  • Your form is shit...

  • thanks because I need to perfect my butterfly for my meet this Friday, this helped a ton! thanks a lot to show me the resting points and how to kick and stroke at the same time. I don't like the butterfly because I get so nervous doing it in meets and they are difficult

  • daghan kau swimming lesson

  • DUDE! you're way too much better than my swimming teacher

  • JimmyDShea is by far the most interesting stroke instructor on YouTube. Hands down.

Keep'em coming Jimmy. There is much more you can do with your brand.

    Love the music.

  • @ucfavery undoubtedly agreed.

  • no offense, but teach seriously. ok...

  • this vid is sooooo good. he explained it like my coach did :D

  • HELPPP!! DO YOU BREATHE IN WITH YOUR NOSE OR MOUTH??!?! AND OUT THROUGH YOUR NOSE OR MOUTH??

  • @BeckyTeddy

Breath through your mouth, breathe out with whatever your comfortable with, I blow out through both

  • my only problem with this butterfly stroke is only the hand stroke. It's really heavy...

  • @bu3allash If you chose to sit through the video despite not liking it, you wasted those minutes yourself and that makes you that much more stupid. On top of taking the time to also comment, adding to the stats and exposure of the video.

  • @JimmyDShea he's just jealous bro , keep it up!

  • @JimmyDShea thanks for serving our country pal. its assholes like bu3allash that dont have any respect.

  • @bu3allash oh btw you look so fucking gay in the video and the music are terrible

  • I've been doing swimming lessons for 5 years and i still suck at butterfly :'(

  • lmfao @ that speed. INSANE.

  • Man... this guy can improve his stroke, like the "S" shape is not as good as good as he think it is, it could just be he has more strength in that muscle then with the more efficient way. It's better to (starting from the "rest' position) cup your hands and pull straight down, keeping your hands as close to your chest as possible and end w/ what Conspiracy52 said... but what Do I Know? I was only taught this from the man who was first able to beat the world record in freestyle w/ butterfly ;)

  • I love how you lapped the guy using freestyle

  • nice video i always enjoy every time gives me new lesson to learn, the actions are great, the strokes are great. u r great dear and the music combination u give is reallly very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very vey excellent dear wath my vide dear by typing relaxation swimming by sanjeev kumar, delhi india my email myjobno1@yahoo.com come to india for swimming. we will make cheap tour package.

  • When you pull back, your hands should not be right by your hips; they should be out at an angle

  • Jimmy DShea knows his stuff! I'm saving all of these vids for my own personal tips.

  • Thank you from the depths of your lessons to heart Atuml fatter, and I hope from the depths of my heart to receive and see you in heaven your brother from Saudi Arabia

  • ooooooooh yeah....air hump.

  • These are absolutely awesome.

  • Great tutorial !!!

Btw i have a question, can anyone help me??

I've noticed that the 2 strokes during 3:19 3:24 is a different paced-motion as compared to 3:30 onwards.

So may i know wat kind of speed-paced stroke motion do i practice at beginner level?

PS: My body keep sinks & find it hard to pull for my head up to breathe..

  • THANK YOU! YOU, are my hero!

  • THANK YOU! YOU, are my hero!

  • The background music is very disturbing while ur talking ... but you are so damn good! ;)

  • Thanks a lot mate I tried butterfly first time today after seeing your video last night and I wouldn't have got it without you stressing the hips so much here. Great video, Cheers!

  • Your video helped me so much for the wat hands should move. :D That was all my problem :D thanks!

  • If I could use music to teach my kids I would. They also want "enthusiasm" which to me makes me feel like an idiot. If I had music then I could totally do lots more stuff and make the class that much more fun. But I can't exactly bring in my ipod or something into the pool...

  • @NintendoMaster098 They being my supervisors and the parents.

  • fuck you :((((

    you're so great :D

  • @JimmyDShea erm...just a question... can a 12 years old boy do butterfly????

