  • This version probably feels more detached because it was in 1977 and music sounded different then. In reality this version is probably more accurate with the original vision of Tm and Andrew. But Madonna's version is more up to date and more accesible to younger audiences. It could have been anyone singing the film version and it would have been more appealing today.

  • She is a good singer, yeah but Madonna´s version is more coherent with the spirit of the musical. This one feels cold, detached...not as effective.

  • @rljohio Even though the song isn't sung by Evita in the musical? Still, give Madge the good songs to sing even if it fucks with the plot.

  • this is much better than madonnas version.

  • Fine bass playing on this track, beatifully sung by Barbara.

  • Yes Ms Dickson was the first to sing it and will be the last to sing it also. It was one of the hits that got her famous. She is brilliant.

  • Does anyone know where I can find this Barbara Dickson version? I have the version from 'The Collection' but I much prefer the instrumentation (Rhodes?) on this.

  • can anyone tel what key this is in?

  • @danamdkny B Major. Madonna's was A-flat Major.

  • Yeah, duh. Barbara is more powerful in her vocals and I'm sure is a better singer than Madonna. BUT, Madonna's version had more feeling to it. More passion.

  • @kaylakaaapowww Yeah, Madonna always brings such heartfelt emotion to her singing, lol

  • @fateocharlie ZING!

  • @kaylakaaapowww Don't forget, the producer has a lot of input to the final product. The style and delivery are a product of the times and the prevailing musical taste. Its not a like for like comparison to compare styles which are 20 years apart.

  • This is way short of Barbara's original version. The original introduction was dropped after the 1970's because it was so similar to the introduction for the song "My Green Tambourine". It was also dropped for the Madonna version. Unfortunately this upsets the balance and spoils the song but Lloyd Webber had little choice. Sometimes it's hard for composers to know what is original and what is not.

  • She has a beautiful voice. But I don't like the supporting instruments. The guitar is too 1970s Cagney and Lacey support... Terrible.

  • Some people hate the sax, it's a bit more mellow than a synth or guitar solo

  • The vocal is great, but I really don't like the sax..... And just an aside, but how big was that hair!

    B-52....

  • Wish I was still 11 when 1st discovred Babara this song is pure class, not one out there these to match this quiality... Time and time again!

  • Madonna? How laughable, Madonna is a very moderate vocalist

"and thats me being kind" a dried up old dog thats been miming the last two decades? And that includes the majority of her concerts. 10/10 to Madonnas management team though.

  • although hitting the notes in a more powerful way, Madonna's version carries the sense of desperation, of sadness, yet strength to carry on. So much better Madonna.

  • takes me straight back to 1977,the hairs are up on the back of my neck, the best version ever, fantastic voice.

  • Barbara's version on the original concept album is perfect. How can anyone say that Madonna's version is better than Barbara's. This version is a little over produced, but her voice is still so much better. I agree with rightmoment, if you think Madonna has a better voice that Barbara, you must be on crack or maybe just tone deaf. Listen to the original!

  • wont let me post the link just look it up on wikipedia

  • Madonnas version is ok i quite like it but for all the people compairing / slagging off if anybody bothered to check ( apart from barbara's fans) she recorded the original track on the evita album BEFORE they decided to stage it as a musical it was originaly a rock opera concept album in 1976 with juile covington in the title role so Barbara is the original mistress for more info follow the link

  • It's great to hear this original version. But I have to say that this version seems a bit affected and mannered. Interesting how the other singers have performed it.

  • it is really boring....madonna's emotion n voice show much more emotions.this is just a usual prolong voice singing....no emotions.just showing off strong vocals.i mean..........she dosent sound like she is sad!

  • @richardmcnick I agree. Madonna's version is much better. More passion, feeling and energy. Madonna may not be a great actress but when she acts through singing she is undeniably great hence the gem, Evita. Barbara Dicks version almost put me to sleep. Seems like she will never leave that house. lol! Madonna's vocal are better. No contest.

  • @stewbaby40

Madonna is a better singer than Barbara Dickson!!!!!! Are you on crack?

  • This is the BEST version of this song, period!!

  • Check out my channel for those who love this song :) x

  • she has exactly the right qualities in her voice for this song, i cant describe what but its i think maybe the lack of vibrato which gives it a slightly less polished, more raw, real and insecure feel

  • Barbara provides for me the best voice for this song without a shadow of a doubt. No comparisons, just a personal preferance,

  • I never said that barbs was rubbish or that madonna was as good x

    I just prefered madonna x

  • one of my favorites...brilliant...

  • @doublekey321

Perfect!? You have to be joking. In terms of vocal talent and ability - Madonna is not in the same league as Barbara Dickson - who is a truly GREAT singer.

