  • "Sorry, I had to move something out of the way" .. what was that, your beard?

  • He could also just loop black plastic hose around the top of the dome, that soaks up solar heat and pump water into it as needed. The weight also holding down on the tin roofing in high winds.

  • man i really want to come by sometime just to drop of the tidbits of stuff i have. electric motors and such gears pullys bearings. who doesnt like that stuff. but really the main reason id go is just to "go outside and take a leak off the cliff."

  • I saw a cheap solar heater that used pop cans, you connect them into long tubes, paint them black, and put them on the roof. Then run the water through them and the sun heats the water as it runs through the cans

  • fantabulous

  • get a composting toliet

save water and good source of feritlizer

  • You live in what obviously looks like a very cold climate and mention you use only cold water. How is it the water pipes/hoses that you use don't freeze up in that large amount of travel from the source to your dome.

  • I haven't been using the pump in the winter. I just get buckets and carry them to the dome. If I want hot water, I put some in a pot on the wood stove which is always on in the winter. :-)

  • Thanks, that answered one of my questions too.

I like the pump - tank - gravity - tap thing, but just thinking, you could put a rainwater collection thingie on the hillside above the dome, and use raintank - gravity - holdingtank -gravity - tap. Would save fuel for the generator!

By the way, I like the idea of having the holding tanks above the stove. That's smart!

  • I was curious what you did for hot water, but I see you mentioned the answer in some of the replies to this video.

You said you like cold showers. Did you kind of get sick of that theory yet, and look into a way of heating it?

I found this company, Marey that makes SUPER CHEAP propane tankless water heaters. The small model would set you back $120 and would be more than enough for your minimalist lifestyle. Just add a BBQ propane tank and you have heat for under $150.

  • ...and endless need for propane. :-P When I want hot water, I heat it on the wood stove in a big pot.

I'll probably make a solar heater later.... and a run a pipe around the stove pipe or something like that.

    Its still a low priority.

  • thats a great idea they have solar hot water heaters just let the sun do all the work! or maybe you could put a tank of water in a tube that goes around the chimney of the woodstove

  • Haha, anybody notice anything interesting at 1:36 ? =D

  • u are my hero lol i would love to do the things u do in the forest. i have land in Wisconsin but i dont have any money to build on it . but keep working on that robot i love watching these videos..

u should just put them all on dvd and sell them to make money XD

  • You sound a little silly! Did I mention the dome cost 1500$. ..and the lumber mill was 100$

You could work at McDonalds and save that!

    You have no excuse!

Ok ok, I'll quit giving you a hard time. ....but seriously... thats awesome that you have land! Don't let yourself convince you that you can't do something.

  • well its not that im paying for college lol i have no money extra :(

  • I see. I had that little issue too. I spent the year after school working 12 hours a day, and eating rice, and sending all my moneys to the loan people. It sucked, but it was quite nice when I got out of debt!

  • but yeah i will deal with it but your video's are awesome i watched everyone yesterday and was just amazed by what u can do . haha like i said another time u should but them on dvds and sell them i bet alot of people will buy them

  • Ya, maybe. I don't usually think of things in terms of what will get me moneys, though. :-P but.... i am planning on taking all the video's for the robot stuff when its done and putting them together. it would make a decent DVD. :-)

  • i knwo i would but it. You have one of those very easy, get along type personality's that makes these videos even better haha u should talk to the discovery channel see if u can get a job.

  • Someone from the discovery channel sent me a message yesterday, actually. I rsponded, but Idon't know if I'll hear from them again. Who knows...

  • well there u go im sure u can get a show or something and than u can mass produce your robots and change the face of transportation!!!!

everyone will be in giant spider robots

  • I did just get a message from someoen at discovery channel. I responded, but they haven't gotten back yet. Maybe they're slow... or maybe they're just plain flakey like most of popular culture. :-P

  • no doubt... but in time, when the economy gets even worse, when all the suburbanites decide that they want land after all and desire a renewable energy compatible life... then discovery just might drop a pile of hard cash on you your lap to convince you to play along in a reality tv show based on your life.

JK... or maby not... you never know lmfao!

  • Oh.... if the world wants to pay me to teach them how to live, I have no problem with that. :-P

  • Is your dome completed yet?

  • completed, eh? I don't think it'll ever be completed. What would be the fun in THAT!? Nope. I change things on it whenever I get so inpired. Every year it looks different.

  • O, cool. Jamie, your a smart ass and i bit crazy, I meant that in a good way. You can turn seemingly un-useable junk into something grand.

