fair to consider all that rather than diss him for his excessive wah-wah usage more recently. Satriani is indeed the real master, but a pupil's aim is never to outdo his teacher, but rather to find his own voice.

Joe, on the other hand, I don't believe can be compared to anyone. He is one of the Grandmasters of not just guitar playing, but of musicianship. Musicians of all types can look up to his creativity and philosophy on music for guidance. He's a pure genius.

@savageblue25 wtf are you on about, Joe Satriani NEVER repeats himself and Kirk does ALL THE TIME. Kirk can barely play guitar now, he just hits random notes and wanks his wha wha pedal....as a guitarist who has played multiple Metallica covers in bands on lead i can honestly say that Kirks solo's are stupidly easy to learn once you have learned one of them. Joe Satriani plays so much more melodically and is so much more technical than Kirk

@ArseLoad0fMetal666 I totaly agree.Alot of kirk's riffs and solos are very repetitive...and emotionless.Kirk lacks of soul.And now I understand why Satch wasn't included in the Rolling stones top 100 guitarists...if satch's worst student is on 11th place...there's just nothing above number 1 and satch would be on the 100 above 1....

Even though Kirks solos are easy, it doesn't mean they are bad. Some of the greatest(or atleast iconic) solos are not overly complex.

@sonicnator i definately agree with the sentiment of that statement, but Kirks solos have very little soul AND are very easy. To me they sound like a VERY ammateur guitar player trying to shred and show off while not worrying to compose a proper solo

But for what he is and what he plays, he has skill. His solos may not be overly complicated or organized, but they are memorable and just fun to play.
I could be very wrong like this considering I myself am a noob at guitar(just started last year), but this is just what I think.

It's just that comparing a god like Joe to a total douchy hole in the wall like Kirk is laughable. Actually, seriously, I just lol'd a bit when I took a second to think of that. @JcFox94 I think legato sounds amazing & have always preferred it to the choppy sound of picking every note. Dont get me wrong tho, depending on what part of the song it is picking every note sounds sweet, but the feel Satch puts behind some of his solos make you hair stand up. I do love Nuno tho his solos are always perfect and his funky rhythm playing is kinda hard for others to touch. I just love guitar playing in general.

Kirk's got some real good "traditional" 80's metal guitar playing on the early Metallica albums. It would only be fair to consider all that rather than diss him for his excessive wah-wah usage more recently. Satriani is indeed the real master, but a pupil's aim is never to outdo his teacher, but rather to find his own voice.

Joe, on the other hand, I don't believe can be compared to anyone. He is one of the Grandmasters of not just guitar playing, but of musicianship. Musicians of all types can look up to his creativity and philosophy on music for guidance. He's a pure genius.

There is no competition. In fact, if Kirk Hammet had not been a part of Metallica, he would've never amounted to anything. He is a slightly less than mediocre musician, with very little creativity. Satriani is the teacher of both Vai and Kirk and more, and satriani can execute what Vai can't but he doesn't have the ability to write emotional stuff like Vai and especially Kirk(fade to black, sanitarium). satriani stays too technical he is like a ''guitar-pedia'' unlike his students. For Dime respect the man he is not only a guitar player he is teaching god how to play you know :) Dime & Kirk all the way...

Just listen to "All Alone", "The Forgotten, Part 2", "Thinking of You" or "Clouds Race Across The Sky" sometime. Satch can be very technical when he wants to but typically plays with great restraint. @isaacvolz Kirk did reply to Satch's request for him to do a stink with G3. His response was "no"... which IMO is the right choice. To even think of Hammett playing up there with people like Petrucci, Malmsteen, Johnson, Gilbert and Steve Vai is laughable.

Kirk is good at what he does and fits Metallica well but anybody who plays guitar knows that he is completely out of his league with someone like Satriani. One can prefer Hammett but to honestly think that he's a "better guitar player" is absolutely ridiculous.

Yeah Satch is better technically, but I much prefer Kirk's playing, very soulful player in my opinion. I don't think the solos shown here are Kirk's best. But of course, all you internet trolls will continue hating on Hammett even though you couldn't play half the stuff he does.

But, Satriani is freakin AMAZING. People don't like Phil cause he's a Christian and sings about God. Still, his talent is undeniable. Technically, no one touches him. IMO.. K. Hammett licks the shoes of him, Vai, Satch, Page, Hendrix, SRV. E. Johnson, John Petrucci etc. etc.
