I believe the murderers also admitted in jail that they specifically killed him because was gay. (a straight-up admitting). It seems that throughout history the religious fundamentalists have always identified minority groups on which to focus their hate. First it was the Jews - bibliical quotes were used to justify killing them and expelling them from nations. Then it was 'witches' - herbalists and practitioners of indigenous religions, burned alive in their millions in Europe. For a hundred years in the US the Bible was used endlessly to justify slavery, segregation, inequality and bans on inter-racial marriage.

Interestingly, it's only be the last couple centuries or so that the Bible was read as literal material. Literalism became popular, imho, it reinforced latent fears of others of different cultures/lifestyles other than the norm while still giving the whole God/Jesus message. Centuries previous, I believe it was all interpretted (which posed its own problems of warping interpretations for ones own desires; separation of church as state wasn't active back then, as I'm sure you're aware)

[to JayCanuck]. I don't know why literalism is on the increase at the moment - but it is affecting all religions. Islam was moderate and tolerant (with a few extremists) for several centuries, but now the literalists, such as the Taliban, have now just about destroyed civilized values in many Islamic nations. Hindu nationalism and extreme Zionism are also very recent problems. Christian fundamentalists are, I fear, an equally serious threat to America.