  • @SuddenAttackspy Of course you can, just takes practice and power strengh.

  • I think this video is way informational but you can barely hear the guy over the music...

  • please don't click here /watch?v=nKPomNOCDSM

  • @sshauryajoy I wont dont worry

  • @Silkenos ok

  • he's teaching it incorrectly, he didn't mention the keyhole that you make in front of you with your arms to pull yourself out of the water

  • @Wazabooz hi, I don't know what I'm talking about here but i read on wikipedia at least that the keyhole thing apparently 'disrupts the flow and speed of the stroke' so maybe not everyone teaches that now. who knows...

  • I like the way the way he started from way back on the other side, and passed the other person up on the left like it was nothing (3:50).

  • lay off, he's only trying to help

and he knows what he's talking about

  • What's ur problem he's here to help

  • This guy looks like a total douchebag who needs to be punched in the face.

  • Great!

  • what song ?

  • Super GREAT!!

  • i only want to learn butteryfly because it looks damn sexy

  • @TokyozzFinest yeah me too :))

  • @TokyozzFinest me too mate it looks absolutely sexy :)

  • @TokyozzFinest It's like you're humping the water, how awesomely sexy is that!!

  • @TokyozzFinest Thait is the worst possible comment fo a swimming video...you shallow cunt.

  • im swimming fly in comferance tomorrow and im still watching this

  • that's really cool! but a little bit hard

  • @ColinPetal yer welcome i'm a competitive swimmer are u

  • @ColinPetal not true if you can swim very well like him you can use the extra Oxygen for your muscles . Look at phelps he breaths every stroke

  • When I first view this video back in 2008, there were only about 50,000 up/down viewers. I'm so happy to see many people are taking interests in swimming. *Additional Note: As you can see, LeBron James clearly travel with his ball in this video...

  • thank you so much for uploading these lessons............im pretty sure it will be usefull to each and every person who watched ur videos......thumbs up.....

  • Jimmy, you have a quirky style of explanation, but somehow you get through! thank you for this and your other videos. You have plenty of credentials and a great attitude. Semper Fi!

  • One kick or two for every stroke

  • @thepete85

Two.One at beginning of stroke(just before hands enter water to begin the stroke) and one after(just before hands exit water to finish the stroke).I explained in my comment above.

  • jebany dobry jest

  • thanks man! it would be better without the music though

  • @jaimecarrion81

    creepy.

  • nice music

  • Jimmy nice work man specially bringing out the places where u take sort of a rest .... Good work

  • first of all you are not a very good swimmer you need to keep your head down even when taking a breath and really extend in the front of the stroke and make sure that you are keeping your elbows up during the front part of the stroke. trust this cuz my swim coach is an olympic gold medalist

  • @69camaroman1 dont make shit accusations.... my coached has made olympians and has talked to many so i know crap. he's swimming quite good..

  • i watched it and then did it i just needed to watch ova and ova.

  • Thanks a lot!! Nice Jimmy. ))))

  • He doesn't even have the body!!

  • is he doing the robot or smthign :o

  • these are amaizng videos and i practice these in my pool at my house and they are amazing!!

    thxns

  • 1:51 that's what she said! XD

  • This video is fantastic or amazing w0w its to learn this move.hehe.maybe more practice to be to get this butterfly perfectly :) nice

  • Thanks a lot for your detailed teaching in slow motion lol and for freestyle too, I'm still learning those... I'll try it the next time in the pool :).

Ya I don't know what I'm doing when I'm in the water, just aaaaaaaaa and it's a mess.. for now..

  • ooh, this video was fulmed on my birthday ::D

  • hahahahahahahahahah

  • WTF, all that shit just to learn how to do a butterfly stroke,bitch......but,thank you. I learned....

  • really starting at 3:16

  • we got taught to do a key when doing fly -fastest time 15:07 for fly

  • YO NO HABLO INGLES PERO TU EXPLICASION ESTA CLARA....GRACIAS

  • TURN OFF this fucking song!

