  • Every award speech I seem to go has Glenn Close poking out in the middle of nowhere with a smile on her face, haha.

  • If she was your girlfriend you could die knowing you had kissed one of the loveliest creatures that ever lived on earth:)

  • If Pfeiffer had been nominated for Batman Returns, she would have won. Period!

  • So glad she won the Oscar, she was BRILLIANT in Howard's End, I haven't enjoyed a performance so much in a long time.

  • COOPERFLU

    REGUALATION 16:16

  • Emma absolutley deserves this oscar. She's the only person who got an oscar for acting and writing!

  • Great Catherine Deneuve!!

  • PROFESSOR TRELAWNEY!!!

  • She deserved that Oscar. just watched Howards End and she is great. Emma thompson :)

  • Thompson had the superior performance, but what a WEAK lineup of nominees! Pfeiffer should have been up for "Batman Returns", not "Love Field". And Geena Davis in "A League of Their Own", Sharon Stone in "Basic Instinct", Whoopi Goldberg in "Sister Act" or even Alfre Woodard (not Mary McDonnell) in "Passion Fish" would have been much better nominees.

  • she was the best part in love actually

  • The Brits are always so eloquent and witty in their speeches and they don't cry and thank God every 5 seconds like the yanks do...why is that

  • I love Emma Thompson and I congratulate her for her perfromance, I just wish Michelle Pfeiffer would win an Oscar she deserves one! Her performace in Love Field was probably not as good as the Fabulous Baker Boys, but it was still a great performance! Don't give up Michelle Pfeiffer I have faith in you!

  • WOW!!!...just the idea of Deneuve, Pfeiffer, Sarandon and Thompson being together in one and the same "room" takes my breath away! This must have been a night full of magic in which the whole beauty and classiness of the world was sitting side by side!

  • Best actress in the world! She just oozes out of talent and skill! And she's so frikkin passionate!

  • Her mum was her date to the event, her hubby Kenneth Branagh was in England that night. Supposedly just before the announcement Phyllida whispered to her "You haven't got a snowball's chance in hell" hence her shocked face!

2 of the best actresses on the planet were nominated that year: Emma and Catherine Deneuve! Talk about apples and oranges.

  • I want to know why they played the "Silence of the Lambs" music for her walk to get the oscar....

  • @Jonboi713: it's not silence of the lambs music. it's howard's end.

  • @MsDDiddy if you watch jodie foster or anthony hopkins' speeches from the previous year, its the same music! its the theme from Silence of the Lambs lol

  • pfft are you calling Catherine Deneuve weak? far from it

  • Weak competition that year, though...

  • Her career took a more serious turn with a series of critically acclaimed performances and films, beginning with Howards End (1992), for which she received an Oscar for best actress;

  • I loove Emma and I love her work she's such a terrific actress

    however Catherine should have won

    good for emma.

  • I didn't see Catheine Deneuve or Michelle Pfeiffer's performances, but the other three were definitely Oscar-worthy. Passionfish and Lorenzo's Oil were two wonderful movies and the lead actresses did stellar jobs. Emma is beautiful, funny and smart. Her speech was so eloquent. P.S. I totally hated that format of showing the actress in the corner watching while their clip is shown.

  • @meredithchandler73 I actually like that. At least they showed clips. I hate what they've done in the past two years, when they've had 5 actors come on stage and sing the nominees' praises. It's long, boring, and self-indulgent. Give me a clip any day, even if it shows the actors watching their clips in the corner.

  • My favorite is Mary McDonnell who really shined in her bitchy actress part.

  • Sitting next to Emma you see her mother Phyllida Law, also a very goood actress.

  • @MsSarjen they're very similar, Phyllida was just like Emma when she was younger...and is as talented as her daughter, too...=)

  • A very deserving winner. Subtle, with a lot of depth to her character. An odd decision on the Academy's part, given that it's very low key work!

