I was at the game, and the ND versus UCLA one 4 years before that started the streak. A great example of it is never over til its over. A great day for the Irish - just 3 weeks after beating Bama for the National Championship in football!
I still remember the person in front of me left at the time out with 3:40 to go, I said it's not over, they said not a chance and left. I was right.
KInda surprised that there are no comments on this video given what happened tonight in Hartford...
I remember this game. What was most amazing was that UCLA seemed to have it salted away with a little more than 3 minutes left and an 11 point lead (70-59). UCLA, of course, never scored again...
And does anyone know the longest streak men's since then? It can't be more than about 45 games, because only one team (Indiana in 1976) has gone undefeated since then. It was an amazing feat...
Well, I was (and still am) a Notre dame fan. I remember this game as if it was only played yesterday. I was 16 yrs old then. I hated UCLA with a passion. Looking back, I have to admit, we got the breaks several times. But the real point is that down the stretch, the big bad Bruins couldn't buy a basket-they choked! Ha ha Of course they did come back the next week and beat us quite handily. No matter-the 88 game winning streak was over and done with!
Love the reaction of the ND cheerleaders when Curtis is called for the travel at 3:22 .
Curtis must have lost sense of how much time was left when he launched a bad shot at 7:19 . Like a few others that have posted here, I remember watching this game live and it was absolutely riveting. I wasn't necessarily a ND fan, but I really wanted the UCLA streak to come to an end.
You have to respect Wooden for not doing the 4 cornersand guaranteeing a win. At least 3 ucla shots rimmed out late, Not their destiny to win I guess.
Adrian Dantley was underrated and underappreciated throughout his college and NBA career, except for ND fans. Dantley was one of the best pure shooters and scorers of all time.
@tommerrigan1956 He was also one of the smartest players to play. He was maybe 6'4" yet he was one of the top rebounders in the NBA. He played close to the basket even at that height and was amazing in beating much bigger players to score inside. He was just so smart in positioning and footwork.
I watched this game live. It was great then and it's still amazing watching it today. Definately one of the greatest college basketball games of all time.
I was at the game and the refs had little to do with the result. When ND began its 12 point run, Wooden failed to call a much needed time out. UCLA still had numerous times to win the game as Wilkes and Walton had wide open looks in the last few seconds of the game. Both teams had control of the result of that game and ND came out a 1 point winner. UCLA had let downs at the end of both half. ND made some remarkable shots. The refs had nothing to do with those shots.
@guitarmiister For anyone to say that UCLA got jobbed by refs is a joke. ND had remarkable players on that 74 team and they played with more intensity down the stretch. It's didn't hurt to have crazy fans in the stands as well...
These refs were as pathetic as the the one's that officiated the 1972 USSR Olympic basketball upset over the U.S. These Notre Dame homer refs should have been hogtied and someone should have gauged their eyes out! What a travesty! I watched this game live and it was the most disgusting homer ref performance I've ever seen! Those refs were the reason this game had a grotesque and sickening stench that day!
@DMWestWoodElite The refs were even worse in the first half! That's what kept the game closer than it should've been at halftime. UCLA was destroying N.D. 35-18, when these fraudulent N.D. homer refs "came out of their skulls" and helped N.D. cut the lead to 43-34 at halftime. Do your homework before you make retarded comments son!
@15crabtree Er, The Refs didn't cost The US that gold medal. A FIBA Executive (forget his name or title) did. Know your fucking facts before you comment like that.
@TheAntihero6212 Yeah, this guy who was the head of FIBA...I think his name was Bill Jones...did what he wasn't supposed to do, and that's tell the officials to put time back on the clock.
gosh security for rushing the court has gotten so much more intense back in the day when they rushed the court people must have gotten trampled they were going so crazy i kinda felt bad for the ucla players who got lost in the crowd of ND fans
I respect the fact that people may view the game differently. But to me, 70s rules were preferable as play development, strategy, and defensive skills were paramount. And the game was over in less than 2 hours.
Today, the game has largely evolved into an offensive free for all which lasts well beyond 2 hours. It remains fun. but not as much for me.
Because of all the damn time outs, games go on for so damn long. Look at this game, it was played on the court and not on the sidelines where they have to discuss every damn move. What the hell do you practice for if its not to get the basics down....
How I wish college basketball would get rid of the shot clock and three point line. The game was so much more enjoyable without those things back in the day.
If this game had been played under 1970s rules nowadays, UCLA would've protected their late 11 point lead by using the boring 4 corners stand/around offense. The shot clock is necessary, unfortunately.
agreed about the three point line and also I think they should bring back the jump ball; disagree about the shot clock. I remember back in the late 70's and early ti mid 80's when teams would play stallball the last ten minutes of the game./ it was horrible the shot clock was one of the best rule changes ever

The Irish are actually at both ends of the streak. Austin Carr put up 46 points on the Bruins 88 games earlier in UCLA's last loss before the streak.

Do you have the UCLA - Notre Dame game from exactly one week later? When UCLA blasted the Irish out of Pauley Pavilion?
