@superanimeniac The point of the Dissidia games is fanservice. The nerdy kind, not SO much the sexy kind (unless you happen to be a straight girl or a gay guy). Characters were largely chosen based on who the majority of their (Japanese) fanbase liked, with an unexpected curve ball or two to keep it interesting (read: Laguna).

I agree with your point on Freya, though, had a third FFIX character gotten in, it would likely have been either Garnet, Vivi, or POSSIBLY Steiner.

As for me, I'm holding out for 3D FFV, personally. I liked Jason Spisak's portrayal of Bartz in Dissidia, and, after FFIX, FFV is my favourite FF. Or, y'know, maybe they'll show Europe a little more love with the KH Final Mixes some day.

While Sabin might not be Square's first choice(I'd personally love another fist fighter), Shadow and a few other characters could definitely fill some niches in the roster. Also, don't hate on Kain man, he's way more compelling than Freya. Kain has a backstory of betrayal, while Freya's story is centered around another character that wouldn't be in the game.

@superanimeniac The whole reason Freya left Burmecia was to search for Frately, and the destruction of her city was not her fault. Even if she had been there when the attack went down she was unable to beat Beatrix with Zidane Vivi and Quina at her side, so I doubt she would have made a difference alone.

I like Freya's character, but it wouldn't translate into Dissidia well without Frately, so Kain was a much easier choice, since Cecil and Golbez are already in the game.

Their inclusion didn't come down to their personalities or back story, they were chosen because they were the main characters. 012 was focused on the new cast, and they had to be compelling in terms of the Dissidia realm. Kain is known for changing sides, which is a fun story telling tool. Freya is searching for someone not in game, so her story is not as compelling.

@superanimeniac There's nothing within the code of the game that prevents new characters, the only thing that makes adding new characters hard, is balancing them with the already existing cast. There are rumors going around that some characters were completed but not put into the game, but those are just rumors. I will say if Square misses this opportunity, they'll be losing out on easy money, and many fans will be disappointed.