  • Is not that angelina jolie cant act, because the performances from Gia and Girl, interrupted are amazing, but, unless she is sick, or dying or cying, she is quite... well, just comun, I think emma is in a different category, emma thompson is an Actress absolutely, a. jolie is just a show off of her sadness, thats not acting thats sort of therapy

  • a brilliant actress and writer, so talented and the fact that shes funny and sweet is the cherry on top,

  • Thompson's first major film role was in Richard Curtis's romantic comedy The Tall Guy (1989) co-starring Jeff Goldblum.

  • emma is my favorite acter ^^

  • im related to her! my dads cousin is married to her i have proof!

  • @pinky00pixie2 related to Greg Wise? whoa...lucky!! ^^

  • @simplyfra93 Thanks! x

  • can someone write what emma says is that I speak Spanish and I understand English but sometimes she talks too fast and do not understand some parts of her incredible speech

    thank youuuu

  • @americuxa she says: "oh, good grief... um... ladies and gentlemen... I really don't know how to thank the Academy... not only for this, but also... um... for this view... because it's overwhelming to see so many faces who've entertained and influenced me and thrilled me all my life and... it just takes my breath away... um... and if I could thank you all I would, but I have more pressing debts... to E.M. Forster, for creating Margaret Schlegel... to James Ivory, for asking me to play her...

  • @musicaltheatergeek79 continued: "... to Ismail Merchant for paying me to play her... um... which feels very unnecessary at this moment... actually, I think I might have to give back the money... to Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, for her flawless adaptation... to a superlative cast and crew... to Sony Pictures Classics, for their dedication and commitment... and especially to Sir Anthony Hopkins, for being, like this, the (k)night of my life... (here she makes a pun with "night" and "knight")

  • @musicaltheatergeek79 continued: "... And, um, finally I would like, if I may, to dedicate this Oscar to the heroism and the courage of women, and to hope that it inspires the creation of more true screen heroines to represent them... Thank you so much."

  • @musicaltheatergeek79

    thanks <3<3<3<3 soooooooooooooo much

  • she is one of my favorite actress

she is so beautiful and her talent is big

  • That is so sweet, her costar presenting her the award. I know it just worked out that way because he had won the year before, but very nice nonetheless.

  • THAT is what I call a good speech!

Brief, grateful, a few jokes, she doesn't take herself too seriously, thank you and goodbye, and no crying, thank god!

I'm so annoyed with actors and actresses whose speeches go on and on, are boring and too emotional.

It's just an oscar, you didn't save the world or won the Nobel prize.

Anyway, Emma Thompson funny and classy as always.

  • I have no idea why Emma Thompson is 'shocked' when her name was announced. She was the favourite to win after collecting the NYFCC, the Golden Globe and some other critic awards.

  • When Emma's name is called out, Glenn Close looks like a witch behind her

  • "...for paying me to play her." - LOL! :D

  • i love her

  • What an amazing line up of talent!

  • pfeiffer clearly should have won. but the movie was an outsider

  • Me encanta Emma, es la mejor!! y además le da el Oscar su amigo y cooprotagonista... bueno y mi actor favorito!! Anthony y Emma los mejores!!

  • hopkins said "good evening" preety much in hannibal lecter´s way...

  • I so love Emma Thompson, she was fantastic in Howards End.

  • love u catherine.

  • ahh would love to see Emma and Meryl in a movie together on the big screen would be faboulous they are both the Best

  • @p8alan you may watch Angels in America: it's an HBO series, not a movie, but, however..the part in which they are together is a bit...well...*embarassed blush* (I didn't know anything about that movie when I bought it, I didi just for curiosity and the cast, but it's a very particular one, if you understand me)

  • Catherine!

  • I think emma probably deserved it, but i think susan surandon was an extremely close second?

  • Deneuve the winner for me!!!!!!!

  • hopkins' anouncing is gorgeous!

