Firstly, it's not racist to say "she must have some black in her family." If anything, that's saying black people sing incredibly well and so does Kelly Clarkson.

Secondly, there was no audience back in those days for the early stages. It was only in the later seasons, when they realised how popular the show was/could be, that they made them live.
