  • Ehhhh ok....

  • Alright.

  • Thanks, it's great !

  • muito muito bom mesmo !!!!

  • notice how the band got better when they switched drummers....

but got all ruined when she started singing again....

  • im singing tht in my chorus concert

  • anyone know the very old version from like the 30's or 40's with a girl singing this?

  • did she have to dress like that?

  • we have to sing this song in chorus

  • guitarist sounds as if he is a Herb Ellis fan

  • i appreciate the style but it lacks the spice that Ella had

  • very good!!

  • That bassist is the ducks nuts. You guys were cookin', forget about the armchair critics.

  • Quite right, ol' boy.

    'Dem beats were riveting.

  • Being the drummer here..lol i paid attention to both the players here, and i feel both could swing very well! but the 2nd drummer really had a more Old school swing, which fit beautifully with this song! :)

  • That guitarist has nice tone!

  • The singer is sick

  • It's amazing and sad to realize:

    IT DON'T MEAN A' THING !!

sorry, but it ABSOLUTELY DON'T SWINGS !!

Do these guys really want to play Jazz?

did they LISTEN to the real Masters ?

Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Jelly-Roll Morton, Fats Waller, Coleman Hawkins, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and his guys, they invented Jazz, no student can believe he can invent Jazz again by himself!

  • nice arrangement, however quite a stray from sir duke.

  • I play tenor sax, and i did'nt like this tenor sax-players solo. It sounded wrong it was like he was out of tune... The soprano was lovely... i really like that :)

  • Out of tune??....Out-of-chord notes doesn't mean "out of tune"

  • kinda sucks that the first pianist got only a few bars.

  • As much as I hate to beat on a song (for risk of sounding like a flaming troll), I'm sorry, but after comparing this to the Ellington original, I just don't like this rendition. As the title states, it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing, and unfortunately, I'm just not finding that swing in this rendition. These people are (mostly) all talented musicians, but I'm just not finding that smooth energetic feeling (in other words, swing) that I get from the original piece. 2/5 stars

  • the guitarist is very good

  • Sounds very authentic to me. Thanks for posting that timeless classic.

    Brewster

  • man, that tenor player. god, i cant stand his tone

  • i thought his tone was sweet! maybe not his time tho

  • yea, his time sucks like hell.

Like when he's playing that little section behind the singer with the rest of the horns on the melody. He's real out fo place there

  • yeah... he has a great tone!

  • i just don't understand why they played it the way they did. if the piano player wants to fuck around with sus chords and fourth voicings and try to play like brad mehldau, why don't they pull out some mccoy tunes? or some wayne tunes? but not this song. notice how terence stays true to the style and wayne mainly just plays bop, whereas all these other amateur kids are trying to play contemporary jazz. its like a smack in the face to duke and all of them

  • Yea kids. It really don't mean a thing!!

  • but keep on guys. I wish I could play like that. Now you just need the time to explore the real thing!

  • Small guy , big attitude. Thanks mr upcomingtrumpetmister man =)

  • wayne looks somewhat like freddie

  • not even a little bit

  • some kind of annual university performance? Nice!

  • poop. Jazz academia bs.

  • i'm sorry but i personally think they raped the original version through this... the voice just isn't fitting...

  • bassist and drummer are awesome.

  • no, THIS jazz sucks. What you said is like listening to Limp Bizkit and saying "Man, Rap sucks." Do yourself a favor and check out some of the Jazz Icons series featuring T-Monk, Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins.

  • this is the first time i've seen wayne "play" over changes in a long while.

  • wow...

dat lady has a beautiful voice...

    very wonderful....

    ~cLarOphonist~

  • Awesome tenor player!

  • female voiced killed it, and not in a good way

  • now THAT swings!

  • jazz its not a big improvisation it is relly f...g great improvisation in unharmonycal harmony

  • GREAT

  • shut up kid. what size reed do you play? a 2?

even if you can hit those notes, I bet your tone sounds like crap. I'd like to see you post a video of yourself playing the saxophone and actually have a decent tone after only few months of playing?

stop lying to yourself, thinking you know everything after only a few months of playing - you're only hurting yourself

  • pffffft,

    Because YOU know everything,

    riiiight?

  • No, I'm sorry, little boy, but requiem is right. If you really think the tenor saxophonist sucks, then post a video of yourself playing better than him. I wouldn't be too surprised if you failed miserably at tenor saxophone; you talk like you can do better than him, but you sound like you're an amateur. Arrogant little bastard. ~

  • I think their just saying.... that the rendition of this song does Not help the Tenor...