  • oh my goodness the glasses

  • Catherine ... <3

I totally love this wonderful woman, my Queen ! And this film was so beautiful !

So proud that she's the only french actress nominated !

Catherine ... Je vous Aime !

  • Emma Thompson is my favorite winner from the '90s. Her performance in Howards End is so radiant and subtle and yet very emotional. The moment when she cries and keeps her head on her lips so that no one hears her is unforgettable. The movie is also amazing and I would have given a nomination to Anthony Hopkins too.

  • Susan Sarandon´s performance in that movie was amazing

  • Emma is absolutely, hands down, the best...the best actress, the best speaker at awards...a flawless talent blessed with an open, generous heart and wonderful sense of humor. I wish we lived next door to each other! She's an absolute gem, and I hope they have the sense to make her a DAME one day soon. She deserves it like no other.

  • I second that. Miss Thompson, lest you forget, is also a gifted writer.

  • Catherine Deneuve is hotter then hell.

  • I love Emma, and I'm glad she won, but Catherine Deneuve really had the performance of the year. Where's her Oscar?

Supposedly Emma and Anthony Hopkins had a bet going - that if he opened the envelope and she won, instead of saying her name he was supposed to say "Oh F*ck" and walk off stage. (She never thought she'd actually win).

  • Mary McDonnell should win ...

  • Five amazing women.

  • the money part is SOOOOO funny !!! Luv her :)

  • 2:29 LOL

  • Emma, i think i'm in love! Will you be my valantine? Seriously, the more i see of you, the more i love you <3

  • What an deserving performance of an Oscar. Thompson takes a performance in a film that could easily be passed off as dry and makes it real, straight from the page.

  • Emma's simply the BEST EVER!! love her

  • GOD SHE'S COOL!!!

  • ...But I don't think I like her dress much!

  • Who gives a shit about dresses? It's so superficial and shallow!

Listen to her speech once again. There is something very precious there for a woman like you

  • God, Emma Thompson is a comedy genius. And so sweet to boot.

  • She's so cool!

  • For a minute she didn't realize they said her name.:-)This woman is sweet and excellent.

  • I LOVE EMMA THOMPSON TOO she is great as heck.

and this video made me just start liking susan sarandon for some reason... i guess i've never seen her do any of her good stuff. rocky horror must not count as acting?

  • Emma Thompson is the kind of actress i love to see acting, talking, dancing, singing, etc. She's so sweet and witty, and what a great actress! I also agree that Michelle Pfeiffer deserved a nomination as catwoman in "Batman" instead of Love Field, also Meryl should be nominated instead of Mary McDonnell

  • don't be a butthole, you don't know what it feels like to up there. or to be modest like emma thompson, i suppose...

  • Emma Thompson is so eloquent and intelligent and talented and witty. If Emma Thompson is in a movie, that's the sort of movie I watch without question. Can't even compare to some peolple who call themselves Hollywood "stars" who can't act... like Julia Roberts and Angelina Jolie

  • @isakdinesen Take Angelina Jolie out of that equation (she can act). How about Reese Witherspoon and Gwyneth Paltrow instead? They're the most overrated actors on the planet.

  • @PadrethePio yes she can, the only bad bad thing about Anjelina Jolie is... brad pitt jaja

  • @isakdinesen I Disagree for that Last Part...Why Did Julia Roberts win Best Actress in Leading Role for Erin Brockovich in 2000? Why Did Angelina Jolie win Best Actress in Supporting Role for Girl, Interrupsted in 1999?

  • @andrewdisney1 Actually Julia Roberts just stole that Oscar from Ellen Burstyn in 2000. She wasn't really the BEST that year.

As for Angelina Jolie, I'm still doubtful of her capabilities as an actress, but her Oscar for Girl, Interrupted was well deserved

  • @jamietotz I really don't think that Julia Roberts can "steal" an Oscar...the academy thought she deserved it and she did.

