  • It's JIMMY BOWSKILL!! haha

  • Kossoff is as high as a damn kite

  • that sound is so sick..that dusty snare drum, the fuzzy guitar, groovin bass lines, and Rodgers is a beast!!

  • I am glad that I had seen FREE twice in London.

  • Man that drum playing and that main riff of Paul is Killer and so is the solo.

  • The best f$*kn guitar sound of all time a marshal plexi and les paul! rock and roll!!

  • ...and the bass of andy fraser...!!!!!!!!!

  • This is sooo.. nice...

  • Greatest Free Song and best played version ever.

  • Paul Kossoff, Andy Fraser, Simon Kirke and Paul Rodgers, playing together...i have no words.

  • This is rock of the absolute highest order. I love Led Zeppelin but Free are in a class of their own. Plant, Page et.al are truly fantastic but they can't touch this. I don't think anyone can.

  • Paul Rodgers in this video is officially the coolest mother fucker of all time.

  • spettacolari!!!!

  • 1 of the best acts in the Isle Of Wight festival.

  • It doesn't get better than this! Magnificent. How good would Koss have got if he had lived?

  • this solo shows you don't need to play fast to have intensity

  • Boaaahh..wie geil...das Gitarrensolo ist der Hammer...

    LSD+THC und ab dafür...fly High

  • @electromorph

    lolz...\m/

  • @electromorph

    lolz \m/

  • Fuck, the bassist isn´t showed in the video. What´s the problem with these people who cut theses videos?

  • Andy Fraser isnt shown much in this video because it wasn't cool to be a bassist. Nothing has been cut out. Myself im a bassist and wish to see andy playing that bass solo

  • @blindboybenton

I´m pretty sure it was cutted. Not by the poster of the video, of course, but if there was more than 1 camera, somebody made an edition. But it´s very funny to see the camera focusing Paul holding the base while Andy fry his bass solo...hehehe

  • What an erudite comment from Bronzecaster67.

  • wish i could have seen free live....kossoffs my idol..free are one of my fav bands...and i was born on 83. good music never dies

  • bakinblack great to hear Free is so underrated here in the U.S. and so is Humble Pie I love the whole lp of Smokin' by Humble Pie

  • @bakinblack hey saw from you profile that your from the UK

thought you should know That Paul Rodgers and simon kirke are touring now in april as Bad Company :)

  • @frankyh101 hello yess im totally there got my ticket...i went to see a free tribue band tonight..was pretty impressed...called freeway..was spooky..they had the moves to a t.cheers

  • Amazing as always ..with Koss up against the wall of wattage in full flow with the music . Interacting with the rest of the band as a unit ( rare these days )

More than the sum of the parts , don´t you think ?!!

  • Yes, you've hit the nail on the head!

  • i saw these guys live at york uni years ago, take it from me they could seriously play, incidentally if you're the girl with her arm in plaster i danced with... say no more

  • poor drumkit haha took a thrash in that day :P

  • Greatest in everything

  • what a shame ..no sign of Andy Fraser during the base run

  • Kings

  • wake up to this every morning

  • Memorable and usurpassable !!

  • Funny how Kirke hits the charleston cymbals with large arm movement.

I like it!!! And Fraser!!! the sound!!!

  • Andy!!

  • Kossoff!

  • Wow!! I'm trying to teach myself bass, so looked up this to have a listen along with the tab.... and I couldn't take my eyes off the video! These guys had real magic! Great track.

  • magical music from a magical era. Great post thanks for sharing

  • I was at this concert. Free were a major highlight for me that weekend. Kossoff was so great. What a loss. I still love Paul Rogers voice. Thanks for posting.

    Mason

  • uhh love it man everything about this band, songs, rhythm sound pure fuking genius pure rock blues love

  • Now that's what a real Les Paul sounds like!

  • I saw/heard 'the voice' last weekend 08.08.08 in Florida and -Nothing- has changed, he's STILL 'The Voice'

Simon is still solid as ever !

  • Paul Rodgers 'the voice' of rock.Period.

  • dead on..no better rock voice ever.

  • hell yes

i love the bass also in this song

  • Always liked this band, now I'm digging deeper. I looked up some history the other day and it says the wonderful guitar player died on a plane, as opposed to in a plane crash. Weird.

