Another thing, as i am beginner it might be rude for some that i say what im about to say, but i say it anyway. i disagree that in meditation you should be full aware, i think it's rather, the opposite. after all isn't it all about floating in consciousness? also when i started i was trying really hard not to think, but then i realized it was wrong, because while trying not to think too hard i was actually making the whole thing difficult for myself. so i thought i let thoughts pass by.
i just started practising regulary meditation few months ago and just now i feel like im getting somewhere. but what has crossed my mind is that, is there any BAD effects caused by meditation? maybe it's a silly question, but since i have very low blood pressure and i have heard meditation affects also blood pressure. so could this be a problem?
@VEHEMENTBLACK There are different definitions for meditation but I think it basically just means relaxing the mind..it's nothing to fear. Most people like to sit or lie quietly when they meditate but anything you do that relaxes your mind is meditation...mowing the lawn and working in the garden used to be meditative for me because I got into a "zone" where I simply felt relaxed and at ease with life and the universe
Once I could watch this video without getting distracted, I got a lot out of it... Also, regarding a comment by another saying that you should just take your own path with meditation, I really think that in our society we undervalue the teacher and decide to do things for ourselves. But there is a lot to be taken by one who is practiced in a field, specialized to put it another way.
Is it that you don't necessarily mean the invention of meditation is natural but when practicing it, it brings your mind in harmony with nature and so in this way meditation is natural?
@yuttadhammo Your videos are extremely concise and informative and I thank you for them. However, I've always found it difficult to know when "noting" is inappropriate. For example, as a musician, when performing/improvising it is very important to get extremely absorbed in the music being played, and it seems that continuing to note like this would hinder my performance. It is your opinion that being this absorbed in an activity is dangerous or can be considered clinging? Thank you again!
I like this video, but to tell you the truth this video is conditioning the mind. In order to meditate properly, one should not condition the mind. They should uncondition the mind. Do not get too caught up watching videos like this. Spend more time doing the ACTUAL meditation itself. Trust me. That is how I have raised my vibrational frequency to a much higher level.
@MrSuspiciousPerson I found what you are saying is really true. I listened to a lot of videos, books myself before. It makes me rather "confused". I started to feel the benefit of meditation when I started to listen to myself. I follow my own "needs" at the time. But, the video is good :)
i dont like this idea of not attaching to anything, i mean, what about people, close friends, your lovers, your family, i mean of course you want to feel attached to them?
@Goldenman1920 sometimes it's best to break away from people and to think of yourself. If you don't, you can become lost, "me" time, is always needed. And if "me" time goes away, social time will begin to diminish.
Thank you, yuttadhammo. I'm sure I'll refer to this series of videos whenever I feel I'm having difficulty... and hopefully you won't mind a curious, and perhaps dumb?, question or two. I know I don't fully understand, but I feel so much closer now. Thank you again, yuttadhammo. <3
@Mosixman the problem with the use of drugs is that it is more conditioned than meditation..... the affects of the drug depends on the mental state of the user at the time, the environment in wich its used, and the feelings of others around you while using... using drugs you can delude the mind and lose complete controll of it.... wheras meditation is not affected by external conditioning with proper cultivation.. i.e. there are alot of distractions to be had using psychadellic drugs.

