Interesting remarks tuscanman & tehen. You two more or less confirm some idea I developed over the last months that Elina borders the soprano side. Because of her high notes. On the other hand her timbre differs, and off course the other color of her sound.
I am very interested in your further comments though.
I think great voices have options ;) Maria Callas could have made a career as a dramatic mezzo, or even a coloratura mezzo, but also she could sing those high coloratura soprano roles and the dramatic soprano, etc...same with other great voices, they are not just one dimensional.
Garanca is a mezzo folks. She's got an outstanding range and flawless technique. But, high notes don't make a mezzo. her tambor is mezzo. and thank god- opera needs more fabulous mezzo's!
She has a pleasant voice with good agility but she is a soprano. She is in good company: Bartoli, Von Stade and many others are (or were) sopranos. Her comfort zone is the tessitura of a typical lyric soprano. Netrebko has a darker color. In this opera you don't understand who's singing what.
Depends, some lyric mezzos border the line between soprano and mezzo, others like Marilyn Horne, decided to be mezzos when they grew another octave of chest voice. And others have a dark color but high notes like a soprano. I just think it has to do with the color and the tessitura and if they can comfortably sit in the low register or not.
And most of them don't have agility or high notes though. Elina could develop into an assoluta (soprano sfogato) given the right conditions. She certainly has the range.
Superb!!!! Her voice is much fuller and creamier throughout the complete register than previous leading Romeos on record: Agnes Baltsa and Vesselina Kasarova. Kasarova's fast vibarto is just too off-putting in this more lyrical role, than say Rossini, where she excels. Garanca is up there at the top with Dame Janet Baker, maybe even better :)
I think she has a really good top! her high B's sound effortless, which is not the case for very many mezzos. Also her low notes are dark and rich, which I like.
Very fine rendition of this beautiful piece. Colourful, perfect control of the voice in this demanding tessitura. brava !

I think you have all the reasons to say so. The real top singers are mostly in more than one direction gifted with certain capacities.
Thank you for your reply

Elina ya no es un futuro prometedor, sino una o la mejor mezzo de la actualidad

It's good to know Garanca will not be known for this role...Kinda dull...She's no Larmore, who really owns this.

In my opinion Garanca is a soprano not a mezzo. I like the mezzos with naturally darker and havier voices better.

@1210Jazz She is wonderful without a doubt... one of the best "Mezzos" but as female opera singers go... I would put Tebaldi at the top of the list.

Renata? O_o, Renata was good at a couple of roles, but she had no flexibility and her top notes were strained and screamed.

gran bella voce la garanca.... ottima linea di canto, molto elegante, come dovrebbe essere nel belcanto.....

S'agit-il de l'interprétation dans son disque "Bel canto" ou dans l'intégrale des Capuleti? C'est en tout cas sublime.
