OMG is that Addy as in Brian ? cant remember his last name ... I used to work with him in Narembeen Westropp shearing .... cant believe your still doing that Brian ,,, Its me Frank and I'm a nurse now ... last time I went and rousied frickin near killed me ,,,, can honestly say stuff that job ,,,, and your still listening to pissy sounds!
badabamlamm ...... the sheep are so calm beacuse there is various pressure points that u use and the way that you cradle them with your legs you also have to be fast enough to beat there thinking process so they dont have time to realise that they dont like that much
no, if it hurt them, they would throw a fit. you want the sheep comfortable and relaxed or they fight and you don't get much shearing done. The positions were figured for fast, efficient shearing with minimum stress to the sheep.
@sheepshearer100 why are they so calm? they look drugged, but I don't think they are. it is as if they are naturally super submissive animals, and they don't mind being man-handled. but that doesn't make any sense to me, since when do wild animals not mind being man-handled
@moneyman10k they are calm because they are not in discomfort. If they are full of feed and water, or your hurting them, then they are not so submissive. Bad weather will make them fight at times, also, once in a while you just get a fighter. Usually they are pretty calm if the shearer is doing his job right. They are not technically wild animals. They have been domesticated and sheared for thousands of years.
I never sheared merinos here in the states, but have sheared alot of rambouillet sheep. I think they are similar, more work on one of them than a cross for sure!
