  • I would like to know how to process the reese like you do in you rmore modern tracks. Please loki!

  • very useful mate. this is going to be hours of fun

  • Comment removed

  • solid mate! craziest noise I have heard without hardware or granular sampling...i find it weird how the tutorials for Reese basses from 3+ years ago are better than most of the newer ones. I mean I suppose dubstep wobbles and deadmau5 style have made a big impact since 3 years ago (and crappy tutorials for them clogging up yourtube)...but the reese is still being used just as much today as it was 3 years ago

  • i love the grunty bass, cheers for the tutorial, you R awesome!! :-) and you make my day!!!

  • he goes so fast like this is nothing, but in our eyes this is fucking gold. x]

  • as it is called the program?

  • I have a good Idea...Lets see if I can do this as fast as I can!!! woohoo!! Im great!.....Teaching quality....0.0.

  • @ydobluv just pause and go back if you missed something

  • thank you soooo much!

  • I just downloaded reson 5 (for free of course) its immense

  • I cannot reproduce this sound. My ear hears some kind of phase type sound going on. I thought it was the comb filter, but my settings are exactly what the video shows. There is also some kind of rise in the note on the second half of the bar, but my ear can't tell if it is the note or the automation.

I wish loki showed the midi for this better.

    My attempt: ftp://ftp.christopherpisz.is-a geek.com/music/sounds/reason/Loki_Bass_Reese.zip

    Can someone help?

  • Please tell me the drum loop your using! thanks :)

  • @minsqueeno2 made it himself. Do the same

  • Whats this software called?

  • @michaelmcdonagh123 Reason 4

  • Good bass sound but by definition it is not a real reese! Reese is short (kinda) for resampled after all.

  • @oopo1 its actually called a reese bass because the producer that invented the bass went under the name of master reese/reese project.

  • The drums you have in this are awesome. If you did a tutorial how to make this set I would so much appreciate it.

  • siiiiiiick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I have 2 questions

    1. Is the sub bass to give the bass overall warmth or to make sure that the lowest frequencies are being made use of or both or what?

    2. My second question is related to the first possibly. I watched a music documentary one day and this dude was saying that the first decision he makes when he starts making a tune is whether the 'drums or the bass is going to sit at the bottom'. Does this make any sense to you? Should the drums...

  • @tom8008135 [continued]... and the bass not sit at the same frequencies for some reason? What is the ideal lowest frequency? Should I stick to that frequency or is it all simpler than that i.e. just use my ears and do what sounds good? Thanks!

  • @tom8008135 No one has replied to you unless I missed it. I know it's late but anyways. Basically you can decide whether you want a tight kick hitting around 100 Hz with a real Low sub bass (frequency will depend on your scale for each track) which is what is used for dnb so the bass comes out massively through a good sub. Or for most non electronic stuff the kicks low end is around 50 Hz and the bass sits above that. The two will always overlap to a certain extent but that's the basics :)

  • @0tto777 thanks mate! Loki1200 got back to me (author of the vid itself)! Both of your answers are very helpful and interesting! I'm just starting out so I need to know this stuff ha ha cheers :)

  • @tom8008135 to keep the two seperate, for dnb especially, find a tight kick sample that is hitting around the 100Hz mark, giving it a slight boost there to make it stand out. Then cut out everything below around 70 - 80 Hz with a fairly steep roll off. Pretty much do the opposite with the sub bass. shouldn't need a boost at the low end, just put a fairly harsh ( 4-6 db) cut where the kick is hitting so they don't conflict in those frequencies and your away. Hope that helps :)

  • BIG UP!!

  • great tuts, gonna subscribe. Can you explain a little or even do a tutorial on how you create your drum and bass beats/drums patterns?

  • Do you have portamento on the bass, or is that just a audio effect due to the modding of the filter?

  • oh, never mind. at 6:58 I see you tweaking the portamento....

  • THE best reese tutorial I've ever come across. No matter what I do in FL Studio, I can't get anything near that good.

    Cheers.

  • @W3R3W00F

im a firm reason user too, but i think the key to this sound is the detuned saw waves. i know there are a couple of free vst you can grab that would produce a similar sound. look for anything called a supersaw wave, or you could even link together a bunch of 3x osc's together and detune the saw waves slightly

  • Holy shit dude best sounding reese I've heard from a youtube tutorial, thanks!

  • Where could I find these killer drums?

  • can u email me some nice reese patches / refills ?

  • ty very much!

  • Omfg , you made a nice tune!