  • @andrewdisney1 LOL I'm not speaking in the literally. Go see Requiem for a Dream, you might change your mind :)

  • @jamietotz LOL Ik Ik! :) I will...:)

  • @isakdinesen

I agree with you on Emma Thompson, but not on what you said about Julia and Angelina, they are in the same league imo

  • Oh, she's so wonderfully natural and smart. She was genuinely baffled when the name which was read out turned out to be hers. And her mother could be spotted beside her. Their resemblance to each other is remarkable.

  • I find myself embarrased to admit I've only seen Howards End and it did look like it was a very strong year, but I do think their should have been recognition for Meryl Streep and Sharon Stone, too.

  • Those of you who think Miss Thompson should get the O.B.E. and be called 'Dame Emma', RAISE YOUR HAND.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS.

  • raising my hand!

    no both my hands!!!

    lol

  • @Juliaflo Well, an OBE isnt a Damehood. It is two ranks lower actually, and it doesnt entitle you to use Dame before your name. But despite your ignorance i agree with your sentiments, i think Emma will, if she hasnt already, be offered the title, but wether she will accept it or not is a whole other question. Im not sure she agrees with what the British Empire represents, so who knows. Shes brilliant either way.

  • @Juliaflo You only use the title Dame if you have DBE or GBE status.

  • I love Meryl, and Death Becomes Her is one of my favourite films... but I find the idea that she deserved an Oscar nom over McDonnell for Passion Fish absolutely ridiculous.

  • She's amazing!!

  • This is how I was named! It's so cool to finally see it! My parents were deciding between emma and emily and they said if she won I would be emma and alas, I am! =D

  • Emma Thompson, you are awesome!

  • Great Speech!

  • Tell that to the Academy cunt, not me.

  • Nobody beats Emma Thompson in period films...she's just extraordinary...Meryl and Emma are the best actresses I've seen on film!!!!!!!!

  • emma thompson is a bloody legend

  • sod all of you Jodie/Emma fanboys! Marking down my pro Michelle comments. You reek of bias!

  • Emma's an amazing actress,truly amazing :] <3

  • Go Emma!!! She's such a cool and classy person!

  • What a graceful acceptance speech!

  • She's amazing!!

  • Wow - what an amazing year and what a wonderful bunch of nominees!

  • Emma Thompson is such an amazing actress! I loved her in Howard's end. She's been in so many of my favorite movies!

  • Vanessa Regrave look so happy for Emma.

  • Thompson was magnificent and she should've won for Sense and Sensibility too!!

  • She did win one for Sense and Sensibility but not for best actress. I think winning best adaptation probably meant a little more to her then though.

  • she never fails to make me smile.

  • I completely agree, Deneuve is fantastic and was brilliant in that role, it would have been nice if she had got it. But it was an extremely strong year with excellent performances, so much so that when I looked at the nominees I kind of felt like OMG, good I don't have to decide. :) Emma Thompson was really even better in Remains (my all-time favourite both in book and on film), but that came next year, so they couldn't know. :)

  • Yeah she was brilliant in The Remains Of The Day. She is the period drama queen in my opinion, what with Howards End, Remains and Sense and Sensibility.

  • With all my respect to Ms. Thompson (one of the best actresses ever), Catherine Deneuve (also one of the best actresses ever) should've won the Oscar back in 1993 for her astonishing role in "Indochine". The Oscar for Emma Thompson would be better given for her role in "The Remains of the Day".

  • I quite agree. I'm glad ET is getting back to period dramas with Brideshead Revisted. (I love her in all her movies though.)

  • I just deeply in love with Anthony Hopkins:-)

  • I realy liked howards end but i thought she was much better in remains of the day which she didnt win an oscar for?, she was just amazing in sence and sensibility though. Michelle pfeiffer was great in the fabulous baker boys I think she won a bafta for that.

  • Michelle won the bafta for DANGEROUS LIAISONS.She won the golden globe for THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS.

