I think YouTube changed the requirements, they aren't as nitpicky anymore about bitrate or anything, all you need is the proper resolution and you're good to go. 360+ = 360p, 480+ = 480p etc.
You don't mention to convert to a wmv or mp4. Just tried to upload file as the original edited avi and youtube says, failed to upload and convert file.

@HipHopBoston if you're going for max audio quality, I recommend either Apple lossless AAC for the sound, or upload an AVI with uncompressed audio. This way it gets compressed only once, by YouTube, instead of an extra time by you.
If you own any type of audio program such as Audacity that was mentioned, be sure to use an Equalizer on the audio, bump up the high end, and then save as MP3. It makes the audio quality more crisp and clear for your productions.
Right on, that's actually how I do the sound for my videos. I export a WAV from Vegas, then while the video is rendering I fine tune in Audacity. From there, I save as a WAV (MP3 would cause the quality so suffer a little more) and put it all together again with VirtualDubMod.

on 3:52 on the vid on the blog it shows a HQ option but i do not have that on any video. and i go to my friends computer and he has it on most of the videos and if i am not mistaken all of them too. how do u get that option
You have to run 2 passes for it to work. The 2nd (nth in this case) pass is based on statistics gathered from the 1st pass. If you don't want to wait, you can try one of the single pass methods. With single pass, you can either lose quality compared to a 2 pass encode, or get unpredictable file sizes. CRF is pretty good, but you'll have to experiment to find what meets your needs.

The trick is pretty simple and I've had very good results spoofing HQ and widescreen. Yes, you have to fool YT to get good quality.

If your video is poor, and audio poor, (muddy, no stereo) your video was processed in the lowest quality by YT. Try adding a 5 second motion-heavy intro to your videos as YT scans the first part of each video to determine the quality it THINKS your video should appear as.
They've increased the quality of the normal videos. It's AVC within a flash container, which is pretty much the same as the MP4 (&fmt=18) version. I sure hope they go back and make the older videos look better.

You must run VirtualDub.exe from the same folder as all the other files in the zip, including corona.dll. Click extract all, put them somewhere on your computer, and run the exe from there.
It doesn't guarantee the link with the new changes, but the normal quality videos have improved quality so it's not as big of a deal. Recommendations: for 4:3 (not widescreen) you can choose 480x360, 640x480; for widescreen 640x360, 720x404, 852x480, 1280x720(HD).
My newest video I have it as 700x480 like I always have and for some reason, I never got the high quality option. For months I have been using the same exact settings and never had a problem until my latest video which I uploaded about 5 days ago.
They have increased the quality of the normal videos, so the HQ link is less relevant. One thing I have noticed though is: right after you upload and it first goes live, it looks horrible. I suspect this is because to avoid delays they create a fast temporary but not so pretty looking version. Once the better processed version is done, that replaces the yucky one you saw before. So wait a bit and see if it improves.
I hope they have fixed whatever they tried to fix earlier this month. During my testing, I saw three different levels of quality for "Normal". The lowest had poor video and no stereo. The second had good video and stereo, and the third was good video, stereo and wide screen.
I was able to create wide screen (no bars on the sides) with my 5 second "spoofing intro" that was resized to 1280 x1024. I wish they had a button to select what quality you want when you upload! Crazy!
Derek I must say that youtube is really pissing me off lately... After around 2 weeks of work with a couple other guys, we figured out how to get HQ to show up. Search "Youtube High Quality Mystery" and hopefully this will help you. Youtube scans the first part of your video and determines if it should be HQ, even if you meet the req.s, your videos may still show up "normal". I think this may help you.

For two pass encoding, you must run "2 pass 1st pass," followed by "2 pass Nth pass." The first pass gathers statistics but has no useable video. Alternatively, you can experiment with some of the single pass modes.
Hi, I tried to do my videos at 480x360 but it failed miserably, the quality was bad. Now I am doing it at 640x480 but it can still use a pinch. I am receiving a few error messages in the log after I save as the "nth pass"

Many of us use Movie Maker. I save my videos as "best quality for playback.." and it worked fine. However, and I don't know why, the last week or so, I have not been able to get ANY of my videos in HQ and I am doing everything exactly the same way I always have. I'm very frustrated with YT.
I thought I was the only one. I use vista, and when I publish videos as the widescreen 16:9 DVD Quality, youtube used to convert the videos to include the "watch in high quality" option. However, recently youtube is not giving me the "watch in high quality" option anymore, even though I still exported and uploaded my movies in the same way! Very weird...
It looks like the YT bug that was preventing many of us from posting HQ video is being resolved. Almost all my videos uploaded in the last 24 hrs are showing in HQ. I posted over 50 "test" videos in the last week and NONE of them showed up in HQ. (edited with Movie Maker) Hang in there, it should be working normally again soon.