U think you the only one is using drug, smoking weed, pot ? I went through all those shat. I used to do things that I didn't give a F what people think about me.But there one day,I found this line of teaching " What you are now, was done by you in the past, only this moment that you can change for the better of u in today and tomorrow". From there I look into Buddha's Teachings, I started straighting myself up.There is no excuse, no one hold the responsible for your action beside yourself
I thought your explanation of your meditation approach was interesting. Usually I have just heard people saying you need to just focus on the breath and watch thoughts come and go, but I thought your idea of labelling what you notice sounded like it would help you be in the moment better. I was a bit confused between 2 and 4 though - you said 2 (feelings) could include happiness or calmness, and 4 (mental states), things like feeling angry and stressed - they seem like similar things to me.
Or is it actually all win win and your lifestyle gives great inner happiness, that doesn't need expressing with a lot of outward show, while taking away the inner suffering? Also isn't it easier to be calm if you are living a simple community life in peaceful surroundings etc, as opposed to someone with a lot of responsibilities or a stressful job or family life, and who commutes on a crowded subway each day and so on?
You come across as very calm and gentle; but is that the goal - to be peaceful and gentle and perhaps somewhat detached all the time? I find it a stumbling block in Buddhism that strong emotions and attachments are seen as bad, as they seem to me so much a part of being a human being. But then suffering seems a common part of it too... Is that the choice - be calm and detached and suffer mentally less, or experience stronger lows, but perhaps stronger highs as well by just being an average joe?
The fat buddhas you are thinking of are a Chinese tradition and they don't even represent the historical Buddha, Gautama. He is traditionally represented as slim, and with curly hair rising into a topknot.
Awesome Video man, I'm really enjoy meditation but i hate all the bullshit mystic spiritual psuedo sceince crap that people attach to it. Like Prayer is really useful regardless of God, taking time out to reflect upon your decisions and actions, meditation for me is equally as useful, taking time out to just enjoy being.
@yuttadhammo i first geat videos .i started meditation like 3 to 4 week a go.and i wonder if its normal wend i finish my meditation my head feel real heavy.just wondering if its normal.
@mathewp80 well, best thing is to try it, but I just wanted to add that I know what you are going through and I wish to advise you not to give it up quick if it doesn't show results right away. It might be hard at the beginning, but what you can get out of meditation is priceless. everyone who says it isn't, hasn't really meditated. And about weed... well, that's up to you. If used wisely it could even help you understand somethings, but don't try to meditate while high, it might be misleading
@mathewp80 It's your life, don't make an excuse on the path of life u are walking on rite now. What's the purpose of being alive in your own freedom. No one force you to do anything. It's your life, no one cares if you hate life or love it, it's you owe to yourself the true meaning of being human, but not to people around you or anyone else. " Every human being is the author of his health of disease" U r a mental sick person, U need to realize it.
@mathewp80 i can't tell you if i've had as much drama in my life as you have, but i don't think that meditating could hurt. i think that anytime you take the chance to sit down and think about what you have done or plan to do is time well spent. don't be angry with me, but i don't think you should blame other people for the things that have happened in your life. i don't think the things that happen to us should be pinned on ourselves or others. it's easiest to believe things just happen.
@mathewp80 I grew up without a father, my mom had to raise me and my brothers, we didn't get to go to school when we were little. Most of my childhood I was a street boy, I was abused by my old brother. I got beated up everyday, just because we have difference father. I work hard to keep my stomatch full, but that was never happen to me. Many times, I ate food that people give to dogs. There more hard shat expriences in life that I went throught, Now who do I blame for all these ?
hello my friend my anme is jeff and i would like to start by saying thank you very much for helping so many people along with myself.i have uncovered within myself new meaning for my meditation practice and have found a new way to see.
i have a question for you, about an experence i come across durring me practice.I find that large amounts of heat which then turn to sweat accumulates near my navel. am i to mearly let this sensation be or may i focus my attention to this experence?
i am right now laying in my bed. Time reads 5:40am. Peaceful and curious of finding out more of this meditation practice. I love to feel inner beauty and love. Free from anxiety and worries. Pain is no longer a part of me, but it will return. Meditation is my escape.
Hi. I have psychic problems, personality disorder and depression. I have been in psychotherapy for 5 years and nothing changed. Can meditation help me? I´m really in despair.
What religion are you? He doesn't look like what I though these guys look like. I dont mean that in a bad way. He looks like he could be one of my friends.
wow your method of explaining and teaching really moves me for lack of a better word. It really strikes a chord with me so I thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you so much for your videos. I look forward to beginning my practice. I have attempted meditation before, but always found my thoughts straying, but the way you present it makes sense to me. Thank you
Fantastic Series of Video. You have explained it so well, because you have made things so simple and uncomplicated the concept of meditation.
I am also glad that you have not put any Guru or someone onto a pedestal, and have simply explained it as a very personal practice, where you grow on your own.
Also is this a form of Vipassana? I was planning to take a course.
@vidurchhabra Thank you for your feedback. Yes, it is Vipassana based on the four foundations of mindfulness. This technique is commonly known as the "Mahasi Sayadaw" method, after a prolific teacher of the same name from Burma, in case you are looking for similar meditation practise near you.
I went 23 years looking for the Truth in reality. I found out that I was expecting it to be out of reach, so my reality reflected that belief and became "out of reach". When I FLIPPED that belief, it became very simple and I was FULL. I then saw that these things like meditation require INTENTION and BELIEF to be effective, just like hypnosis, and every other form of psyche interaction. They are wonderfully effective because I KNOW they will be. "Hope" is not the way. Truth is THE way. accept :)
hi...congratulations it is a great serie of instructive videos. I would like to ask: making a label of what i am thinking is just that... labeling? or it refers to isolate the thinking in orther to work with it and find conclusions? if my question is not clear i can add that i pretend to use meditation to create a deep state of concentration i wich i can analize and find conclusions...does meditation can be useful to do this?....i would be realy glad if yo answer my doubts...
@yuttadhammo Ahhh, you are removing the subcategories, and raising up a level, like program files, and directories, you are removing the human programing or leaving them behind to reach the one state of i am?
@StrRecord - And so the ego speaks again. You speak of Jesus in the same manner as one would root for a sports team.
This is a fine example of why Christianity leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Its all about imposing belief on others and putting people down who dont believe as you believe.
yutta,i have some guestion to ask u.is it possible to use any kind of cloth for meditation?and is it possible meditate anywhere? and my last question is...what are the needs when u are above to start meditation? i will be gladful of u if u answer all my question.thank a lolt.
@StrRecord He is no idol he is prophet like Jesus, Muhamed... And you just got pwned by yuttadhammo. I am not bhudist but I still find it is a very fascinating religion :)
@yuttadhammo your right. i have anouther qestion. the state your trying to reach is something like were you focus on your breath to the point were your hardley breathinng. Is it normal if i can do this almost instanley? I also get a funny feeling in the bridge of my nose and forehead when i reach this state, is that normal?
@yuttadhammo do u worship him i searched it up and it said u dont beleave him as a god he teaches the gods or something.u live in a nice place looks very calm
i am a thai buddhist monk myself at this moment and im really proud and appreciate for what you're doing and show these people for what you know, because most people dont know whats going on they think its some kind of religions but its effect to our everyday life.....try it people and give him some respect.
How can the practice of mediation be done in conjunction with everyday family life? Not to have an attchement to a feeling like happiness , for example, seems imposible when this is often a shared experience. I don't understand how to use mantra when we are often surrounded in our daily lives. It seems that to sit alone in a room a few times each day is not enough.
@lexidougal My work was stressful,I had to make very critical decisions all the time.I was short temper and got angry a lot.I had 3 days of meditation retreat (Vipassana). After a few weeks of practice,I was a different person.I know when anger comes so I can deal with it.I am more at peace with myself . My family and coworkers are very happy .I only spend 15-20 min meditate quietly before my bed time.I am sure that any body can spare this much time for him/her self.
I've never delved into this sort of thing before and unlike the other's (as I see the comments) I found this to be helpful to me. Your use of language is wonderful and I thank you for teaching me and I thank you for the videos to come.
@crywolf30 How do you dress? Shaving my head and dressing in a simple robe is about as simple and easy a life I can think of; a real support for the meditation practice as well.
@yuttadhammo I didn't say there was anything wrong with it, I just implied that since you are from the western world you wouldn't be studying buddha. Sorry
@yuttadhammo nice answer but that is also attachment. A t-tshirt and a good pair of jeans and a clean short hair are equally simple. Anyway simple is not opposite to complex really because this difference is in your mind and it is not real so you can dress anyway you like if your mind is really free.
@newcruiser Do you not realize that this man is a monk? The traditions of the robes and bald head have been passed down for generations for a good purpose. The purpose as he said it exactly. And no, a t-shirt and jeans are not equally simple at all and even so, they're not even comfortable. I've never seen anyone meditate in jeans. The point is, if you want to meditate then listen to his words. If you do not, then go away.
@newcruiser and you do not chose a bald head and a robe because you enjoy wearing these things. When I get my hair cut, that is a single hair cut that I enjoy having above all others. I then notice and consider the status of my hair until the next time I get it cut. For him to have to have a bald head, hair length is simply no longer considered.
without the religious dogma? lol. I am looking at your clothes right now and your shaven head. Don't follow religion. Be yourself. BE the meditation itself!
@KarameloKaramelo You'd rather I were naked and unkempt, I suppose? Being yourself is easy, the basest idiot can do as much... true religion is the path to freedom from suffering. Why be anything at all?
Another thing, as i am beginner it might be rude for some that i say what im about to say, but i say it anyway. i disagree that in meditation you should be full aware, i think it's rather, the opposite. after all isn't it all about floating in consciousness? also when i started i was trying really hard not to think, but then i realized it was wrong, because while trying not to think too hard i was actually making the whole thing difficult for myself. so i thought i let thoughts pass by.

