oh my...then just go slower. Don't ask him to lay down, just get him to the point where he is comfortable with you asking for him to give to pressure a little. Once he is comfortable with that, you can proceed.
I have a question... All you did was have to rope on his foot and stand there and he knows to go down??? I have to hold my mares head aorund and her foot.
how do you go from getting a horse to lay down when you are on the ground to guide him, to getting him to lay down when you are on him? that is where i am at right now
I have started a cue with a dressage whip to get him to lay down by tapping on his shoulder. I haven't gotten there yet, but am hoping when I am in the saddle, he will follow the cue just the same. It worked for the Spanish Walk. :)
Don't you just love paints... my boy has learned all his tricks within a day of teaching. I dont use a halter, ropes or a whip generally. Somtimes a crop is handy as he is very full of himself and needs to be reminded to stay out of my space. silly boy. I train horses....this method is not bad really..he is just learning to yield to pressure wihich when a horse sets back or gets tangled in ropes can be a really handy thing! Also u can stay a safe distance from the horse...
There are ways to do it without ropes. Parelli level 4 teaches you how to, I havent learnt it though, most of the time when you rope your forcing themnto do it, parelli teaches them to want to do it, although to training them to do it takes a long time... Its a really hard thing to do. Maybe if you took mirroring to the extremes lol
I love Parelli and think he has a great way of explaining and doesn't just aim towards the horse people that have been in it for years but rather the new guy who has a passion but never had the oppurtunity...
yes, you need to teach your horse to give to pressure. So pick up the foot and the moment they relax and come back to you with their foot, reward them and put the foot down. The further you go back with the foot, the more they come down until the knee is on the ground. Don't go too far too soon, or they can loose their balance and accidentally topple on you.
We started with the rope, so I could be safe. He's 17 hands, and I didn't want him to fall on me ;) He now has his balance and lays down when I just tap him on the shoulder. I only had to use the rope for the first time.
ong. q and u are amazing. if u wouldnt mind me asking how did u teach him how to lay down. my horse sonny knows how to trot behind me without a lead, stop, back, and bow. He also knows how to spin.
I used to ride with miss mary out there! I loved laying down izzy to get on her!

how do you get them to lay down my mare can bow
15moonlight 1 year ago
I don't like this method. The horse is perfectly capable to lay down on it's own, you just have to find the button.
BUT you are gentle, and it's nice to see :) Good work anyways

how can Picking up a Horses Foot' Make them lay Down?
KingOGITH 2 years ago
when I pick his foot up to lay down, I'm facing forward. When I pick his foot up to clean, I'm facing backward. He knows the difference.