I felt as if it sounded like a Tenor playing random notes over a cassette. He sounded good, and he was...its just the song didnt help...

  • WTF IS YOUR PROBLEM?

I dont see you posting a video?

I am asking you to post a video...or SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Let peoples have their own oppinions...they can be heard without you shoving insults down their throats.

  • @cltRequiem that had to hurt. (I knew this is a year ago but I couldn't resist).

  • I´m very fascinated by people having opinion about stuff they don´t know anything about. That becomes totally obvious when reading the last two and more comments. And also if you don´t know the "soprano saxophonist" you should check him out first..

  • that soprano saxophonist is wayne shorter stupid!

  • honestly you wish you could play better than the saxophonist ill admit he wasnt the best but if you actually listen to jazz music with soloists you hear they go all over the musical spectrum id like to watch you go down from the low B flat to the High F sharp like some professionals do honestly no one cares about your skills and just keep it to yourself and i would really like to watch you play a trumpet and a jazz band isnt even supposed to be large idiot

  • (L)

  • Well I'm confused. That rhythm section's all over the place, and it doesn't sound like they meant to do that. How about this drummer? Is it the cool thing now to pretend you're driving a band? I hope Wayne and Herbie are actually going to teach these kids, and not just show up every few months on some down time from a tour. Seriously, this is pretty average stuff at most larger jazz competitions.

  • my dad is better than the sax at improv not even playin but this dude is good i just still have never met anyone better than my dad

  • If this the future of improvised music, kill me now.

  • so are these guys all 18?

  • the piano player is such a freak i hear. he took a short solo too

  • that azn trumpet guys gotta loosen up! haha

  • Tell me that 6:56 is not the best vocal improvisation ever. Sickness

  • wow, you're kidding right? that was middle school level amateur improvisation. i understand she is probably trained classically, but she doesn't manage her crescendos or interval transitions well at all. i was embarrassed, honestly.

  • WOW! They actually made the international anthem of jazz wishy-washy! I didn't think it was possible!

  • all of it was real smooth....good job

  • i like the scat singing

  • where play it in my 6th grade jazz band there awsome compair to us

  • i played an easier version of this in seventh grade... :)

  • oh man, i have the same drum set

  • the asian guy i mean

  • i personally liked his solo, it was interesting and he had a good sound

  • i agree i think he sounds prety good

  • you know it is a woman right?

  • I think he's pretty good! You don't like him because of his appearance I guess

  • dont like the trumpet as much...

  • Tenor Player is Killin!! nuf said

  • my brother's band and i did this song... for no reason at his open mick night,, it was FUN!!

  • Awesome, did broadcast production majors film this?

    Oh, wait. I forgot.

  • All you have to do is swing? I am positive that it's all you have to do is sing

  • actually, its both. they say swing AND sing.

trust me, i have to sing this song for chorus

  • good, but she DID get some of the words wrong. My choir class sang that.

  • yheeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!! that is swing!!!!

  • Is that Herbie on piano?

  • these guys come and teach us at north holywood high school very talented

  • Those are some talented kids right there.

  • these guys used to be in LA right??

  • The Monk Institute's graduate program used to be housed at USC. These videos are from their announcement that the program will be housed at Loyola University New Orleans starting in the fall 2007

  • Word, the tenor player has some stuff that sounds like lovano, but still has a great original concept. I agree with i lovevarese, because times change...

  • great rythm section, it swings like hell

  • Jake is the man!

    good luck,

    Floris.

  • ya man, the dude swings his asssss off

  • We Love you Jake !

  • yeah, yall can hate on the tenor player all you want really, but I think he's pretty killin, I hate when people say that someone needs to stay within a certain style...it's 2007 standards are supposed to be different.

  • HAAAAAANNNNNAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!!!

  • Just happened across the video and heard/saw someone that I recognized. The Bass player, Joe Johnson, is just a talented guy. I've been lucky to do jam sessions with him here in Dallas and I'm just amazed at his ability. All of the musicians were great but I also have to agree, the Tenor player needed to stay within the form. It just sounded like he was trying to impress Wayne with his "going outside."

  • i'm gonna have to agree with ilovevarese this kid is in the monk institute stay inside the changes my ass he was in the changes and plus he doesn't have to impress wayne the because he is in the monk institute

  • I disagree, the guy is staying pretty much in side the changes, he just gives it a bit of a rough twist thats all, i think he plays great.

  • this is a fantastic video. these kids are very talented. Tenor kid needs to stay inside a little more, and stick with the style but whatever.
