This version probably feels more detached because it was in 1977 and music sounded different then. In reality this version is probably more accurate with the original vision of Tm and Andrew. But Madonna's version is more up to date and more accesible to younger audiences. It could have been anyone singing the film version and it would have been more appealing today.
Does anyone know where I can find this Barbara Dickson version? I have the version from 'The Collection' but I much prefer the instrumentation (Rhodes?) on this.
Yeah, duh. Barbara is more powerful in her vocals and I'm sure is a better singer than Madonna. BUT, Madonna's version had more feeling to it. More passion.
@kaylakaaapowww Don't forget, the producer has a lot of input to the final product. The style and delivery are a product of the times and the prevailing musical taste. Its not a like for like comparison to compare styles which are 20 years apart.
This is way short of Barbara's original version. The original introduction was dropped after the 1970's because it was so similar to the introduction for the song "My Green Tambourine". It was also dropped for the Madonna version. Unfortunately this upsets the balance and spoils the song but Lloyd Webber had little choice. Sometimes it's hard for composers to know what is original and what is not.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Madonna? How laughable, Madonna is a very moderate vocalist
"and thats me being kind" a dried up old dog thats been miming the last two decades? And that includes the majority of her concerts. 10/10 to Madonnas management team though.
although hitting the notes in a more powerful way, Madonna's version carries the sense of desperation, of sadness, yet strength to carry on. So much better Madonna.
Barbara's version on the original concept album is perfect. How can anyone say that Madonna's version is better than Barbara's. This version is a little over produced, but her voice is still so much better. I agree with rightmoment, if you think Madonna has a better voice that Barbara, you must be on crack or maybe just tone deaf. Listen to the original!
Madonnas version is ok i quite like it but for all the people compairing / slagging off if anybody bothered to check ( apart from barbara's fans) she recorded the original track on the evita album BEFORE they decided to stage it as a musical it was originaly a rock opera concept album in 1976 with juile covington in the title role so Barbara is the original mistress for more info follow the link
It's great to hear this original version. But I have to say that this version seems a bit affected and mannered. Interesting how the other singers have performed it.
it is really boring....madonna's emotion n voice show much more emotions.this is just a usual prolong voice singing....no emotions.just showing off strong vocals.i mean......she dosent sound like she is sad!

@richardmcnick I agree. Madonna's version is much better. More passion, feeling and energy. Madonna may not be a great actress but when she acts through singing she is undeniably great hence the gem, Evita. Barbara Dicks version almost put me to sleep. Seems like she will never leave that house. lol! Madonna's vocal are better. No contest.
she has exactly the right qualities in her voice for this song, i cant describe what but its i think maybe the lack of vibrato which gives it a slightly less polished, more raw, real and insecure feel

i for one think that Madonna's version is perfect. Saying that, i m not trying to hurt or put any other artist down. Sha s made a great job, performing in the movie. Applause!
Perfect!? You have to be joking. In terms of vocal talent and ability - Madonna is not in the same league as Barbara Dickson - who is a truly GREAT singer.
Actually, dear opponent, i wasnt speaking about any leagues or talents or anyhting of that kind. To my mind, Madonna performed the song brilliantly, it got me more than anyone's else. Saying that i dont mean that other performers were poor or worse, i just mean that Madonna's version iw worth of appraisal.
She is the singer who sang this part originally and she is by far the most superior - I have always loved it. Fantasti voice. Thanks for uploading it.
AI totally agree about the Madonna thing - this lady sings it best. Elaine Paige et al always get the credit for "I don't know how to love him'" from Jesus Chris Superstar but if you have heard Jackie Trent sing it, you know that no-one else should ever attempt it, she's totally awesome.
Its only boring to people with no taste or judgement. To people who can't tell the difference between exceptional artistry (Dickson) and feeble karoke (Madonna). Enjoy yourself!
Amazing timbre to Barbara's voice. I hesitate to use the word 'artless' — it's so often misunderstood as 'containing no artistry', rather than understood in its true meaning: natural, and without pretension. Every syllable delivered so beautifully. Thank you for posting fateocharlie.
forestgumpaed....having made regular appearances on the two ronnies does not take away the fact that this woman can sing.oh that scottish voice does something to me.shiver me timbers....
Where have you been living?? Since Band of Gold, Dickson has won Olivier awards, had hit albums, toured constantly, been on television and radio, just released a DVD and has a new album and autobiography in the pipeline. The Fife Goddess has never sounded better.
I'd never connected her with Evita until today. One of the occasional foibles with musicals and record output is a singer of one song isn't always the person made famous by the musical. I'd generally associate the 70's Evita with Julie Covington.
If there's a better version I've yet to hear it. BD's voice has an almost plaintive world weary tone to it. You'd never guess she was Scottish. ;-)

She is a good singer, yeah but Madonna´s version is more coherent with the spirit of the musical. This one feels cold, detached...not as effective.

@rljohio Even though the song isn't sung by Evita in the musical? Still, give Madge the good songs to sing even if it fucks with the plot.

She has a beautiful voice. But I don't like the supporting instruments. The guitar is too 1970s Cagney and Lacey support... Terrible.

Some people hate the sax, it's a bit more mellow than a synth or guitar solo