  • 27 people trying to make a tiny justin bieber treble line

  • This video changed my life!

  • reason is so much cooler than fl...me saying this, yeah, i use fl

  • awesome, thanks for that tutorial!

  • when you make music on reason is there already sound and beats to use or do you have to play a instrument and record yourself and like transfer it on to reason and make a beat like that,, or can you simply make it from scratch using reason resources ???? please helppp im newww lmao

  • @RNzGa On reason, you program all your music and make it yourself. :)

All from scratch, but there are a variety of presets/patches for each synthesizer, effect, or what is called a combinator, which is where you place instruments (1 or more) and add effects (1 or more) to create an entire instrument used on a single rack :)

Great program, but very different from others.

  • Nice tutorial man .

I wanna ask , are you using midi for the sequencer ? I mean how are putting notes in the sequencer ?

  • Dude im listening you on myspace your tunes are so damn rawr ! BIG UP !

  • @zymojo are you detuning them enough?

  • Dude this is dope! Youre a monster. Do u work just on this software or on reason FL aswell?

  • damn, im just watching this, and smiling so hard knowing i have reason 5, but i absolutely not in anyway know how to use it :( i will prevail! :)

  • Wicked tutorial, explained properly rather than going on and on about easy things and skimming over more complex stuff. Cheers! Did you make a mastering one in the end? I've been reading a lot on it lately because it was my main weakness so now I have a lot better understanding of the theory of it, but could still do with learning a bit more!

  • @missrave2thegrave samee here!!!!...

  • Please make more tutorials. :)!!!!!!

  • i like how you dont stop and start so people dont completely copy your sound

  • You deserve an award for making this tutorial! Thanks a million!!!! :D

  • mate... so good... im gonna send you a version of the tune ive used your tips with... and your tunes are heavy, im a liquid dnb fan, but still find yours big mate... carry on the good work!

  • hei dude, sick tutorial man!!

this is exactly what im looking for,

and the 26 people who don't like this, are probably liquid lisener ...

  • @windsurferAT What kind of stupid statement is that? This tut helped me out, and I make Liquid...

  • whats the name of this program

  • @DjRodimusPrimeXyZ Reason 4. Reason 5 is now available also.

  • Crazy stuff man ;)

Could you make a tutorial for the bassline from "Pendulum - Through the loop" I really love these kind of Basses, it would be really awesome.

  • Hi mate, Thans for the great tutorial. I was wondering if you did use some kind of effects that isn't shown in this video, because i followed all the steps of your tuturial but the sound i get sounds less interesting and far more boring than yours, even when trying out different note patterns. Thanks in advance mate. Cheers.

  • @zymojo There are no more processes affecting the sound than the ones in the video. Are you starting from a blank patch?

  • @loki1200 he probably doesnt have the same drum roll

  • @zymojo MATE ;)

  • Comment removed

  • nice tutorial man, big ups, makes me want to do a phat ass bass reece tutorial lol

  • where is thor link?

  • In my videos you can listen to songs made with Reason 4.0

  • @Soultroopr I have same problem!

  • + sub, at last i find some good dnb bass ;] If i make somethink, i will send you it ;]

    keep tune

  • This is really a fantastic tutorial, and your sound level is incredible!

I have a quick question for you.

I love your snare sound, very deep and punchy. I have a hard time finding samples that sounds like that, I mostly have very thin and high end snare, that don't have that deep punch in the face sound.

    Any recommendations?

Again cheers for teaching this on, it is superb.

  • @FinalFragment

Agreed, i've been looking for snares like these for a while :/

  • @FinalFragment

Try using an EQ with a single boost, somewhat steep peak, almost a notch if you will, and move it around the freq band on your snare. It should allow you to find the mid-range punch you were looking for in the sample and bring it out in the mix. Just don't boost too high and adjust to taste.

  • man i found this tutorial years ago, and its what really kick started my production. i learnt more from this tutorial than any other i could find. now im actually making decent tunes (still took a couple years to get the hang of it lol)

Loki is the DON! big up man. too many producers are tight lipped about even the most basic production techniques. reap what you sow, the more producers there are writing decent tune, the better the scene will get!

    LEGEND!

  • how do u create your sine sub bass??????

  • Really good tutorial, though voice would have been nice.

As for the outcome, this is the best reese bass sound I've heard on youtube.

    It's absolutely great!

  • 162, 723 votes??? you FUCKING DESERVED EVERY SINGLE ONE!

  • loki, respect!

