@halo3isawesome321 attached the person to an external "heart". It is a machine which performs the functions of a normal heart. It is a very complex machine, but it saves many lives.
although, there's a complication where after they finished the surgery and they want to restart the heart...the heart don't start beating at all... it's hard being a surgeon...
stop the heart does mean that you kill the patient. Usually, there's about 5 minutes to spare before brain death from the moment you stop the heart. In order to operate the heart, we need to stop it first, or else the surgery will be very difficult. So, first, they created an artificial circulation that can replace the heart for awhile. they use either perfusion machine or heart-lung machine?, i think. then, they stop the heart using a chemical, something called cardioplenig?, i dont remember

Yes, it is gory. It is also something that many people are not able to do. I think that these physicians deserve the utmost praise for overcoming these universal fears in order to contribute more to humanity in one day than most others in their lifetimes.
@halo3isawsome321 not positive but i believe when they stop the heart the patient is usually on bypass which means that they re route the blood and artificially oxygenate it before sending it on its way. this takes the need for heart activity out of the equation.
@halo3isawsome321 No they hook the arteries of the heart up to an artificial temporary heart, in order to bypass the heart, so it is not pumping any blood. Then they use a potassium solution to slowly stop the heart.
@halo3isawsome321 the patient is hooked up to a bypass machine... so the body is still receiving blood and nourishment, but it's being oxygenated and pumped by a machine outside the body. so technically yes, they were dead, but the body and brain was still very much alive.
@halo3isawsome321 Yes, it's called a standstill surgery. They lower the body temperature to 60* and they stop the heart so they can fix the problem, and then they warm them back up and they resuscitate the patient. Hope this helps!
@x0ticShwty Bacteria, organisms, dust, etc - if it can enter the bloodstream it can have disastrous effects on the immune system/blood system, which could eventually lead to death.
Also, if not constantly moisturized, the organ itself would dry out, just like a slice of roast under sunlight - this would cause instant cardiac arrest, in which it would be extremely difficult to resuscitate.
Of course, Mr. Obama thinks all of us docs are "millionaires and billionaires". Not sure who is going to want to go thru the stress, years, and expense to do this in the future as we get devalued...

@vimithavalappil - usually if it's a certain type of open heart surgery they cut the sternum & muscles open and essentially break about 10 of your ribs, it's a fun time
