This is rock of the absolute highest order. I love Led Zeppelin but Free are in a class of their own. Plant, Page et.al are truly fantastic but they can't touch this. I don't think anyone can.
Andy Fraser isnt shown much in this video because it wasn't cool to be a bassist. Nothing has been cut out. Myself im a bassist and wish to see andy playing that bass solo
I´m pretty sure it was cutted. Not by the poster of the video, of course, but if there was more than 1 camera, somebody made an edition. But it´s very funny to see the camera focusing Paul holding the base while Andy fry his bass solo...hehehe
@frankyh101 hello yess im totally there got my ticket...i went to see a free tribue band tonight..was pretty impressed...called freeway..was spooky..they had the moves to a t.cheers
Amazing as always ..with Koss up against the wall of wattage in full flow with the music . Interacting with the rest of the band as a unit ( rare these days )
More than the sum of the parts , don´t you think ?!!
i saw these guys live at york uni years ago, take it from me they could seriously play, incidentally if you're the girl with her arm in plaster i danced with... say no more
Wow!! I'm trying to teach myself bass, so looked up this to have a listen along with the tab.... and I couldn't take my eyes off the video! These guys had real magic! Great track.
I was at this concert. Free were a major highlight for me that weekend. Kossoff was so great. What a loss. I still love Paul Rogers voice. Thanks for posting.
Always liked this band, now I'm digging deeper. I looked up some history the other day and it says the wonderful guitar player died on a plane, as opposed to in a plane crash. Weird.
Anyway was he addicted to pills, heroin, alcohol or something. I bought Fire and Water what else might a true fan recommend.
The revolutionary white blues act of the 70's..this owes nothing to the USA & our black brothers...it's a 70's western developed democracy suburban blues thang...off the planet janet sparse white boy playing....OK OK so the Poms had to be good at something!!!!!
E421UGE: as I said, to me it's a 70's western developed democracy suburban statement blues thang..maybe it could be called 'rock'n'stroll' rather than white blues...nothing to do with the colour of anyone's skin...Free are a British blues band who orginated this kind of sparse rock arrangement...I don't know if Fraser was making a personal political statement..do you?
On every one of the versions of this song, as soon as Fraser goes into the bass solo, the fuggin cameraman wanders off ( showing Kossoff's right hand or the crowd )No respect!! Give the bassist some props fer Chrissakes............
I think Kossoffs solo on the Granada tv special in Free's rendition of this song is about as good as it gets but he takes the emotion to a different level here, absolute class. If this guitar playing doesn't give you goosebumps i'd check your pulse.
Good point, and also very little distortion too, whenever you hear it played now (see recent Rodgers clips) they pile on the awful distortion - to cover a multitude of sins !
not sure if the free guys were ever the most talented, but it can`t be denied they played from a place so far gone, most of todays `pimply herberts` havn`t got a clue.
Andy Fraser is excellent in this band - and still just a teenager! They are amazingly full sounding and all super talented. Don't mistake Simon Kirk's drumming as lazy or too simplistic - he does what serves the song and keeps a steady groove - which most drummers can't do.
Don't they make all the modern rock bands look soulless, pointless, pastiche. Thanks for bringing this vid to youtube, maybe one day FREE will be huge!!
yeh, most modern bands are complete shit, to be frank. for instance, mcfly. no more needs to be said. saying that, some, like the kaiser chiefs and sum 41, have got something going on, though not quite to the intensity of free.
i really love rodger's constant comments around the beginning of the song ('it's mr big'...). just pure genius.
Killer Tune, Yeh Paul made faces. He's just feelin that killer vibrato on his lead. He was such a great guitarist. It is a shame we had to loose him. So stay off drugs kids. He could have been great without drugs.
Free were simply a fantastic band with no pretentiousness - they knew what they wanted to play and delivered. They didn't give a shit what other people thought of them. A great live band. What you saw was what you got - 4 young guys who left behind some great rock/blues music.

Free at their best. This is real class, as good as it gets! If you want funny faces check out Vanilla Fudge doing "You Keep Me Hanging On" in the late sixties - that's also brilliant heavy rock from the same period. I don't think it was simply that "pulling faces" was fashionable back then, more that cynicism hadn't taken over and raw emotion was something beautiful rather than embarassing. This Free performance is legendary for good reason. Absolutely breathtaking!
I don't think it has anything to do with that. Loads of ace guitar players make weird faces while playing... Koss cried with every note, and was a fantastic guitar player who is sorely missed.
Awesome performannce...BUT... I never realised what a fucking twat Paul Kossoff was to watch...shame. Must have been off his face on drugs to pull faces like that on stage. Idiot. Great track though.
It's called intensity, feeling, playing from the heart etc etc, not like the widdlers of today whom I doubt could match any of the style of Paul Kossoff
Yeah I know. My earlier comment is a bit harsh. Brilliant player. It makes me feel a bit uncomfortable watching him though. I guess it's just something you don't see much any more. Pulling a face whilst soloing was obviously 'in' in the early seventies.