  • Really nice ,thx for that

  • im having a hard time with the automation, ie getting good movement. any tips on automation would help me a lot. thanks

  • very nice...im so still a noob to this...but im working on it...so many things to learn.

    Peace From Denmark

  • Possibly the best tutorial for a reece bassline on the whole of Youtube. Stand up and be applauded.

  • Realy nice man! Great sounding :D

  • This is a great tutorial. I was able to make it wobble on it's own by creating another THOR, muting it, then linking the frequency CV to LFO 2 on the muted THOR. I switched the LFO 2 to a saw wave and was able to get some gritty sounds.

Thanks a lot though. I've been trying to get a sound like this for awhile.

  • Отлично сделал басс

  • You really have skillz man! did you make the Samples from the beat by yourself?

  • Fuck me, thats good, nice one lad.

  • Im impressed man =]

    Very simply explained indeedy,

Iv been scouring and trying many a neuro/noisia bass tutorial

But this one seems the perfect solution,

Just sat and spend 3hrs writing it all down and comparing with vst's as im a cubase user

Nice one keep it up =D

  • Hey man sick sounds, can I ask what samples did you use for your drums, they sound fat! cheers

  • fat drums and fat bass!!

  • what sound usign to made drums in redrum?

  • bravo bravo

    ace tutorial!

  • i like reason cuz i learn something everyday

  • @loki1200

I start saying that i love your songs and your tutorials helped me a lot!

now i have reason for a year and i never found so heavy kicks and snares like yours....

i don't trust in on line packs...

please loki!!! where can I find some good samples??!!! pleaseeee

    thanks

  • Thanks a ton bro, I used what I learned from you to make a pretty sick dubstep loop, working on it right now. Sounds nastyyy

  • i skipped to the end to check the final synth, eargasm!!!! this is sexy!!

  • That sure is a nice bass! :-)

  • That was awesome.. I learned a lot of tricks from this video, thanks for making it.

  • You made the drums in reason as well?

  • That's a sexy reese you've made, it would be nice if you bought a microphone instead of using text but I can't complain.

  • Sounds great. Thanks for the tutorial!

  • Youre a legend, im no longer shit at using reason thanks to you

  • I actually do have a question but, it covers something different not gone over in its entirety but, it's still related. General Gain structure wise, where does your Lead Bass and Sub Bass sit at db wise in your mixer? I've come to a crossroad recently and I figured I'd ask someone who definitely knows what they're doing.

  • Very nicely done. Check out my song please :) Critics are always appreciated to make myself better.

  • better than this, is making the reese bass yourself and find out how you can modulate it for example using LFO`s and any filters..i think the secret is the phaser and that "hoovination" sound like...maybe a future tutorial about this wuld be fvery useful ! BIG UP THERE

  • nice one loki, nice tunes too, i was wonderin why this sounded so sick

  • Wicked bass destruction and wicked tutorial!!Well done Loki, enjoeyed it so much!!

  • great stuff man, really helped me figure out an easier way of making a great reece

  • SICK

  • Sounds Mental - Propellerhead have done so well over the years and they just get better. Amazing Production nice harmony. Im DnB DJ check out my scratch video search for DJ Wreckless 2010

  • Sounds like Noisia

  • @kw1ksh0t

Noisia probably copied this guys' tutorial.

  • @TSMDesigns i realy doupt it.......

  • Any good soundpacks to recommend?

  • @kazaamjt Lol, maybe a rewire will do the trick :P

  • Reminds me of neurofunk :O

  • Need to get a Scream 4 for FL... xD

  • @JeffsterProductions food luck with that XD but scream 4 rules though :O

  • i been ad a nose on your myspaceee Keep it up m8 ! fucking slammming

  • helped me a little, check my work based on the tutorial.

    /watch?v=Bi5A8Bw5nJs

  • Awesome videos man. Thanks for taking the time to make these!

  • Why do you tune em both in different direction? You can just use the detune button in the multi oscillator?

  • THanks mate. Real straight forward. Sounds great.

  • you're having phase issues with the sub, notice is much subbier in 5:27 than when you put the sub.

This can be fixed by putting the stereo imager in Hi Band Solo, and the X-Width from 300hz. That way you won't be having phase issues with the subbass which usually sits between 0 - 120hz (sometimes goes even higher, but can be fixed with a filter after it).

  • Great tutorial !! :) please make more , posted my response with my attempt , great teachin

  • I like that tune a lot

  • thanks for tutos

  • ruude never liked using thor that much but this has made it look very handy

  • resample that sound it will sound much better

  • good shit here

  • Haha - like the bit at the end about turning it into a track. Was just gonna say - this ain't sounding toooooo bad! Good work man.