I was a bit confused between 2 and 4 though - you said 2 (feelings) could include happiness or calmness, and 4 (mental states), things like feeling angry and stressed - they seem like similar things to me.
oliveranthonyrowland 11 months ago
If we all meditated and were very peaceful though, we'd probably have no drama, rock music, opera, football, etc...
oliveranthonyrowland 11 months ago
Or is it actually all win win and your lifestyle gives great inner happiness, that doesn't need expressing with a lot of outward show, while taking away the inner suffering? Also isn't it easier to be calm if you are living a simple community life in peaceful surroundings etc, as opposed to someone with a lot of responsibilities or a stressful job or family life, and who commutes on a crowded subway each day and so on?
oliveranthonyrowland 11 months ago
You come across as very calm and gentle; but is that the goal - to be peaceful and gentle and perhaps somewhat detached all the time? I find it a stumbling block in Buddhism that strong emotions and attachments are seen as bad, as they seem to me so much a part of being a human being. But then suffering seems a common part of it too... Is that the choice - be calm and detached and suffer mentally less, or experience stronger lows, but perhaps stronger highs as well by just being an average joe?
oliveranthonyrowland 11 months ago
@StrRecord
The fat buddhas you are thinking of are a Chinese tradition and they don't even represent the historical Buddha, Gautama. He is traditionally represented as slim, and with curly hair rising into a topknot.

