Thanks for this episode, especially as I missed it as part of the BBC's current re-runs. This is one of the all time great television series, and you have done a great service posting it here on YT in its entirety!
@michaelwright999 -- BS. Been there and had a great time. Even had a hotel manager go out of their way to get us a room when we arrived without a reservation on a holiday weekend in France.
5:37 Major General Collins speaks about the US Army's ability to take casualties in a truthful way that NO General would be able to speak today. We have become so casualty averse that I don't know if America would be able to fight a "real" war where we would have to take thousands of casualties. While I feel true anguish for the families that lost their loved ones in Iraq and Afghanistan I wonder if we would fight in combat that would cost tens of thousands. I really wonder...
@randy95023 well,your opponents were really that strong,they should try attacking a real force,like france,britain,russia,greece,china,etc...
well i dont think that would happen anyway,they are all "allies" now,under the UN law...actually what i know about UN law,is that an aggressor without prior reason nor aproval from UN should be the enemy of UN,but i guess UN is just lack of commitment to its laws,tsk....
@randy95023 Why shouldn't we be casualty averse? What is there to be gained in Afghanistanand Iraq that merits thousands of casualties? You can't compare the liberation of France to the two wars now in which even decisive victories would do little to bolster American interests.
@Spaceweed10 you're the pathetic,they never wanted their beloved capital to be wrecked,that's why they have to give it up,luckily the germans did not destroy the city,same on rome,the germans did not occupy rome,they have respect for it somehow...
and people keep saying germans have no heart,very evil,demons,etc...
@Spaceweed10 when the allies have reached paris during napoleonic era,napoleon himself has to surrender himself rather than having the capital destroyed in battle,that's how they love and respect their capital...
the french are not pathetic people,i dare you lead an army attacking france now,then you'll know how "pathetic" they are,tsk...
More often than not it is the British and especially Canadian/Polish formations which are blamed for the failure to close the gap.
Seldom is it mentioned that the U.S. 80th Infantry Division failed to advance at Argentan and French 2nd Armored Division sat and watched while the Germans escaped the gap. If anyone should be blamed for the failure to close the gap it is senior Allied commanders and not frontline soldiers. Monty was too preoccupied with advancing to the Seine.
@jon1156 just same way they did in sicily,when patton had to do something else than obey a direct order,he should have court martialed for it,but he's too precious to be court martialed,he is a very important commander in US army,tsk....
the blame should be the allies theirselves,they never had true unity and commitment on fighting together,if they do,why do they have to seperate their forces by nationality,tsk...
i don't find it surprising at all, how someone from the US can find this documentary downgrading of their war efforts, given the ones made in their nation have names like "VICTORY" and do nothing other than glorifying the war.

why does the guy keep saying "its entirely possible to walk for hundreds of yards at a time steping on decaying flesh"? he has said it at least 9 times already, and the repitition is just irritating...
to some, it is. to others, it's the way of life, and thereby boring. i grew up studying war, torture, and the like. didn't realize the rule of repetition (as reinforcement) until recently though, which is what the guy is doing.
i like how people 'thumbs down' people for expressing an entirely valid opinion, and promote the opinions of those who chose not to present a point for discussion. i wonder why people would find disfavor in dissonance, when consonance creates power and evil. any idea?

@Spaceweed10 cowards?napoleon?LOL...
you underestimated the french,they were just more loving and artistict than those who prefer the love for pornography and injustices...
though,they call their injustices a form of justice,which is ridiculous...
saying harsh words,is a way of being hypocrite and uneducated who knew nothing at all...

Never realized until now how much "The World at War" played up the British and Canadian efforts and minimuzed US efforts.
