Being the drummer here..lol i paid attention to both the players here, and i feel both could swing very well! but the 2nd drummer really had a more Old school swing, which fit beautifully with this song! :)
Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Jelly-Roll Morton, Fats Waller, Coleman Hawkins, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and his guys, they invented Jazz, no student can believe he can invent Jazz again by himself!
I play tenor sax, and i did'nt like this tenor sax-players solo. It sounded wrong it was like he was out of tune... The soprano was lovely... i really like that :)
As much as I hate to beat on a song (for risk of sounding like a flaming troll), I'm sorry, but after comparing this to the Ellington original, I just don't like this rendition. As the title states, it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing, and unfortunately, I'm just not finding that swing in this rendition. These people are (mostly) all talented musicians, but I'm just not finding that smooth energetic feeling (in other words, swing) that I get from the original piece. 2/5 stars
i just don't understand why they played it the way they did. if the piano player wants to fuck around with sus chords and fourth voicings and try to play like brad mehldau, why don't they pull out some mccoy tunes? or some wayne tunes? but not this song. notice how terence stays true to the style and wayne mainly just plays bop, whereas all these other amateur kids are trying to play contemporary jazz. its like a smack in the face to duke and all of them
no, THIS jazz sucks. What you said is like listening to Limp Bizkit and saying "Man, Rap sucks." Do yourself a favor and check out some of the Jazz Icons series featuring T-Monk, Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins.
even if you can hit those notes, I bet your tone sounds like crap. I'd like to see you post a video of yourself playing the saxophone and actually have a decent tone after only few months of playing?
stop lying to yourself, thinking you know everything after only a few months of playing - you're only hurting yourself
No, I'm sorry, little boy, but requiem is right. If you really think the tenor saxophonist sucks, then post a video of yourself playing better than him. I wouldn't be too surprised if you failed miserably at tenor saxophone; you talk like you can do better than him, but you sound like you're an amateur. Arrogant little bastard. ~
I´m very fascinated by people having opinion about stuff they don´t know anything about. That becomes totally obvious when reading the last two and more comments. And also if you don´t know the "soprano saxophonist" you should check him out first..
I am in a middle school jazz band at my school for years 8-10 and i play tenor saxophone (the sax in the video) and i have been playing for a month and i swear to god i could play better than that idiot playing it there. we play this song in my jazz band and we are so much better, and we have about 15 instruments and its hard but we still get.
the second trumpeter was good too and the soprano saxophonist as well. it was the tenor sax and the first trumpet soloist that let down the whole band.
honestly you wish you could play better than the saxophonist ill admit he wasnt the best but if you actually listen to jazz music with soloists you hear they go all over the musical spectrum id like to watch you go down from the low B flat to the High F sharp like some professionals do honestly no one cares about your skills and just keep it to yourself and i would really like to watch you play a trumpet and a jazz band isnt even supposed to be large idiot
Well I'm confused. That rhythm section's all over the place, and it doesn't sound like they meant to do that. How about this drummer? Is it the cool thing now to pretend you're driving a band? I hope Wayne and Herbie are actually going to teach these kids, and not just show up every few months on some down time from a tour. Seriously, this is pretty average stuff at most larger jazz competitions.
wow, you're kidding right? that was middle school level amateur improvisation. i understand she is probably trained classically, but she doesn't manage her crescendos or interval transitions well at all. i was embarrassed, honestly.
The Monk Institute's graduate program used to be housed at USC. These videos are from their announcement that the program will be housed at Loyola University New Orleans starting in the fall 2007
Word, the tenor player has some stuff that sounds like lovano, but still has a great original concept. I agree with i lovevarese, because times change...
yeah, yall can hate on the tenor player all you want really, but I think he's pretty killin, I hate when people say that someone needs to stay within a certain style...it's 2007 standards are supposed to be different.
Just happened across the video and heard/saw someone that I recognized. The Bass player, Joe Johnson, is just a talented guy. I've been lucky to do jam sessions with him here in Dallas and I'm just amazed at his ability. All of the musicians were great but I also have to agree, the Tenor player needed to stay within the form. It just sounded like he was trying to impress Wayne with his "going outside."
i'm gonna have to agree with ilovevarese this kid is in the monk institute stay inside the changes my ass he was in the changes and plus he doesn't have to impress wayne the because he is in the monk institute