Anyway was he addicted to pills, heroin, alcohol or something. I bought Fire and Water what else might a true fan recommend.

  • the bbc album is great. they always are.

  • tons of sobs is great so is the self titled and highway

  • Thanks gott'em all

  • The revolutionary white blues act of the 70's..this owes nothing to the USA & our black brothers...it's a 70's western developed democracy suburban blues thang...off the planet janet sparse white boy playing....OK OK so the Poms had to be good at something!!!!!

  • Was it not a Fraser song?

He isnt white, for what I can see.

  • E421UGE: as I said, to me it's a 70's western developed democracy suburban statement blues thang..maybe it could be called 'rock'n'stroll' rather than white blues...nothing to do with the colour of anyone's skin...Free are a British blues band who orginated this kind of sparse rock arrangement...I don't know if Fraser was making a personal political statement..do you?

  • Just brilliant,i'm having a trawl through the free stuff on here and its great.thanks to you for putting this up.

  • perhaps one of the best songs iv ever heard!!!

and as a bassist a great bass solo but as usuall the camera never shows it!!! :(

but yep one of the greatest bands ever and im 16 :)

  • simply...WOW.what a band

  • On every one of the versions of this song, as soon as Fraser goes into the bass solo, the fuggin cameraman wanders off ( showing Kossoff's right hand or the crowd )No respect!! Give the bassist some props fer Chrissakes............

  • I wonder if NASA new about this solo, because Koss actually puts these notes into orbit.Pure power and emotion!

  • he, funny. benbeck1, we should ask them!!

  • i think even NASA cant handle the power of Koss's solo

  • @benbeck1

    clever!

    and spot on

  • Jesus! Look at the size of that freakin crowd! 600,000 people. the biggest in world history, I believe. I wish That was me.

  • i wish that too!!! but was't woodstock biger?

  • attendance @ woodstock was 500,000

    isle if wight was 600,000

  • Does anyone expect to ever see something like this again? The record version is different in a big way vocally but equally fucking shabba. Thanks man

  • oh..gotta start workin on that solo!..hes playing style is very close to Angus Young`s!

  • you fool..the bands called free..the song is called mr big...ure thinking of the band mr big..

  • cool it please gentlemen

  • wich ones paul gilbert in thsi vid?

  • free are everything i aspire to be. kossof's wailing licks, fraser's cheeky bass lines, rodger's unusually good voice, kirke's driving beats...(*incoherent drooling*)

  • This is so emotional act...Makes me restless, sad and happy at the same time. You rarely get to see and hear something this strong nowadays.

  • Page and Plant look and learn

  • man ma favourite band ever man there all top class at wot they do bass solo is minted drums guitar love it.

  • I think Kossoffs solo on the Granada tv special in Free's rendition of this song is about as good as it gets but he takes the emotion to a different level here, absolute class. If this guitar playing doesn't give you goosebumps i'd check your pulse.

  • Kossoff's lead solo: no arpeggios, no tapping, and no rake picking and yet WOW, what a great solo!!!!

  • Damn Straight

  • Good point, and also very little distortion too, whenever you hear it played now (see recent Rodgers clips) they pile on the awful distortion - to cover a multitude of sins !

  • not sure if the free guys were ever the most talented, but it can`t be denied they played from a place so far gone, most of todays `pimply herberts` havn`t got a clue.

    oooooh.. my soul`s on fire...!

    indeed mr rodgers.

  • Andy Fraser is excellent in this band - and still just a teenager! They are amazingly full sounding and all super talented. Don't mistake Simon Kirk's drumming as lazy or too simplistic - he does what serves the song and keeps a steady groove - which most drummers can't do.

  • Don't they make all the modern rock bands look soulless, pointless, pastiche. Thanks for bringing this vid to youtube, maybe one day FREE will be huge!!

  • Kossoff rules !

  • The perfect band

  • is that cameraman drunk? btw Free rocks

  • that is was one fucking hell of a guitar solo

  • yeh, most modern bands are complete shit, to be frank. for instance, mcfly. no more needs to be said. saying that, some, like the kaiser chiefs and sum 41, have got something going on, though not quite to the intensity of free.

i really love rodger's constant comments around the beginning of the song ('it's mr big'...). just pure genius.

  • are you shitting me, sum 41 can suck my dick

  • Why the HELL don't the cameramen focus on Andy during his bass solo?!

