I was out that day.. it didn't seem big but it just jacked up and did what you see.. destroy! my buddy is on the right of that guy who stood up he put his board on the side and went under.. he said he was talking to some guy and didnt see it till he heard people yelling and he wanted to shit him self but instead he went under and took the beating.. they do make small (30 breath) tanks. In the Marines we used them for helo flights over water. They are about the size of a skinny 1 liter bottle and could theoretically fit in a punch on your back or shoulder. The valve is small and the regulator is the same as a diving regulator, blow out to clear, then breathe. A soft compressed air tank would be impossible, think about it. that would be a great tow in wave. particularly at blacks cause when you are fighting thru all that big stuff to get outside it takes its toll..but tow in in big waves saves you alot of energy and time. then you can focus on the surfing part. still sometimes you do get hammered no matter what.

@chingchangchongfly Filmed at high tide, and that's way outside where the waves get focused right through the canyon, then back off. Once it hits the inside, high tide or low, 90% of the time it's a top to bottom beach break that's very hard to make for a long ways. As far as beach breaks go in southern CA, other than Silverstrand or maybe El Porto, there is none that breaks as hard as Blacks.

Because Blacks wave is produced by an offshore deep water canyon that concentrates the swell lines like a funnel; big set waves can literally "sneak up" on you because you dont actually see the wave till it hits the shallow part of the shelf. And there is just no where to hide when you get caught inside on one. The people saying the guys are stupid for not moving, have never been to Blacks.

I had an old G&S 7'6" gun for those big days, and even then I could still get caught inside and trounced once in awhile! When you're 75yrds out surfing 6-7 footers then "Oh crap here comes a 10-12 ft. face 120yds out.. I'm trapped!" lol I wouldn't trade those days for anything. Got IB one Winter in the 80's a north swell with 20ft faces! Got my ass handed to me a few times then!

Great memories thinking back to all the massive days I've surfed Blacks. Paddling out and nearly having my head ripped clean off my shoulders by a heaving lip. Only thing I've ever felt that compares is getting flogged at Pascuales, Mainland Mex. A couple near death/near-drowning experiences along the way, but toughened me up so most other beatings pale in comparison. I strongly recommend surfing Blacks on a massive swell if not for this reason alone.

In November 1976 I was at Blacks with Dave Freeman and Dave Voth and it was the hairiest I've ever been in. On the way there we could hear them breaking at UCSD about a mile away. I got a Churchill ripped off my foot, swam to the surface, hit sand, wrong way, went to the real surface with about a foot thick of foam, another wave was breaking on my face, I inhaled all the foam I could and dove.
