I am confused. He seems to play that instrument alot. Is it an 8 string guitar with paired strings like a 12 string, or is it a Bouzouki that is shaped like a guitar?
amazing musicion.look at all them chord changes and added melodys, and he is singing aswell great style.and hes a humane person with good political views.one of the best along with dick gaughan...thanks for posting...
I first heard this when I went to see him in the Edinburgh Folk Club with a friend last year and absolutely fell in love with his music- this was probably my favourite!
this brings me good memories of his concert in Panama :) i love his music and he is a very kind man. Thanks Andy for such good music, go raibh maith agat!
@Thomasfiddle That makes sense - I'd probably have figured it out myself if I'd thought about it for a few minutes. God it brings me back - a neighbour's 21st birthday party, my first sight of a bouzouki, a Pioneer sliding down the wall at 2am...wonderful. Must start playing again.
@thetwentinch Its actually a Bouzouki, he just came up with the idea of putting the strings on a guitar body (for comfort more than anything), however the finger board is also much longer than the standard acoustic guitar
@thetwentinch He's most likely strung his guitar like a bouzouki... he can get the tone and depth from the body of the 12-string and he can utilize the riffs and shapes from the other side of his musical arsenal. Sounds great either way.
Hi @thetwentinch ! This is a guitar-bouzouki (bascially the strings of a bouzouki on a guitar body). The bouzouki is a greek instrument. (I'm happy to be corrected if someone knows, but) I think Andy Irvine may have invented the guitar-bouzouki. The guitar body makes it louder than a bouzouki than would normally be possible on a traditional bouzouki body, and the bouzouki strings and tuning keep the lovely ringing sound of the greek bouzouki.
@thetwentinch It's basically a Bazouki with the dreadnought guitar body that he has specially made so that it can give it a more powerful accoustic sound than the original instrument. He actually references the bazouki in the song. His is a modification of it. Great sound hasn't it?
@thetwentinch It's called a Bouzouki, it originated from the Lute family, taken from Turkey to Greece, in the 60's found it's way into the Irish folk scene from the Greek bouzouki. It's a 8 string, with 4 sets of two.

@thetwentinch it's called an irish Bouzouki although the one he's playing is a custom made guitar bodied Bouzouki, they tune up the same as a mandolin either GDAE or GDAG
@thetwentinch Actually, its not a guitar- its an Irish bouzouki with a guitar body. The string courses are tuned in 5ths, as with a fiddle or mandolin. Looks like the scale on this one is about 23". Google Irish Bouzouki for more info. Graham McDonald of Oz makes very similar instruments in Canberra.
I said much the same thing earlier this evening.I directed a new fan to his website and I even used the word "Troubadour".
Brilliantly descriptive of Andy isn't it?.
I first liked Andy's music because I thought it very good, not knowing a thing about the man.His guitar playing and songs made me feel that I had found a genius that no one else knew about!.
It was a few years later that I realised he was actually rather brilliant, and much loved and respected by his peers,as he should be!.
on the bright side, many of the people who have uploaded these vids are young people, who simply like the music (rather than being nostalgic) so that should count for something:-)
Its a guitar shaped bouzouki or a gouzouki and its tuned GDAD'. Made by Stefan Sobell. Check the website out.
