The NIF is a great experiment. However for practical fusion feeding electricity to the grid, ignition would need to occur 10 times a second. This facility will produce fusion once every month at best...so there's a way to go. But just because there's a way to go, doesn't mean than humanity shouldn't, or can't, go there. More than ever, we need to.
@congressmon lol? The first hydrogen bomb test was in 1954, we achieved fusion over half a century ago, and the sun and stars have been doing it for billions of years. People think it is impossible to harness the energy (directly, though solar power, photosynthesis are indirect I suppose), but if the process is possible, why would people think we can't control it? We can grow babies in test tubes so what can't we achieve? I laugh at those people who doubt human potential.
Yeah .... @obesehairydog ... but the fools can't solve problems like obesity, world hunger, or poverty.... And it only cost about 3 billion to build the tokamak, while the "war" in Iraq/Afghanistan cost at least 80 billion and continues to rack up a bill.
The French also have an almost exact similar facility as this NIF called the Laser Mega Joule (Finished in 2010 with 240 lasers compared to 192 of this NIF). But it`s also mostly for Nuclear Weapons research just as this NIF so the French keep very quiet about it.
i'll be glad if they don't blow up the bay area years late and billions over budget right on

I remember 15 years ago when geeks and visionaries were being laughed at and ridiculed for even thinking fusion was possible.

With NIF and LHC science is finally getting the freaking cool looking devices of the Sci-Fi movies. :D

"National Ignition Facility shorts"
..bit of a dramatic title.. I was expecting to see the aftermath of some massive short circuit event that fried everything.
