@fritchydog If it's got the E61 (which I'm assuming it does since the majority of Faema machines do), then it will fit. But I can't commit 100% without seeing the machine. - Kat
how come you rarely use these things? or do you just prefer the double spout because you get to pour the shot into two glasses?
On another note, I've passed by some bodum made double-walled shot glasses on displays. I checked one out once but when I heard it clink, I immediately had the urge to put it back on shelf on move as far away from it as possible because the thing looked and sounded like it was made from very thin sugar glass. So really, how fragile are these things?
@mark2500 I use it all the time for my own drinks but we generally stick with double shots for filming. The Bodums are made from borosilicate glass, same as test tubes and beakers, if that gives you an idea as to their durability. - Kat
@infamousmonster Sorry, I can't recall; Gail generally tamps at 30 lbs. of pressure and we use either Lavazza Super Crema or Velton's Bonsai Blend in our videos. - Kat
@infamousmonster tamping 30lbs of pressure is irrelevant to making any espresso. Your job as a barista, or home barista, is to make a even coffee bed so when the pressure does come down it is a even extraction. The reason i say this is that, like most, machine is running 9 bars of pressure or 132 PSI (Pounds Per Square in) it is inhumanly impossible to delving the same pressure the machine is with a tamp. Concentrate more on making a nicely even coffee bed then how much pressure you packing.
@gravesforboys Thanks, yeah, these days, I don't really apply 30 lbs of pressure... more like 15 lbs, if that. I find the extraction is much better, especially if the espresso beans are old. When I started out, I thought I had to really mash the espresso with the tamper, and that just caused the puck to fracture during the extraction.
Really love all your Vids.. so helpfull.. I would also love to see some videos on roasting beans to do you guys also roast? anyway cheers for all theses helpfull tips.
@MsRanita79 We have some home roasters that we want to do videos on -- they're on the list and the weather is getting good enough that we could probably do them soon, so stay tuned :) - Kat
Ah ha! I knew you ladies would provide the answer i was looking for! I just pulled shot after shot through my new naked pf on my 1 yr old Silvia (all from SCG, of course!) but the shots were tasting bitter and overextracted. I also noticed the naked pf required much more coffee than my regular pf but didn't really know how to approach these oddities. Alas, I turned to the SCG Youtube channel and found the exact information I was looking for: a longer extraction time!! Thank you! SCG rocks!
Hi kat i was just wondering if its normal for the screw in the Rancilio to stick right through my puck??? and whether this means i'm doing something wrong...
@92benjy This is common; you could adjust your dosing/tamp. The ideal would be for it to not come in contact with the puck before brewing, and it will come into contact during/after as the coffee expands. You could try a different tamper that has a bit of a curve to it, perhaps, to give a little more room for the brew screw. - Kat
Kat & Gail, we live in New Orleans and the only reason we ever had the confidence to operate and maintain all of this expensive equipment is because of your videos. We just got our Rocky from you and we've also bought the bottomless pf, the Silvia, our Lavazza, and all our accessories from Seattle Coffee Gear. I don't know if you realize it but these videos are such an amazing public service and I hope your store's online sales are up because of them. Y'all deserve it! Thanks, and keep it up!
Thank you so much for your feedback! I passed it to Gail. We love hearing about folks that find our videos/information helpful -- it's what we're here for! So really happy that we have been a good resource for you. Please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions or video suggestions :) - Kat
Hey, Kat. One thing that would really help me and probably a lot of other people is showing brew group maintenance on the Silvia. You guys have a video already with that title but it doesn't actually show anyone unscrewing, taking out the screen, cleaning it, and putting it back. I'm a little apprehensive about messing something up, so I'd love to see y'all do it so that my cleaning regiment can be finalized. By the way, the backflush and descale videos were perfect!
Thanks for the video ladies, this is very well done and interesting viewing. My Silvia will be arriving mid nextweek and now I need to get a naked portafiller!
Hi girls thanks for the videos. 2 questions. I just bought the same portafilter (from you) and I have water left in it after I pull the shot. Is that Normal? also I just bought the Rocky (from you also) what would the best setting be for espresso in my Silvia? Thks... ;0)
I usually have a little bit of water left on the top of my puck after I pull the shot, not much. As far as grind is concerned, you'll need to calibrate it to your grinder -- I'd start at around 8, pull a shot and time it -- too fast = go finer, too slow = go coarser. Do this until you're getting your double shot to come out in 20 - 30 seconds. - Kat
how many grams should a triple espresso shot be? because I see portafilters with an 18 gram filter and others with a 21 gram filter, which is the better option?
I would go with the 18 gram basket and then updose if you find you like the flavor to be closer to 20 grams. It doesn't increase exponentially, so anywhere in between 18 - 20 is probably a good dosage for a triple; some people even updose their double baskets if it leaves enough room in the portafilter. - Kat
I don't think it tastes stronger, since it's an overall increase in volume -- both coffee and water and the extraction time is increased. When I sip it as a straight shot, it has a similar flavor to a double, just more of it :) - Kat
Hehe yeah I know! I just don´t know which machine I´m gonna get, and the size of the brewhead! But I´m gonna go into the naked business soon enough :)
I'll have to get that bottomless portafilter when I order my Rancilio+Rocky from you soon. Btw, I just finished watching every single video you have ever posted (it took a few days). Really good stuff! You have some of the most useful espresso related videos on youtube.
Not sure if you know this, but will this portafilter fit a 1990's Faema Compact-A c-84 (not the newer e98 compact)? Thanks. Love your videos.

I noticed you didn't tamp it that hard. Was it 30 lbs of pressure? Regardless, great shot. What was the espresso again?