  • SMART ASS!?? ME!!?? Err... ok ok. ya, you got me there. ha ha

Its funny what people consider unuseable now! Todays garbage would have been better than gold 100 years ago. 1000 years ago a simple water bottle would have been like a magical object.

  • So when are you going to install a cool solar water heater. Really easy to make black pipes some plywood and some black paint might be able to heat your water so you can have warm showers. Maybe pickup an old water heater just to store the heated water in.

  • Probably this summer.

I haven't made a water heater yet because I don't like warm showers. I like 'em cold.

No old water heater to store it. I just wrap my barrels with insulation. I took it off them to work on them, but it'll go back on.

  • Nice update to the world that is domeland. i don't know why but i always thought you had composting toilet up there but septic tank works. if only you could take that ecosystem and put it on an island.

  • ya, no kidding. If only there was still a wild world out there.... that one could simply show up and inhabit. Stupid overpopulation, and power hungry control freaks. :-P

  • indeed... :(

  • So, is your shower water icy cold because it comes from outside (almost) straight into the shower? Sounds...cold.

  • Well, its icy cold when it first gets into the barrels. ...they are strategically places above the wood stove, though.

They don't get hot or anything, but good enough for me. I think I'll have to make a water heater for Dashaina, though.

  • I cant belive you still have snow, I live in new york and the past few days was over 70, I know what you mean of not shaving, I been working on this new project and I havent shave in a week, oh if you ever invite me to your dome I promise I will take a leak outside :)

  • Ya, its been 70degree in VT too. most of the snow is gone. Well, actually, I'm sure its all gone now. That video was a couple days ago. The snow lingered in the forest under the shade of the trees.

  • Arh the mysteries of Jamie and D's relationship, are they just friends? I wonder. I like the mystery though.

Anyone else notice Jamie drew boobies on his blackboard? Droopy ones at that. :-)

Also the model of the spider robot is on one of the barrels.

  • haa haa. ok, that was funny. I was sitting here going "boobies??? on my blackboard???"

Then I watched the video, and Dashaina an I were just cracking up when it got to the blackboard drawing of the barrels. ha ha.

  • Jaimie, is the spring water filtered in any way? Do you drink it straight?

  • YARGH! I drinks eet straight.

Ya, I just scoop some out of that pool down there. ...although usually the pool is lower, and the tube where the water comes out of is above the water. ....so its like a little spout, and I fill up from that.

There isn't much chance of anything bad in the water, though.

...besides, dogs drink from the toilet, and they're still alive! YAR! Filters are fer wimpos!

  • Yeah, I'm sure it safe. I just don't know if I could bring myself to drink water that Mr. Froggerford swims in. :)

  • And pees in. Your drinking frog pee! :-)

  • frog pee! yippee! Well, he lives in the secondary pool. I didn't show it, but I generally get drinking water from the 1st pool. I didn't show it because its something I rarely disturb in any way.

  • Show me the water you drink, and i bet I can find way worse stuff than frogs in it. :-P

  • Cool system Jamie, i enjoyed watching your beard dissapear in the middle of the episode.

Tell Mr. Froggerford i said hi.

  • I didn't even realize the beard until I read this and went back to watch again...

    IT'S MAGIC!

  • OK OK, I admit it. I was showing the electrical system and electricuted the crap out of myself. ....all my facial hair exploded off my face.

  • Ya. ha ha. I shave like once a month lately. I think its funny too. I'll shave and suddenly, poof! There's my face!

  • So how is she related to you? or is she just a friend? If she is a friend and single go out with her =D

  • Hmmm. Well, she's my roomate. duh. isn't that totally explanatory? :-P

  • you so lucky you have a cool roomate, my roomate keeps complaining that my room looks like a garage, so I told her she moans too hard when her bf comes,, so that shut her up.

  • Haa haa. nice.

Well.... I'd be lying if I said it was smooth sailing. We piss eachother off quite a bit. Its a little frustruating.

I've learned to roll my eyes, and go about my business, though. :-P

  • Well uh. make ur move and be happy! jk but still.

  • Move? I don't wanna move! I like the dome! err... heh heh. just kidding. I know what you meant.

  • Once you've proven your robot works you could build a scaled up version and mount the dome on it, then you could walk the dome anywhere you wanted too. :-)

  • Aw yes. You mimic my dreams excellently. :-P

I think that would be so awesome. I think I might have to get a job at a scrap yard and use all their steel to do just that!

  • "Howls moving castle" anyone :D

  • OH! ya ya! Kinda like that!

  • lol great. Any who think up something like that in your spare time :D