  • Hey loki, can you pm me ASAP? I got a quick question

  • Man, this is so hard to do in FL D=

    But i got close!

  • Drum patch???! Tell us exactly how you did it!

  • genius genius genius

    thank you many times

  • Hi mate,

    Your tutorial is great!

    Thank you very much:-)

  • i wish i had the patients to learn to make tunes on reason thought it would be a piece of piss lol i have never seen anything like it madness!!!

  • i have the different sound of saw!!!

  • hey loki, where can i get the prog? i had it before, but lost it

  • man the outcome is fuckin sick u got a track on this yet?

  • reese bass?

  • where do you get your drum sounds from?

  • Hi Loki can you make a beat tutorial? like in your tracks!

  • Wow, thanks for nice tutorial man! It helped alot ! :)

  • The easiest so far to create a heavy wicked bass reese. gonna practice more on creating it from your way and tweak it more when I'm ok. BTW, I heard some of your tunes. Great stuffs! Certainly not newbie stuffs. Thanks for sharing your reese secret!

  • I've been on dogs of acid forums for ages trying to find a tutorial like this. This is undoubtedly the best Noisia/Spor/Calyx style bass tutorial I've seen. I'm going to be following it to the T, but whacking distortion from Guitar Rig 3 and using a bit of PSP Nitro. Cheers for this tutorial! Wicked tracks by the way. Hope you're as good a DJ as a producer, cause you'll be hitting some venues in the near future!!

  • Makes me glad to see someone else doing their bassline's while running on the fly. I kept reading everyone else bouncing samples back and forth but, I like running it on the fly myself like this. Big up's on showin' the heads its done by the way.

  • just a lil tip, use a bit of portamento for the melodic sweep changes, i didnt see it on the video

thanks man this is fucking great

  • Fuck, that's sick.

  • but i need a good warm soundcard... what soundcard do you all say is the best for a good warm tight sound? creative x-fi? e-mu 1820? lynx? so expansive...

  • @loki1200 where did you get those drum patches?

  • Luke Vibert and Aphex Twin use this a lot they said. But its so complicated. To many options. I would need to study it for 1 or 2 months to get really hard into it. I guess this reason is the best tool to make good electronic music. Reaktor 5 is just like a infinity soundlabor. I like when the drummachines just go and run. so i will buy me reason end of the year. i hope it runs on 2.13 ghz dual core and 4 gb ram.

  • @konjunktion26

easy will run on that spec.

reason's really cleverly written so it runs really well even on crap machine's like mine XD

  • very good tutorial! Where are the samples of the drumloop from? sounds nice..did you edit by yourself?

  • Why dont you use the inner filter of the thor and making variation on it via LFO or the Env Mod (it's better so it triggers when the note is played) ?

    Cheers

  • Amazing man!

  • Like the othercritics. awesome vid. very solid reese

  • Hey, sorry I feel like an idiot, I'm sure if I copy your steps from the very beginning, the actual note that I start out with sounds different to the one you start out with. Yours seems to start out nice and warm and growly and mine starts out thinner, almost as if there's some distortion on it to begin with. I'm going to start again from scratch but if you can shed any light on on perhaps a parameter change with Thor near the very start thats hard to see, that would be great. Thankyou.

  • @proveyouwrong02 aaaaaaaah I think it was amount on the detune mode thing on the first oscillator... niiiice

  • How did you get the drums together? That is what I wanna kno! That just boggled my mind!

  • good work...respect

  • What sound are u using?!

  • @Halo3GuitarHeroPlaya

I'm starting from a blank patch. read description for info.

  • @Halo3GuitarHeroPlaya DIe noob

  • good shit

  • 5/5 cool!

  • Really glad I watched this though, I've been at this a while and could never figure out how to both get a bassline sounding the way I wanted it to and give it free range to breath, seems like you nailed that quite well.

BTW, any ideas on the Suv - Input type wobble?

  • Don't have a clue about reason or want to know but for some reson i liked this video and watched it all :P Nice bass :D

  • I liked how you do it. Nothing superfluous. Just like many of overburden rack nonsense. Sorry for my English and respect from Russia. 8-)

  • Wicked!! much respect

  • awesome vid man , really helpful

  • siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick this is nasty stuff man

  • At 5:11 how did you shape that automation level to give it a box shape? I could never figure that out.

  • @cabose34521

Ah! Something else I forgot to put in this tutorial.