That's HD - not HQ. HD is easy - assuming you have widescreen footage, resize to 1280x720. HQ is only used in a minority of cases.

I asked her about HQ and she gave me this specs and I copyied them here... didnt even pay attention on HD :( lol... maybe it's true, that you have to make some motion with text in first 5 seconds... I am doing it right now, with one of my videos, that video didnt got HQ first time, without that text... so if I get it now... I will tell you ;)

I'm not trying to promote myself here, but please go to my "high quality spoofing" videos if you need help. PM me if you like. Believe me, I was pulling my hair out too. The trick is pretty simple and I've had very good results spoofing HQ and widescreen. Yes, you have to fool YT to get good quality.

Because I've always used

mp3 128 kbps
I've always been using that setting and my video never shows for watch in high quality, what is the newest settings?

If your video is poor, and audio poor, (muddy, no stereo) your video was processed in the lowest quality by YT. Try adding a 5 second motion-heavy intro to your videos as YT scans the first part of each video to determine the quality it THINKS your video should appear as.

They've increased the quality of the normal videos. It's AVC within a flash container, which is pretty much the same as the MP4 (&fmt=18) version. I sure hope they go back and make the older videos look better.

How come Virtual dub mod doesn't work? It says corona.dll was not found. What does that mean? and i tried installing it again, but the same thing keeps popping up. please reply back. thanks

You must run VirtualDub.exe from the same folder as all the other files in the zip, including corona.dll. Click extract all, put them somewhere on your computer, and run the exe from there.

It doesn't guarantee the link with the new changes, but the normal quality videos have improved quality so it's not as big of a deal. Recommendations: for 4:3 (not widescreen) you can choose 480x360, 640x480; for widescreen 640x360, 720x404, 852x480, 1280x720(HD).

My newest video I have it as 700x480 like I always have and for some reason, I never got the high quality option. For months I have been using the same exact settings and never had a problem until my latest video which I uploaded about 5 days ago.

They have increased the quality of the normal videos, so the HQ link is less relevant. One thing I have noticed though is: right after you upload and it first goes live, it looks horrible. I suspect this is because to avoid delays they create a fast temporary but not so pretty looking version. Once the better processed version is done, that replaces the yucky one you saw before. So wait a bit and see if it improves.

I hope they have fixed whatever they tried to fix earlier this month. During my testing, I saw three different levels of quality for "Normal". The lowest had poor video and no stereo. The second had good video and stereo, and the third was good video, stereo and wide screen.
I was able to create wide screen (no bars on the sides) with my 5 second "spoofing intro" that was resized to 1280 x1024. I wish they had a button to select what quality you want when you upload! Crazy!

Derek I must say that youtube is really pissing me off lately... They always removing, than puting back, than removing, than puting back that god damn annotiations... first beneath video, now it's above video... and since they put that, my uploaded videos, wich are wmv format, are not in catastropfic resoultion... even they have high quality option... WTF is going on with youtube? if they continoue like this new shits, I will be first one who will leave this site.

After around 2 weeks of work with a couple other guys, we figured out how to get HQ to show up. Search "Youtube High Quality Mystery" and hopefully this will help you. Youtube scans the first part of your video and determines if it should be HQ, even if you meet the req.s, your videos may still show up "normal". I think this may help you.

For two pass encoding, you must run "2 pass 1st pass," followed by "2 pass Nth pass." The first pass gathers statistics but has no useable video. Alternatively, you can experiment with some of the single pass modes.

Hi, I tried to do my videos at 480x360 but it failed miserably, the quality was bad. Now I am doing it at 640x480 but it can still use a pinch. I am receiving a few error messages in the log after I save as the "nth pass"

Many of us use Movie Maker. I save my videos as "best quality for playback.." and it worked fine. However, and I don't know why, the last week or so, I have not been able to get ANY of my videos in HQ and I am doing everything exactly the same way I always have. I'm very frustrated with YT.

I thought I was the only one. I use vista, and when I publish videos as the widescreen 16:9 DVD Quality, youtube used to convert the videos to include the "watch in high quality" option. However, recently youtube is not giving me the "watch in high quality" option anymore, even though I still exported and uploaded my movies in the same way! Very weird...

It looks like the YT bug that was preventing many of us from posting HQ video is being resolved. Almost all my videos uploaded in the last 24 hrs are showing in HQ. I posted over 50 "test" videos in the last week and NONE of them showed up in HQ. (edited with Movie Maker) Hang in there, it should be working normally again soon.