I have a question... what camera do you use? The picture quality is extremely sharp and I wanted to know if the camera was within my price range.

Thanks for a great Video

@mathewp80 well, best thing is to try it, but I just wanted to add that I know what you are going through and I wish to advise you not to give it up quick if it doesn't show results right away. It might be hard at the beginning, but what you can get out of meditation is priceless. everyone who says it isn't, hasn't really meditated. And about weed... well, that's up to you. If used wisely it could even help you understand somethings, but don't try to meditate while high, it might be misleading
chof09 1 year ago

ChelseaBobcat 10 months ago
@mathewp80 I grew up without a father, my mom had to raise me and my brothers, we didn't get to go to school when we were little. Most of my childhood I was a street boy, I was abused by my old brother. I got beated up everyday, just because we have difference father. I work hard to keep my stomatch full, but that was never happen to me. Many times, I ate food that people give to dogs. There more hard shat expriences in life that I went throught, Now who do I blame for all these ?

hello my friend my anme is jeff and i would like to start by saying thank you very much for helping so many people along with myself.i have uncovered within myself new meaning for my meditation practice and have found a new way to see.
i have a question for you, about an experence i come across durring me practice.I find that large amounts of heat which then turn to sweat accumulates near my navel. am i to mearly let this sensation be or may i focus my attention to this experence?

these videos are inspirational and help us gain more of an awareness, understanding, and control over a lot of variations in our perceptions -
...perceptions which otherwise might have set us back or thwarted our efforts in our meditation experience.
And remember: “We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” ~Albert Einstein
So it's always good to keep an open mind to new ideas and information and new ways of doing things.

I was planning to take a course.
vidurchhabra 1 year ago 16

@Ileric making a label is reminding yourself of the nature of the experience, rather than judging it.

@StrRecord - And so the ego speaks again. You speak of Jesus in the same manner as one would root for a sports team.
This is a fine example of why Christianity leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Its all about imposing belief on others and putting people down who dont believe as you believe.

How can the practice of mediation be done in conjunction with everyday family life? Not to have an attchement to a feeling like happiness , for example, seems imposible when this is often a shared experience. I don't understand how to use mantra when we are often surrounded in our daily lives. It seems that to sit alone in a room a few times each day is not enough.
lexidougal 1 year ago
@lexidougal My work was stressful,I had to make very critical decisions all the time.I was short temper and got angry a lot.I had 3 days of meditation retreat (Vipassana). After a few weeks of practice,I was a different person.I know when anger comes so I can deal with it.I am more at peace with myself . My family and coworkers are very happy .I only spend 15-20 min meditate quietly before my bed time.I am sure that any body can spare this much time for him/her self.

why are you dressed as a monk? surely you know you don't get enlightened faster by shaving your head and dressing in orange?
crywolf30 1 year ago
@crywolf30 How do you dress? Shaving my head and dressing in a simple robe is about as simple and easy a life I can think of; a real support for the meditation practice as well.
yuttadhammo 1 year ago 25
@yuttadhammo I didn't say there was anything wrong with it, I just implied that since you are from the western world you wouldn't be studying buddha. Sorry
crywolf30 1 year ago
@yuttadhammo nice answer but that is also attachment. A t-tshirt and a good pair of jeans and a clean short hair are equally simple. Anyway simple is not opposite to complex really because this difference is in your mind and it is not real so you can dress anyway you like if your mind is really free.
newcruiser 1 year ago
@newcruiser Do you not realize that this man is a monk? The traditions of the robes and bald head have been passed down for generations for a good purpose. The purpose as he said it exactly. And no, a t-shirt and jeans are not equally simple at all and even so, they're not even comfortable. I've never seen anyone meditate in jeans. The point is, if you want to meditate then listen to his words. If you do not, then go away.
thejugglenaut91 1 year ago
@newcruiser and you do not chose a bald head and a robe because you enjoy wearing these things. When I get my hair cut, that is a single hair cut that I enjoy having above all others. I then notice and consider the status of my hair until the next time I get it cut. For him to have to have a bald head, hair length is simply no longer considered.
