@afternoonish The technique Shafer outlines is collapsing the flasher, putting a rubber band around it, then dunking it in water and letting it dry. That causes it to prefer to be compressed.

Just holding it open longer will make it retract more slowly.

I read one of Jeremy Shafer's "Origami to Astonish and Amuse" a long time ago.. I recommend it to anyone interested in origami. Shafer is very intelligent and has a wicked wit that is apparent throughout the book (I believe he made a diagram for a crumpled piece of paper), which makes it very easy to read & understand.