  • I came back to thank you. I watched a couple of times and after years of swimming you helped me set it straight. I like your ways of explaining you must be a well liked guy. The music is not really for me and I hate to say how old I am but good is good. Yeah you can not just learn these motions but if you do it long enough, as you say one day it will just come but you just got to do it anyhow to build up strength and then you might learn.

  • but your supposed to make an hourglass shape when pulling...

  • COOL! Thanks! That might help me perfect my butterfly! So again thanks!

  • hahaha it's hard to take you seriously with all that music.

  • I think the back ground music is a bit annoying

    but useful video thanks

  • hes right, u struggle for years or until u see a good instructional video like this and then u get it and boom! everyone in d pool just cant stop staring when u fly!!! n u feel like d king of d water!!!

  • what a weird dance.

  • Butterfly is a cool stroke. Only thing is, you look kind of ridiculous doing fly in open water for some reason.

  • this video is just stupid!!!

  • dont be angry cuz u cant do it

  • thanks!!!

  • OK, what ever the thing is i just cant do butterfly strokes!

  • It's all about strength with this stroke...you really need to work out your upper strength and shoulders.

  • 1:44 i agree, u dont rest up there

  • Comment removed

  • awesome pose right there @ 3:38 ;) haha

  • can you remove the musci because I could barely understand what you're saying and i dont like the song

  • You need More Ondulation... Just saying

  • 0:34 :D

  • fucking svin hvorfor så meget musik!!!

  • this one's HOT! =) I like the music & i love the way u swim. u're like boomshakalaka! =))

  • i like his butterfly stroke... the only thing i would say is that he should use his hips more when doing stream line dolphin kick, bc he is only using is legs like freestyle... but this vid helped me last year when i was a beginner butterflier... now butterfly is my best stroke... thanks for the vid! :)

  • resting period? no resting period in fly, or any stroke for that matter. its an extension, but if you're resting i just passed you. this is an amateur video by an amateur swimmer. No one at any kind of real level in this sport swims fly like this. hands are too wide at the finish and feet are coming out of the water and kicking air. that's all wasted energy and poor efficiency. I've coached 12 year olds who would beat this guy. 1571 likes obviously dont know the sport.

  • @iangcunningham a resting period is the same as the recovery period. when you bring your arms around in fly, thats the recovery and the resting period. its simply just a different term.

  • @iangcunningham So why don't you post a "proper" tutorial you nit-picking little bitch?

  • @iangcunningham if u dont lik u shouldnt watch and hate

  • wow!!thank u jimmy..i luv ur video, very entertaining!! i c that u r a gud swimmer en teacher as well( i just wish u r my coach)nyway, u made it clear and simple.well done.by the way ur background music is nice..i guess u chose the music by its rythm,,it corresponds to d movement of butterfly.well..i dont know exactly what am saying..but that is..if u know what i mean.keep it up en more power!!

  • i hate butterfly i'm breast stroker!!! but my sister is

  • @Maggie3039 is ur sister hot?

  • @XwaSabwryBat y did you ask me that shes my sister i dont look at her in that way and you better be careful because you know she does have a BOYFRIEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I like the way you swim, Jimmy :D

  • Thank you jimy :)

  • swimming like a BEAST

  • Thank you Jimmy

  • wow

  • Oh... hey baby ;)

  • when i did 50m butterfly in the middlesex compertion i was not relaxeand i just tried to do as many strokes as ones and for that i got a slower time

JIMMY CAN U PLZ REAPLY AND EXPLAN HOW I CAN IMPROVE NOT DOING THIS IN MIDDLESEX GALA !!!

  • Holy crap! hes amazing

  • he is awesome!

  • hardest nd most technical stroke out of all the strokes in competitive swimming hahah my fly suckkss i cant even do a 50 without getting completely exhausted....simply cus i do it sooo wrong hahaha

  • i hoe this helps me tomorrow! first 100 butterfly! and at sectionals!

