Search for the Jimmy Smith 1965 Documentary - just posted few weeks ago, worth checking out. It's from his arrival in Germany, shots at his PA home, in the studio...a real dude if there ever was one!
I need this organ. Id give anything to have one. Not sure if you know theres another video on here that gives you a way to hack your xk to give you more voices its alot better than your average keyboard
Totally enjoyed that. Love that organ sound. And if I understand right, this is a digital board that simulates accurately the tonewheel sound, with a Leslie simulation as well?
very well done, im organ and lord player too, and i must say u do it correctly. only thing is that u move like a classic piano player, i can see you took many classic lessons! now, you know this by heart, but would be you able to solo in F ( or other keys) using blue notes and scales?? good job for this m8!
What do you mean by....'only thing is you move like classic piano player', .....is being classically trained detrimental to organ/blues/rock/jazz playing? I don't think so...it's essential! You can't play his solo's well without good fingering/substitutions etc. Lord is obviously classically trained and heavily influenced by Bach, Beethoven, Elgar etc. Yes I can solo and improvise in all keys using blues scales and modes, but unfortunately not to the standard of The Man
@geezkeys yea that's true it was just my thought! It is correct to start from classic, I took 5 years of classic lessons (SO boring) but it helps a lot for scales and things.
What i meant , is that the classical address (or stance, or just the way you keep ur arm and move your hands) is remained on you. It's not a bad thing, but it just looked weird to see a classical hand posture playing Lord's rock ^^
I love the sound of the XK3c ... and very good playing too! good feeling and timing for this solo that is really not easy!!! congrats ... keep rockin' .. greetz from Brazil!
Yep...this is THE greatest "organ" solo of all-time. One reason I took up keyboards when I was young. Uriah Heep and the Doors were also had the best keyboards.
@RapIsDeadly man, when u say "greatest" and Best" it mean that IT IS the one... Im a big DP fun and Lord is my lord and i play organ and piano since when im 7 yrs old, and i can tell u that Lord made other better soloes in live versions, did u see every DP live version? i didnt either, but i listened to many many songs in different versions, and some soloes are just amazing!! Uriah Heep organ player is very good, but Lord is the one, cant be compared to others.
I've heard most of Deep Purple's live stuff and most of Jon Lord's live solo's are awesome, but I wouldn't say they're necessarily better than this one. Even his studio solo's are 'live', recorded in 1 or 2 takes. It is of course down to personal opinion, and I think for phrasing and melody this is just the dogs dangly's! One of my favourite live solo's is when he played with The Hoochie Coochie Men, Live at the Basement.....Who's Been Talkin' & Green Onions.
You can get a new XK3c for something between 2200 to 2500 dollars, depending on where you buy it. The old B3's that are still in good condition are pretty rare - you could expect anything from 6000 to over 10,000 dollars (with a Leslie cabinet).
Personally I'd go for the XK-series, seeing as it's much easier to move (your roadies won't quit on you :D) and it has virtually the same sound as the old Hammonds if you take the time to tweak the settings as you go.
@geezkeys Thanks a lot for this brilliant solo - plus the slow version which gives me more of a chance to pick up the keys ;=) If you would still share the sheets this would be of further help. Best wishes - Rob / robnew@bluewin.ch
If you've picked taht out yourself that is a brilliant skill u got yourself!! Any chance of it being written down in music?? And by the way what will really give it the iceing on the cake is to 'pull out all the stops' at 0: 32 ; ) thanks.
We need Hammond organ back in rock music. Heck we need rock music back for that matter.

PERFECT!! :D
(only, you should always take the Leslie on "Break", and when you take it on "Fast", you should turn up the distortion... however, very good!)