  • Actually, dear opponent, i wasnt speaking about any leagues or talents or anyhting of that kind. To my mind, Madonna performed the song brilliantly, it got me more than anyone's else. Saying that i dont mean that other performers were poor or worse, i just mean that Madonna's version iw worth of appraisal.

  • goodonya nayz u shuold be proud of ur dad for eva

  • Madonna who?

  • @emlodik MADONNNA as in Madge -- The one that married 2 guy ritchie

  • @xLola1992x You're an IDIOT.

  • Barbara is one of the best singers to come out of the UK - great voice, dazzling and pure. A real singer.

    Someone mentioned Madonna?

    Very clever businesswoman.

  • The sax player on this track is the best there is.. I should know cos he's my Dad!!

  • She is the singer who sang this part originally and she is by far the most superior - I have always loved it. Fantasti voice. Thanks for uploading it.

  • a great scottish songbird, respect to the babs lol

  • AI totally agree about the Madonna thing - this lady sings it best. Elaine Paige et al always get the credit for "I don't know how to love him'" from Jesus Chris Superstar but if you have heard Jackie Trent sing it, you know that no-one else should ever attempt it, she's totally awesome.

  • Brilliant melody + brilliant lyrics + brilliant singer = I'm overwhelmed every time I hear this!

  • There is no one who can sing this song as good as Barbara Dickson, not even Madonna. Barbara is a legend.

  • madonna did this song very very well........ i prefer madonna's version

    this is so boring

  • @TheNiksom

Its only boring to people with no taste or judgement. To people who can't tell the difference between exceptional artistry (Dickson) and feeble karoke (Madonna). Enjoy yourself!

  • @rightmoment Me too!But to say Madonna's fans are tasteless is awful-infact they are truly intoxicated!

  • @TheNiksom i agree

  • @MrsDistoney This is nice, but Sarah Brightman does it much better.

  • @fairchasehunter

    ....er...no. She doesn't, actually!

  • @rightmoment ....er...yes. She actually does!

  • @MrsDistoney Couldn't have put it better myself.

  • bullshit shes better than madonna

  • Do you have any hearing???

  • Love Evita. Love this woman's voice xD

  • b - side on the single...much better than the A side...such a pure voice...I'll take the suitcase....and the sax player

  • Amazing timbre to Barbara's voice. I hesitate to use the word 'artless' — it's so often misunderstood as 'containing no artistry', rather than understood in its true meaning: natural, and without pretension. Every syllable delivered so beautifully. Thank you for posting fateocharlie.

  • Barbara doesnt get the praise she deserves.Get her doing duet with Susan Boyle.2 great Scots together.Amazing

  • prefiero la version de M-DOLLA

  • forestgumpaed....having made regular appearances on the two ronnies does not take away the fact that this woman can sing.oh that scottish voice does something to me.shiver me timbers....

  • Seeing Evita next Friday. Can't wait to hear this.

  • I am going to have this played at my funeral.I hope i am going to heaven...lol.

  • The original and best version of this song!!

    Barbara completely owns this!!

    x

  • What do you mean "despite being Scottish"?

  • I was joking around Gazpol1 :)

  • Where have you been living?? Since Band of Gold, Dickson has won Olivier awards, had hit albums, toured constantly, been on television and radio, just released a DVD and has a new album and autobiography in the pipeline. The Fife Goddess has never sounded better.

  • You've obviously followed her career in some detail.

  • I'd never connected her with Evita until today. One of the occasional foibles with musicals and record output is a singer of one song isn't always the person made famous by the musical. I'd generally associate the 70's Evita with Julie Covington.

If there's a better version I've yet to hear it. BD's voice has an almost plaintive world weary tone to it. You'd never guess she was Scottish. ;-)

  • yeah Barbara did the origina soundtrack as the mistress with julie Covington as Eva and David Essex.

    She's briliant

  • Typical comment from a true ignorant racist

  • World class

  • Great Song.

But Poor Sound Quality on this vid.

  • Kenrew

No-One but No-One can sing this like Barbara.

    Eat yor heart out Madonna!

And how about the great Pete Zorn on Sax!

He is still backing Barbara and has been part

of a great Backing band on Barbara's tour this year.

  • Quite!

  • Evita

    Very Good

    Thanks

    JIM

  • Brilliant singer and artist.

  • Wow! Just sensational!

  • omg i had 2 sing this song in choir!

i like no all the words! lol

  • I like the sad feeling in her voice wjch is dif from other version.

  • This is THE ballad. Enjoy...

  • A Classic!

  • Beautiful voice.