  • Yay for swimmers! Hahaa. I'm more of a 50/100 free-er

    Very nice thoughh(:

  • You are amazing!!!

  • this is my favorite style, but i can never do it right. so, thanks a lot again. this is very helpful. i'll save this video to my favorite so i can watch it everytime i forget how to do it. hahaha.

  • @MayadIdub

Videos can't help you in swimming strokes properly.Get someone who knows to explain to you through series of drills so you get the stroke and it's timing.Once you learn basics of the stroke comes breathing and getting your body adjusted to stroke. You learn kick first(hips, legs)than you combine it with freestyle(arms)after that you learn the stroke(butterfly)without use of legs, lastly you combine both stroke and kick(butterfly).it's 2 kicks per stroke. One at beginning and one at end.

  • @BoxyTheSpaceDog Just do jimmyDShea what he teach..then practice hardly, you will be a good butterfly swimmer! :D

  • @misxqueen

I already know all strokes and what I wrote are simple drills or steps how almost every stroke is learned to get you there. You wanna know proper channel for learn to swim?Check out "GoSwim098"!Why would I do what he teaches when what he shows is simplicity without any extra tips to improve on the stroke?Check out other channel and you'll see that it's not so easy when you need to improve on your swimming and believe me there's always something new to learn.

  • @misxqueen Yes. Jim may be only here who really teach butterfly. I thank him so much.

  • @BoxyTheSpaceDog true but this is probably the best u can get from utube ;3

  • @snowypenguin1

Check out "GoSwim098".That's the best on Tube :-)

  • @BoxyTheSpaceDog I think good videos could help; I use Dennis Pankratov video as a reference to learn the pull, the timing of first and second kick, recovery. I also see other videos to learn undulation, etc.

  • @lexsoft

I am so glad you mentioned him.I like that video and song in it.See also Misty Hyman's video but I suggest just so you don't get things wrong to learn from professionals.Someone that has been in competitions or as a trainer.I was privileged to know few people from different water sport backgrounds. You wouldn't believe how much you can always learn but here on Tube best channel is "GoSwim098" with almost 400 videos.Learn from those.

  • The beginning is so funny when you start doing the wavy hand thing.

  • Yeah, he's threading through the water in a seamless motion. He knows what he's talking about, well done!

  • looks like a sperm to me.

  • Man, you make it look so easy.

  • Thanx Jimmy, I learned how to swim by watching your videos, thanx a bunch, you are a star.

  • These videos are awesome!! I was a swimmer (age 8-18) and now look for different ways to help my son (age 9) learn different swimming techniques. These videos are chock full of great swimming technique and are fun to watch. I routinely recommend them to other swimmers and parents! Nice work Jimmy! Semper Fi

  • he teaches very well, I'm getting better by watching this video every time and practice the style

  • I'm getting better with this style and even I can do 200 meters but I think I got a problem with the feet and specially with the recover of the feet. you know, the kick.

  • He looks like he's humping a goat.

  • That was a good way to do it. But I have to say breast stroke is my best swim stroke then free back and last butterfly. I always got 2nd or 3rd out of about 7 or 8 in each heat which I think is good.

  • This is very inspiring video. Because of this video, I started to try flying and now I can swim butterfly.

Thanks a ton JemmyDShea. U are the best.

  • 00:21-00:49 best nerdy asian dancing ever.

  • Dis ma jam!! Perfect song to use for this instructional video!

  • Help! When i enter the water after taking a breath, i'm propelled so deep into the water(by my momentum) that my torso is not near the surface.

  • @protiiooi -- just before the hand stroke, try stretching out ur hands n looking diagonally or straight ahead n not down into the depth of the pool... u must b sinking coz u r looking at d floor of the pool or behind n ur head dives down...

  • brill cheers!! i fly is my favourite and best stroke used to race it however i had no idea how to teach someone it!! lol