  • oh no someone took down Jodie Foster's speech for Silence of the Lambs. Someone put it back up along with her great speech for the Accused.

  • As much as i love Emma,Michelle should have won that oscar hands down!

  • hell no. Michelle barely deserved a nomination! For Love Field? Please. Whereas I would rank Emma in Howard's End as one of my favorite female perofrmances ever Michelle Pfeiffer in Love Field would never even pop into my head.

  • Comment removed

  • I disagree with that. Just because she's Catherine Deneuve doesn't mean she deserves to win THAT year. And I think Emma's a better actress. Her perofrmance in Howard's End was pitch perfect. And her perofrmances in Remains of the Day and Sense and Sensibility moving.

  • I totally agree with you, Catherine should have won the Oscar for Indochina. It's was a most emotional role and Cath is one of the best European actress. I respect Emma but in fact she didn't deserve this Oscar.

  • in your opinion

  • thank you for posting this!I'm downloading it right now,in case one of these days somebody's going to remove this!!

  • Emma <3

  • Emma is the best actress in the world!!!

  • Emma deserved that man. She is such a great actress. I lvoe to watch her in HOward's End-she owned that movie and Remains of the Day she was amazing. Susan was boring and didn't give any performance that was special or different from her other ones. Emma is the best.

  • I believe that Susan Sarandon should have won the award, it was a really dramatic role and she played it well

  • Deneuve should have won...

  • isn't that the theme from silence of the lambs when thompson walks on stage? lolol

  • Such a classy speech. Her clip was a little short, though. Michelle Pfeiffer also looks understandably disappointed that the clip they used wasn't longer/better. Mary McDonnell looks like a good sport.

  • I love Emma Thompson and am so happy to finally of found this clip...thanks :D

  • I LOVE Emma reaction. You can see her saying 'What?' I love Emma.

  • LOL. Yeah, it's like "Oh my god!". Glenn Close looks very happy in the back!

  • AMEN! she is my hero!

  • I love Emma Thompson, she RULES!!!!!!!!!

  • Have you got the video when Pacino wins his Oscar?

  • Emma Thompson ALL the way. She deserved it for Remains of The Day also ...

  • Please, only someone who didn't watch Holly Hunter in The Piano would think Emma Thompson deserved to win for The Remains Of The Day.

  • I watched Piano and it was great and Holly was great, but for me, remains of the Day was better and Emma Thompson was better. On the other hand, in 1993 everybody expected Emma to win and one critic told she was way above everybody, but I disagree. Mary McDonnell and Susan Sarandon IMHO were just as good as Emma, and both would have deserved to win.

  • Pfeiffer only got nominated when it was a weak year for best actress. She was not that good. PFeiffer fans think she is so great just because she's pretty and a little udnerrated but she's not on the level of actresses like Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster and yes Emma Thompson.

  • no way do I think she is better than Jodie. Jodie at 12 years old is better than Michelle! lol. And no way is she as great as Meryl. She's good in some quirky parts but come on she's never given a WOW performance and Jodie, Meryl and Emma can reach emotional levels in their performances that Michelle just can't. Whenever she is yelling or crying in a film it's not convincing and I'm not touched. But when Jodie, Meryl and Emma cry in films I am touched and moved by them.

  • fine, but not this performance.

  • whatever

  • How is Michelle Pfeiffer more versatile than Jodie Foster? Please, as if Michelle Pfeiffer could play a role like Jodie Foster in Nell or The Accused.

  • lol @ "Michelle Pfeiffer deserved a nomination for Batman Returns".

The only time Michelle Pfeiffer was snubbed and deserved to be there was in 1994 for The Age Of Innocence, only an idiot would think she deserved an Oscar nomination for playing Catwoman.

  • Oh really? I had no idea that Catwoman without her outfit was a completely different character, are you stupid? Selina Kyle = Catwoman, idiot.