  • paul Kossoff was amazing, this song is great

  • this is in the Isle of wight Festival!! FCK GRT

  • boys that play and sing like men.......thats the difference between then and now...correct me if i'm wrong...brilliant

  • WELL said.

  • Totally agree with you, today's bands either can't sing for their lives,or sounds like whining teeny boppers or emo geeks!

  • hardly see andy fraser in this video :/

  • Killer Tune, Yeh Paul made faces. He's just feelin that killer vibrato on his lead. He was such a great guitarist. It is a shame we had to loose him. So stay off drugs kids. He could have been great without drugs.

  • i Think guitar mouthing must be a requirement to being an insanely immense guitarist

    Whoa, so many peeps there.

I Was born in the wrong era =(

  • Free were simply a fantastic band with no pretentiousness - they knew what they wanted to play and delivered. They didn't give a shit what other people thought of them. A great live band. What you saw was what you got - 4 young guys who left behind some great rock/blues music.

  • I was actually there that day. that's me on the hill lol. Watched Free for free. Off me face for most of it tho. Great memories Thanks.

  • All this nonsense about face pulling. It's called emotion. You either feel it or you don't. Clapton still does it. If you feel the intensity of what you are playing it will show in your face. Simple.Kossoff is peerless. Unique. If you don't like faces go watch Girls aloud! Hmm... there's a thought

  • Happy days...bleedi'n fantastic!!! far better than the modern rubbish!!

  • Free at their best. This is real class, as good as it gets! If you want funny faces check out Vanilla Fudge doing "You Keep Me Hanging On" in the late sixties - that's also brilliant heavy rock from the same period. I don't think it was simply that "pulling faces" was fashionable back then, more that cynicism hadn't taken over and raw emotion was something beautiful rather than embarassing. This Free performance is legendary for good reason. Absolutely breathtaking!

  • I couldn't put it better.

  • By the way, it should be clear to anybody watching this that Paul Kossoff was completely into what he was playing. Completely.

Funny faces? Yes. Copious amounts of drugs? Probably. Earth moving guitar played from the heart? Most definitely.

  • Nobody can question this performance, it is Free at their very best. Great voice, drums, bass and guitar.

Firing on all four cylinders this band were a force to be reckoned with, and I'd have sold my Grandma to have been at this festival.

Make sure you also check out the immense solo on All Right Now from the same Isle of Wight set. Absolute fucking genius.

  • I don't think it has anything to do with that. Loads of ace guitar players make weird faces while playing... Koss cried with every note, and was a fantastic guitar player who is sorely missed.

  • I personally dont give a fuck what kind of face ANYBODY makes - do you go to shows to watch guys' faces, or to listen to the music?

    who gives a fuck

  • right on!

  • paul really does get involved in his playing love it

  • Paul is in great voice. What a bluesy feel. The band plays as one. The music is the star!

  • i just so happen to like the faces paul kossoff makes

  • Awesome performannce...BUT... I never realised what a fucking twat Paul Kossoff was to watch...shame. Must have been off his face on drugs to pull faces like that on stage. Idiot. Great track though.

  • It's called intensity, feeling, playing from the heart etc etc, not like the widdlers of today whom I doubt could match any of the style of Paul Kossoff

  • Yeah I know. My earlier comment is a bit harsh. Brilliant player. It makes me feel a bit uncomfortable watching him though. I guess it's just something you don't see much any more. Pulling a face whilst soloing was obviously 'in' in the early seventies.

  • I know, everyone has a laugh when I do it during solos too....lol, I too am lost in the seventies

  • Heroin my friends

  • This was before the heroin and the mandrax.

As Bill Hicks said: Play from your f_c_ing heart!

  • what the fuck are you talking about. Do you play guitar if not shut up you fool when emotion is involved the face gets involved

  • here here my friend

  • Fonk!

  • I'm taken aback by Koss' intensity on this clip. Almost too powerful. He was a hell of a guitar player.

  • Simply the best. Others try but dont even get close.

  • Classic!! Was this off a show that was on C4 many years ago? Used to have this on vid....every performance on it is just top notch! Thanks for uploading these!

  • awesome, thanks for posting

  • Thats what live music used to be about, thanks for this clip...think my sister still has this album track!!

  • you're more than welcome
