I think you've already heard this, but your piano playing is good and your voice is smooth, but the low key of singing would match a lot better with tempo much, much slower. Read the lyrics, it's a SAD song. Brandy meets a man that she connects with and then he tells her he won't stay. And then you end with a keyboard roll!! I think you should do this one again, slower, and repost it here. It has a lot of potential.
GOOD JOB! GOOD SONG, tell all the ROCKSTARS that criticize you it was a performance. DO IT BETTER IN RESPONSE AS A PERFORMANCE! Quit downing and just show how it should be done! YOU want to criticize? Do it better or shut up!
one plays music & sings it is to be-you-too-full of sound. those who can't dance, & can not play instruments nor sing, they play hateful critics naturally being Simon wannabees, so please do not take in the idiocy, believing what fiat Simon Says. but life's a game which they're losers in & can only spew nonsense to make cents or no sense, if they be by an ocean, they curse it unless they could steal its power for themselves to do sell-fish things. thanks for sharing/playing from the heart 8)
Well, done kid....hey arm-chair-critics: try playing it...or even find accurate sheet music...what? you can't?....thats because it's difficult to transcribe....at least he took a shot at it.
@jamiesea I am a muscian and I think he meant to do it at that speed. This is common in music. It gives it a certain fell especially when there is only voice and piano. But I see where you would think that as well.
admirable, but in all honesty, there is no way to make this song listenable. does not matter who or how you play it, it is just a bad bad song. very very bad.
i admire you. You are obviously performing in front of an audience that is concentrating on you, not some piano bar where you barely get noticed. You are singing and accompanying yourself, and some people have criticized how you do it. My advice to the critics: try it yourself first. It is damned hard to do, MUCH harder than just singing or just playing piano.
Very nice. The beat is danceable too. Nice job covering it. The chorus was a little mixed up in the beginning, but aside from that, very nice. First time through the Chorus concludes with "Brandy your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea." But hell, everyone has their own interpretations on it. Nice job. overall.
I've fallen in love with this song again and it's great to hear you do it on the piano. If you take the advice and re-do it slower, please post again, I'd love to hear it.
you gave a honest reply. it is hard to play and sing on piano what an entire band does. bass, voice, chords. well done, and it takes courage to play and sing ALONE on stage. you showed nerve! well done!
good job man ,just a little slower would have made it more a ballad since there is no accompanyment to follow too , as a solo your power would have shined in your great piano playing and your your great vocals , together it would have taken on a less rushed rocked out version, Im not trying to put you down by any means or critisize your ability because you have the talent and the voice ....sometimes rearangement is necessary to get the the dynamic impact that makes the song , I am a producer
The piano sounds great, but you need a different guy to sing vocals. The original singer had an incredible voice. Chili Peppers have the best cover of this song.
mattheweilar You're making excuses. You have turned the song into a lame "piano bar" interpretation. You have not really figured out the original song arrangement enough to make a reasonable interpretation. If you had, you would be able to capture a certain amount of the true beauty this song has. You could play the bass substance using the left hand, the melodic instrumental substance using the right hand, and sing the song as it was made. Sing the correct melody pitch. That will surely help.
What you do shows talent, and I was a mean ass, so I will help you grasp. The song, like every song that is catchy and has a grove, has an interplay between the beat the the upbeat. Syncopation. The bass is on the 1 and the 3. The guitar, and vocals, syncopate, meaning they leave the 3 beat. The vocals syncopate more than the guitar does, meaning it probably leaves more than just the 3 beat. Without counting this song out, I imagine he is barely on the beat at all. Just enough to give structure.
His singing way too fast. If it was a little slower and calmer it would be something like the original version. To the original song, I can go to sleep relaxed.
I'm in agreement with some ot the other posters. Slow down as if you were actually singing the song to Brandy herself with nobody else in the room and you are singing straight into her eyes using the subtle dyamics of the song and hanging on key notes to seduce her. Also, I think you needed to amp your singing to let the vocals lead.
Grat JOb. I tried to learn this song. It has a bunch of quick chord changes
Good impersonation. However, where is the individuality e.g., special quality that distinguishes an individual. A beautiful cover was done by the Fine Young Cannibals, when they did Suspicious Minds. The song would have been a lot better if there was a uniqueness to it, if not, you are just an impersonator.
wow i really like it. His lower register is pretty quiet, but its an excellent rendition!! I'd ask for the music, but i probably couldnt pull it off =D
I know what everyone's hearing that's off: He's singing and playing in an exaggerated legato. The original is way more dynamic and rhythmic. He's good though. Not to mention he's on top of the beat - this is a type of song where the performer should be relaxing the beat. I was Counting Crows' bassist so I know this stuff.
i think that hes just playing it too fast which throws it off a bit. part of what made this song and gave it that feeling was the tempo. but this is still cool
I don't understand these people who say it's too fast. Isn't a "cover" about doing your own personal interpretation and not sounding exactly like the original? I think this is awesome. Gosh, give some credit where it's due.
Yes...this music it's all about taking a time to contemplate,to wonder,to dream...it'll never work at this speed...i'm sorry but it's way out of the original beauty of the song. But who plays it fast can plays it slower
I'm not going to lie, it sounds horrible. It's way too fast and your voice is off key. It looked like you were'nt too enthusiastic about doing this song because you rushed off stage. Take some professional music lessons and take a shot of brandy too.

As Matt, himself, notes, a little fast. And mic, a little far away. But that would be from covering both piano, and vocal.
BUT shows strong potential. Held the tune, hit the notes, and did not miss the lyrics.
Since this was an encore song, the remainder of the performace may have been better.
